<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PROCESS FOR ROUNDING THE ENDS OF THE BRUSHES OR HAIRS, AND
TOOLS FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROCESS.
It is known that the bristles of the brushes cut by shearing, in the operation of cutting in smooth or tapered shape, present in line with the cutting sections sharp edges, chips or burrs.
These defects are more particularly observed in the cutting of toothbrushes fitted with certain very tough synthetic fibers such as polyamide mono-bristles.
The attention of stomatologists and informed manufacturers has already been alerted to the serious drawbacks which these defects present for genetics, the importance of which on examination under a magnifying glass underlines.
To remedy this, it has already been proposed to sand the end of the bristles of the toothbrushes by means of an abrasive powder carried by a pad driven by a rapid rotational movement. This operation is delicate and expensive, because it requires not only to carry out the sanding operation with care to avoid damaging the bristles, but also to thoroughly and completely clean each brush after sanding the bristles, to remove all traces of abrasive. The pad used must be made up specifically so that its discs, penetrating between the horsehair which must be rounded, rub laterally against the ends of these horsehair; they therefore wear out quickly and can produce local heating, which is particularly harmful in the case of polyamide mono-bristles with a relatively low melting point.
In addition, it frequently happens that abrasive grains become encrusted in the end of the bristles of the brush, which is very harmful for the preservation of the enamel of the teeth.
It has also been proposed to melt the ends of the polyamide mono-bristles in order to form a small ball on each of them, but this is very easily detached, again leaving a jagged or angular section which has the same drawbacks. that the section pri-

The object of the present invention is to provide a method and a tool for mechanically rounding the end of the bristles or bristles of brushes of any type, a method which does not have the drawbacks mentioned above, and which makes it possible to shape the brushes. The end of each horsehair in such a way that these terminate in a blunt, substantially hemispherical or paraboloidal shape, starting from the cylindrical shape of the horsehair sectioned either normally or at an angle.
The method according to the invention consists in subjecting the end of each bristle of the brush to the action of a cutter with a concave profile rotating rapidly. Preferably, the milling will be carried out simultaneously on all the bristles, which can be obtained by joining and mounting on the same axis a large number of elementary cutters, the tool thus formed having an apparent contour reproducing that of the longitudinal profile of the section of the brush, considered in its overall silhouette.
Advantageously, during work each horsehair will be guided so that its axis is maintained in the median plane of the concave surface generated by the cutting edge having to shape its end, which edge reproduces the contour of the hemispherical shape to be given to the end of the horsehair.
In a first embodiment of the tool, this guidance is provided by the side walls of grooves with inclined sides, very close together, hollowed out at the periphery of the tool in planes perpendicular to the axis of the tool. rotation, and whose rounded ends give rise, by their intersections with deeper axial or helical grooves, to the cutting edges.
In a second embodiment, the tool consists of a stack of two series of discs, those of the first series or cutting discs having a thickness a little greater than the diameter of the horsehair and having grooves at their periphery having the same curvature. that the hemispherical part to be produced, and notches giving rise to the cutting edges; those of the second series thinner and projecting at the periphery of the first, constituting guides holding the hair in front of the cutting discs.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing, of course. , part of said invention.

Figo 13 is a side view of a milling disc.
Fig. 14 is a side view of a combing or guide disc.
Figo 15 is a partial axial section on a large scale of the tool shown in Figs 10 and 12.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 3, the rotary tool or milling cutter consists of a solid of revolution 1 made of hard steel, the apparent contour 2 of which reproduces the longitudinal profile 3 of the brush 4 to be terminated. fig. 1 the barrel-shaped tool is intended to complete a smooth-cut brush shown in regard to FIG. 2. This solid of revolution 1 is drilled, axially, with a hole 5 for the passage of a drive axis.
At the outer periphery, the surface of this tool is hollowed out of fine equidistant grooves 6 each wound in a circle perpendicular to the axis of the surface of revolution. These furrows, which are shown on a larger scale in Figure 4, have at their periphery a width a little greater than the diameter of the hair to be rounded (approximately once 1/2 to twice this diameter) and they are limited by two walls. 7 inclined one on the other, connected to the bottom of the grooves by a concave surface 8 like the profile to be given to the end of each horsehair. These furrows, the depth of which is about one to two times the diameter of the bristles, exist over a length L of the tool at least equal to the length 1 of the lining of the brush.
The cutting edges of the elementary cutters corresponding to each of the grooves 6 are obtained by cutting, in the revolution solid thus prepared, grooves 9 with radial faces which can be oriented parallel to the axis of rotation, or be slightly inclined on this one, and wound according to elongated pitch propellers. These grooves are deeper than the grooves 6, so that the tool has cutting edges, in the form of teeth, having the profile shown in Figures 4 and 5. However, the relief of the peripheral surfaces elementary burs is not necessary, given the flexibility of the material processed.
With the tool hardened, the sharp edges formed by the intersection of the grooves 6 and the grooves 9 are carefully grinded. After this sharpening, which makes all the points of the contour of the grooves cut, the tops of the teeth or fine partitions separating the grooves are softened as shown in 7a, by means of a fine-grained stone or any other process. This last operation, the importance of which will appear later, cuts off said peaks 7a of the teeth (see FIG. 5), while retaining their sharpness at the concave edges 8a located at the bottom of the furrows.
Thus prepared, the set of elementary cutters formed by the tool is mounted on an axis rotating at several thousand revolutions per minute, and the brushes are presented to its action either manually or by means of a work-holder device, for example of the type described in French patent 827,521 in the name of the applicant.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The operation is as follows:
The tool 1 being rotated in the direction of arrow F in Figure 6, the brush is pressed substantially normally against its surface, as shown in this figure, either by hand or by a Any mechanism comprising, preferably, a work clamp, leaving the horsehair a certain flexibility. The bristles engage individually in the parallel grooves 6 and they are guided by the partitions separating the various grooves acting in the manner of a comb to keep the bristles facing the concave cutting edges.
The bristles 10, which, after cutting, most often have burrs 10a (figure 7) are subjected to the action of the only cutting edges which remain at the bottom of the furrows, and if these bristles were perfectly rigid their ends would be rounded in the plane passing through the axis of rotation of the tool; but due to the flexibility of the bristles and the high rotational speed, the action of the cutting edges of concave profile is also felt on the upper front edge of the cylindrical end of the bristles. In a few moments the angular end of each horsehair 10 is rounded at 10b over about half of its periphery, as can be seen in figure 8.
If one operates in two stages in opposite directions, either by means of a tool rotating alternately in one direction and the other, or by means of two identical tools rotating in the opposite direction, to which the brush is presented successively. , one obtains a rounding in foam form of the end of the horsehair. These appear to have been rotated along their axes, the rounding 10b (FIG. 9) obtained during the second milling operation completing the profile obtained during the first operation.
It should be noted that the peaks 7a of the cutting edges having been rounded as has been said above, these peaks cannot damage the horsehair by digging ridges or scratches on their surface.
In fact, if during the rotation of the tool, a vertex 7a comes into contact with a horsehair, the latter flexes more until its end passes over the corresponding edge to engage. in one or the other of the adjacent furrows, in which it will be guided during the end of the operation. It should also be noted that due to the good conductivity and the relatively large mass of the metal constituting the tool and the rapid rotation which ensures its good cooling, the heating of the end of the bristles is not to be feared and that no damage to them can result when using polyamide monohulls. In addition, the absence of any abrasive eliminates any chance of this material encrustation in the end of the horsehair.
The mono-block rounding tool which has just been described gives full satisfaction for the treatment of brushes which have either a rectilinear cutting profile or a curved or slightly sloping cutting profile with respect to the implantation surface of the bristles. on the frame.
'In the case of brushes with a very sinuous cutting profile, or steeply sloping at certain points relative to the implantation surface, the guiding of the end of the bristles by the partitions separating the grooves 6 is no longer sufficient . In parts of the profile that are very inclined on the implantation surface, the application pressure of the brush against the tool drives the bristles laterally out of the guide furrows, the work of the tool is poor in these parts with a steep slope.
In this case, it is necessary, to obtain a good result, to use a tool providing better guidance of the bristles.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In its second embodiment, the tool is -formé'par two flanges 11 and 12 between which are held thin discs of different diameters which can be classified into two categories each having a well-defined role, to sa.see:
1) The milling disks 13 (fig. 12, 13 and 15), the thickness of which is a little greater than the diameter of the bristles (once about a quarter). These are real elementary cutters, the cylindrical periphery of which is hollowed out along the middle of the thickness of a groove 14 with a curvilinear bottom and flanks much shorter than those of the grooves of the mono-block tool (fig 15) . The periphery of these milling discs is cut with a series of radial notches 15 which form the teeth of the milling cutter and make the latter sharp.
2) Very thin populating discs 16 (fig. 12, 14 and 15) with tapered and polished edges which have no teeth on their periphery.
All the discs just mentioned are stacked on a common drive shaft by regularly alternating a milling disc, a combing disc and so on ...
The diameters of the discs are determined so that the line enveloping the bottoms of the grooves 14 of the milling discs, stacked with the combing discs, corresponds to the profile of the sinuous section of the brush 17 to be obtained (FIG. II).
The diameters of the combing discs are deduced from the diameters of the milling discs so that they emerge from them by a minimum quantity h (fig. 15) equal to four to five times the diameter of the horsehair to be treated. .
Thanks to this arrangement of milling discs of variable diameters held on a drive axis between two combing discs, the profile of any brush can easily be reproduced by creating, on the peripheral surface of the tool, narrow annular corridors of guide, with smooth side walls, which positively hold the horsehair in front of the cutting edges of the milling discs whatever the slope of the profile to be produced.
The discs can be easily cut from hard steel sheets, hardened and rectified after use of their periphery, no marking of their mutual position being necessary, they can be simply clamped between the two flanges 11 and 12o
With the disc tool which has just been described, as with the mono-block tool, the rounding of the ends of the bristles will be carried out in two stages, either by rotating the same tool alternately in both directions, or, preferably, by using two identical tools rotating in opposite directions and by presenting the brush successively to the action of one and the other of these tools.
It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the process which has just been described, in particular by substituting equivalent technical means, without going beyond the scope of the present invention.
In particular, the periphery of the combing discs could be given an asymmetrical shape, or a variable inclination along the circumference making it possible to reject with certainty the ends of the hair in the annular guide passages. mono-block tool, it is not excluded to give the sides of the furrows different inclinations making it possible to better maintain the ends of the bristles when the slope of the profile of the brush is not too high.
It also goes without saying that the method according to the invention is applicable to brushes in general and that its application to toothbrushes

which has been indicated herein should not be construed in a limiting sense.
CLAIMS. l.- Method for mechanically rounding the end of the bristles or bristles of the brushes, characterized in that the end of these bristles is subjected to the action of a cutter with a rapidly rotating concave profile.
