<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

clear escapes to the outside by passing through the openings e made in the upper part of the device (Fig. 1) or even in its lower part (Fig. 2) to be collected in appropriate pipes not shown.
The solid particles, separated from the liquid under the effect of centrifugal force, are collected at a distance from the axis of rotation in the chamber c where their compactness gradually increases. This gradually increases the weight drawn by the rotating chamber until the centrifugal force overcomes the action of the spring g (Fig.l) and produces the lifting of the upper part d of the chamber, revealing an opening 1 on its entire periphery, this opening allowing the densest part of the sludge to exit to the outside to be collected in a suitable collector, not shown.
By suitably modifying the initial load of the spring g and the liquid feed rate, it is possible to remove sludge with low liquid contents and the automaticity of the device is ensured thanks to the equilibrium conditions provided between the spring power and the vertical component of liquid pressure produced by centrifugal force. Of course, the spring can be replaced by a system of equivalent springs. An apparatus where the lower part of the chamber c would be movable instead of the upper part, would also function under the best conditions. It would be the same for an apparatus having a horizontal axis of rotation instead of a vertical axis.
In order to facilitate the separation, the well-known clarifying cones, the effectiveness of which is universally accepted, can still be placed inside the chamber c.
The load P on the spring can be calculated using the following formula: '
EMI1.1
p '"r # (1 (R2 - r2) 2 +!:!. (R2 - rm2) 2J where w is the angular velocity expressed in radians per second, g the acceleration of gravity in meters, per second squared; R, r and r are the radii in meters shown in Fig. 1.8 is the specific weight of the liquid in kg / cm3. A is the difference between the specific weight of concentrated sludge and that of pure liquid in kg / cn The result P is given in kg.
The maximum pressure p in kg / cm2 which is found immediately inside the closing edges of chamber c can be calculated by means of the following formula:
EMI1.2
- U 2 Lt (., 12 2) + j, (R2 2) where the symbols are the same as in. previous formula.
However, if even with reduced maximum diameters, a normal number of turns is increased in the case of devices of this kind, the load on the springs quickly reaches inadmissible values. This makes it necessary to mount springs which are extremely robust and of reduced sensitivity, so that the operation of the apparatus may be compromised when the specific weight of the sludge is very close to that of the pure liquid.
It is therefore advisable to no longer resort to a spring but to a clearing house, as shown schematically and by way of example in FIG. 2 where the apparatus remains identical to that of FIG. 1 with simple substitution in place of the spring g of a compensation chamber i full of a liquid whose specific weight is equal to that of the liquid to be clarified. The upper part of the chamber c and the lower part of the chamber i balance each other. Such a system is rotated
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
with any number of revolutions per minute and whatever its diameter, the limit being given simply by the resistance of the materials.
A change in the filling of the compensation chamber is equivalent to a change in the load applied to the spring of Fig. 1.
The peripheral maintenance year 1 of the clearinghouse can be ensured by any known system. The machine can also be executed by combining the solutions of Figs. 1 and 2, by arranging for this purpose a compensation chamber in order to balance the thrust of the liquid alone and by causing the increase in thrust due to the concentrated sludge to be supported by a relatively weak spring arranged as in the case of FIG. 1.
The increase in thrust, instead of being supported by a rotating spring integrally with the apparatus, can be absorbed by a subject stopper. by the action of a spring fixed to the frame of the device and which can be adjusted at any time or by a counterweight.
With slight modifications, the apparatus shown in FIG.
1 is also suitable for the separation of dust contained in gases. - Fig. 3 shows by way of example an apparatus which can be used for this purpose. The dust-laden gases are transported by a pipe not shown in a suction pipe a. The lower cone b is carried by a certain number of radial fins c which also have the object of swirling the gases, as indicated by the arrows. A diaphragm forces all the gases to pass away from the axis of rotation to increase the centrifugal effect. Thanks to this centrifugal effect, the solid particles separated from the gas are collected in the zone joining the two cones b and d and, when their weight has reached a determined value, the action of the spring 1 is overcome, which produces lowering of the lower cone b.
He thus manages to open the apparatus at g over its entire periphery in order to allow the concentrated dust to escape to the outside, this dust being collected in a suitable collector, not shown. The amount of gas which can escape together with the dust is practically negligible. The purified gases return to the axis of rotation and are braked in their gyratory movement by the radial fins f which also have the role of supporting the upper cone d. To use the residual gyratory movement, the upper part of the apparatus comprises the fins ± mounted in the manner of ordinary fans, these fins delivering the gas in a suitable spiral, not shown.
The apparatus thus plays by itself at the same time the role of a fan which is always necessary in an installation where moving gases are found.
The energy absorbed is slightly greater than that required by a fan, the internal pressure drops being extremely low. The detail to the right of FIG. 3 shows by way of example an embodiment which has been adopted for an apparatus which has given the best results.
On the lower cone b is welded another cone 1 so as to produce a rest zone 1 in which the separated dust is withdrawn from any possibility of being taken up by the gas stream.
The diaphragm 1 also has a conical rim intended to define a passage in which the dust separation takes place.
The closing trim, applying to. force on one or both edges forms an extremely important element; if it is sufficiently elastic, it can be so to the point of making the action of the spring superfluous. However, even in the case where the spring remains ,; the packing should be fitted as indicated in the detail of FIG.
3 to prevent the interposition of a single particle between the manholes and prevent the cones from closing.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The calculation of the load on the spring can be carried out as a first approximation by means of 'la. first formula indicated for the clarification of liquids, An exact calculation is not easy but on the other hand it is not necessary either because, due to the strong difference between the specific weight of the gas and that of the agglomerated dust, the * equilibrium condition can be reached with extreme ease. @
In the case of dusts of a size of a few microns, use should be made of two rotating elements or more connected in series, as shown by way of example in FIG. 4.
A single spring ensures the closure and the different chambers are put in relative equilibrium, causing the opening of the chamber where the most dense deposit occurs. Apparatus of the type shown in FIG. 3 but which would have a movable upper cone instead of the lower cone, or else which would have a horizontal axis of rotation instead of a vertical axis, would also make it possible to achieve the aim in question.
