<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

IMPROVEMENTS IN THE TRANSMISSION MECHANISMS OF PISTON MACHINES
The present invention relates to improvements to the transmission mechanisms of piston machines (engines, pumps or compressors, and in general all motive or receiving machines with pistons) of the known "frame" type, ie. that is to say in which the crank pin of the crank, instead of being connected directly to one or more pistons by means of oscillating connecting rods, is twisted in a bearing which slides in a movable frame to which the pistons are connected by rigid rods.
In such mechanisms, the driving force or resistance acting in the alignment of the piston rods has the effect of subjecting the frame, apart from the dead centers, to alternating overturning torques which are generally absorbed by pads formed by two of the sides of the frame and resting on slides parallel to said piston rods. As a result, during walking, said pads only bear on their extreme edges and this results in rapid wear of these latter and of the slides. The contact surfaces become curved and cause the machine to run noisily.
The present invention remedies these drawbacks.
It is characterized in that the support of the frame on a single slideway is effected by means of two skids articulated on the frame, symmetrically on either side of its axis perpendicular to the slideway, and each provided with 'a counter shoe which prevents the frame from moving away from the slide.
The invention is further characterized by a particular mode
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
coupling the piston rods to the frame, whereby each rod is articulated on an axis carried by a yoke mounted on said frame, without play in the direction of the forces acting on the rod, while the clearances provided between said yoke and the frame in the other directions allow said rod to remain centered in alignment with the corresponding cylinder, regardless of the wear of the shoes or the slide.
In the accompanying drawing, there is shown, and hereinafter described, an embodiment according to the invention, of a device for guiding the frame, applied by way of example to a machine with two horizontal cylinders. zontals opposite, double-acting, the two pistons can be motors, or receivers, or one of them motor and the other receiver.
In these drawings: - Figure I is a sectional elevation showing the entire machine.
- Figure 2 shows a particular method of coupling a piston rod to the frame.
As shown in Figure I, the frame I of the machine supports, by bearings not shown, the crank shaft 2, the crank pin 3 is - journaled in a bearing '4 capable of moving vertically inside a . rigid framed 5. Two pistons 6 moving in two cylinders 7 integral with the frame I are rigidly connected to the frame 5 by the piston rods 8 'crossing the cable glands 9. At its upper part, the frame 5 is provided with two lugs 10 each supporting an axis II on which is articulated a shoe 12 coming into contact with the underside of a single slide 13 fixed to the frame I. Each of the shoes 12 is provided with a counter-shoe 14 which comes into contact with the upper face of the slide 13.
It is easy to understand how, while the machine is running, the continuous circular movement of the crankpin 3 is transformed into reciprocating rectilinear movement of the frame assembly 5, piston rods 8 and pistons.
6 or, conversely, the reciprocating rectilinear motion in continuous circular motion.
Outside dead centers, the motor or resistance force acting in alignment with the piston rods 8 causes a tipping torque of the frame 5. Depending on the position of the crankpin 3 and the direction of the force , said torque is absorbed either by the left shoe 12 and the right counter shoe 14, or, conversely, by the right shoe 12 and the left counter shoe 14.
Due to the articulation of the pads 12 around their axes
II, the reactions are distributed uniformly over the entire length of the contact faces of the pads and counter-pads.
However, to prevent tilting of the piston rods in the event of appreciable wear of the pads or the slide, the rigid coupling of the said rods to the frame can be replaced by the device shown in FIG. 2.
In this variant, the piston rod 8 ends with an eye articulated on a pin 15 mounted in a yoke 16 trapped in a housing of the frame 5 where it is held, without longitudinal play, by a plate 17.
A Systematic .5 !: game is provided in the vertical direction between the yoke and its housing.
Thanks to the possibility of sliding the yoke 16 in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
vertical direction, the piston rod can remain centered in alignment with the corresponding cylinder, regardless of the wear of the shoes or the slide.
It is obvious that the improvements described above can be applied to any other type of frame machine, to one or more vertical or inclined cylinders, single or double acting, without going beyond the scope of the invention.
Likewise, in the case of a single-acting machine, the connection between the frame and the piston or pistons could be formed by connecting rods articulated both on the frame and on the pistons.
