Instrument for planting potatoes, seed onions and other plants.
This invention relates to an instrument for planting potatoes, onions, seeds and plants of various kinds but also usable as a weeder for weeding land and for repairing certain bare or damaged portions of lawns or lawns.
This instrument comprises a hollow cylinder welded or otherwise fixed at its upper end to a U-shaped metal bar, the crown of which constitutes a handle or is provided with a handle, in said cylinder being mounted so as to be able to slide a piston to which is secured a rod passing through a small hole in a crosspiece bracing the branches of the U-bar, the upper end of the piston rod itself constituting a handle and carrying a rubber collar or sleeve or even a metal spring which stops the

downward movement of the piston rod coming into contact with the spacer cross member.
The piston may be fitted with a profiled end piece in order to be able to dig a cavity in the clod of earth torn up by the instrument and in which the seeds or seedlings can be placed. This end piece may be constituted by an attached piece with more or less pronounced taper provided with two flexible wires projecting from its base and capable of being engaged through two diametrically opposed holes of the piston, then folded back so as to come. occupy a position ensuring the temporary fixing of this tip against the piston. As a variant, two studs projecting relative to the base of this end piece can pass through holes in the piston to which they are then fixed by a flexible metal wire folded into a hairpin and engaged in holes in the studs.
In the attached drawing: -
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the assembly of this instrument or tool usable for planting in agriculture or in horticulture.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the piston disengaged from the cylinder and the conical tip before it is attached to the piston.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view showing a variant of the method of fixing the conical tip to the piston.
Fig. 4 is a plan view corresponding to FIG. 3.
The bar A with a U-profile consists of a fairly slender metal rod bent twice on itself according to the shape shown in fig. 1. The ends of this bar are welded to the points B at the top of a tuba G of sheet metal of suitable thickness which constitutes the cylinder and which may be fully or partially split in its entire length to compensate or prevent excessive compression. of the ground. The base of the cylinder 0 has cutting teeth D, preferably three in number. The piston E consists of a sheet metal disc which may have a slight

curvature in one or the other direction, so as to be able to conform the upper surface of the clod of earth * This disc or piston E is welded or otherwise fixed to the rod F of the piston.
This rod passes through a hole made in a metal spacer G welded to the two branches of the bar A.
The upper end of the rod F of the piston E can be bent roughly as shown to form a handle F1 On this rod F but below this handle is mounted a washer H which forms the stop for application of a shock-absorbing sleeve or collar J made of rubber or equivalent material * On the crown of the bar A is advantageously engaged a rubber sleeve K forming a handle.
The piston E can be turned in the cylinder C by rotating the handle F1, so as to flatten or conform the upper surface of the clod of earth, You can also pull the piston E towards you to release it from the cylinder for cleaning *
The piston E is pierced with two holes E1 receiving two flexible wires L of copper of equivalent material which are cast in a hollow conical end M which can be fixed to the piston E by passing these wires L through the holes E1, E1 and to the drawdown of these wires.
In the construction variant which is shown in figs, 3 and 4, the end piece M is provided in any suitable manner with two nipples N pierced with holes receiving a flexible metal wire or other 0 having the shape of a pin. with hair that

To use this instrument for planting, the cylinder Ç is driven into the ground at the desired location, then it is imparted in both directions a pivoting movement, so that it clears a passage by cutting the soil up to to the required depth.
It is then raised, so that it carries with it the clod of earth which can then be driven back into a previous hole.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
This is done by pulling on the handle K while keeping the piston E fixed with the handle - The clod of terra can also be placed in any suitable location for subsequent work.
If you want to use this tool to pull up large weeds, for example from lawns or lawns or to repair parts of a field where the grass is lacking, we cut out portions of the defective grass and replace them. by new parts of grass which are introduced into the hole (s) made for this purpose, by exerting slight pressure therein with the foot.
To obtain clods of earth provided with central hollows intended to receive seeds, seedlings, or even young plants, the accessory nozzle M is fixed on the piston E, then the cylinder Ç is driven into the ground or into any other what other properly prepared compost to the required depth. The clod of earth is then lifted and placed on a board or other suitable surface, then the soil of this clod is compressed until it takes the suitable consistency while printing on the handle F1 of the piston. F one or two pivoting movements, after which the clod of earth with its central hollow is driven out.
