<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Method for attaching plastic materials to electrically conductive materials".
This invention relates to a method for attaching two parts together, one of which is at least partly made of a plastic material, especially thermoplastic material, and the other at least partly of an electrically conductive material. The well-known method of attaching two parts, for example of thermoplastic material, is carried out by heating both parts to a sufficiently high temperature and pressing them together. This method applied to attaching a part consisting of plastic material to an electrically conductive part, for example made of metal, does not provide the desired adhesion of the two parts to each other.
In order to overcome this drawback, according to the present invention, the parts to be fastened together are placed in a high-frequency induction field of sufficient strength. This results in a firm alignment of the two parts
The method according to the invention has the advantage of being simple. The bond is firm and durable. The method also takes only a short time.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to a special embodiment of the method of the present invention, during the subjection to the high-frequency induction field, the part made of plastic material and the part made of electrically conductive material are pressed together if necessary. The plastics contemplated in this invention are particularly thermoplastics.
The method is further illustrated by examples with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section and a side view of a cylindrical part of electrically conductive material covered with plastic material and grommets.
Figure 2 represents a metal wire with a coating serving as electrical insulation.
Figure 3 represents a hollow cylindrical metal piece internally coated with plastic material, in longitudinal section and side view.
Figure 4 represents a hollow cylindrical piece made of plastic material, provided with a metal reinforcement, in longitudinal section and side view.
In figure 1, 1 represents a cylindrical metal part with two shaft necks 2. The plastic material 3 is placed on the metal part 1, after which the whole is placed in a high-frequency induction field. As a result, the periphery of the part 1 gets a high temperature, whereby the plastic material is heated. Both parts will stick together. This state will be perpetuated after cooling.
The possibility is also provided to execute a compression on the plastic material during the submission of the whole to a high-frequency induction field, for example by means of pressure pieces 4.
According to figure 2, 1 represents a metal wire surrounded by a plastic material 3, which forms the electrical insulating material. The whole is also subjected to a high-frequency induction field here.
According to figure 3, 1 represents a hollow cylindrical metal part
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in front of. A coating 3 made of plastic material is applied along the inside. The submission of the whole to a high-frequency induction field here also produces a firm adhesion of the coating on the inner surface of the metal part.
Another application of the method according to the invention, with reference to figure 4, consists in realizing a hollow cylindrical piece 3 made of plastic material, the wall of which has a certain thickness and in which wall a metal reinforcement 1 is located. As a result, the properties of the whole will be markedly changed, with particular regard to resistance to tensile, compressive and twisting forces and to inward atmospheric pressure, properties which are significantly increased.
In each of the cited applications, a compression can be exerted on the plastic material simultaneously or shortly after being subjected to a high-frequency induction field. It is further envisaged that use is made of an intermediate which can promote the attachment of the plastic and the electrically conductive materials to each other.
It is understood that this invention is not limited to the above described examples of application. Many other applications than the cited "can be realized without going beyond the scope of this patent, will, of course, depend on the requirements set forth below. Thus, instead of the hollow reinforced cylinder, one can also, for example, have a flat or curved wall of achieve a certain thickness with metal reinforcement.
E I S C H E N.
1.- A way of attaching two parts to each other, one of which is at least partly made of a plastic material, in the particular thermoplastic material, and the other at least partly of an electroconductive material, characterized in that the parts to be attached together are placed in a high-frequency induction field. ** WARNING ** End of DESC field may contain beginning of CLMS field **.
