<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"METHOD FOR CASTING FILMS AND FOELIES
AND THE PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED THEREOF. 11
This method relates to a method for casting films and foils on a support of, preferably a drum or strip casting machine, which is coated with a casting layer consisting of macromolecular substances, to the device to be used in this method, as well as to the equipment therein. - co-manufactured products.
It is common practice to prepare films and foils by casting the film-forming solution onto a rotating drum or a revolving belt of a casting machine.
Initially, the film-forming solution was poured directly onto a high-gloss surface. However, the smooth metal surface is easily damaged, with the damaged areas making the film harder to peel off, resulting in the appearance of matte spots. The support then has to be polished, which is relatively expensive.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In order to avoid these disadvantages, the metal surface of the drum, resp. of the belt, to be covered with a so-called cast layer, which can easily be renewed in case of damage or wear.
Many substances have been proposed for that purpose. One of the oldest agents used is the gelatin coating. However, such a casting layer has the disadvantage that it soon becomes brittle due to the continuous contact with the organic solvents of the film-forming solutions and therefore often has to be renewed.
It is further known, in casting the films, to use cast layers consisting of cellulose derivatives and vinyl compounds, which are insoluble in the solvents customary for the film to be cast. However, these casting layers are never completely insensitive to the intended solvents, but swell slightly therein, which has the result that the film usually comes off the casting layer only with difficulty.
In order to render the casting layer insensitive to the solvents, the applied casting layer was surface treated, for example saponified. This method has the disadvantage that it requires a lot of care and time. Moreover, the fact that the casting layer no longer consists of a homogeneous whole sometimes gives rise to all kinds of errors.
The Applicant has now found that polyaethylene has extremely advantageous properties as a raw material for forming the cast layer and, consequently, for the production from a film-forming solution of films which peel off easily and have complete high gloss.
A casting layer, which consists entirely or at least for the most part of polyaethylene, is not only completely insensitive to the majority of the film-forming solutions of macromolecular substances, but also has the property of repelling the film formed on the casting layer, so that relatively soon after casting the film, it detaches very easily from the casting layer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This also makes it possible to increase the speed of the drum or metal belt, or to use a shorter metal belt at the same speed.
At a temperature below 60 DEG C., polyaethylene is insensitive to practically all organic solvents, so that the most common and inexpensive solvents can be used for the preparation of film-forming solutions.
The invention also includes a method for manufacturing a casting layer from polyethylene, which obtains its high-gloss surface by pressing a high-gloss polished metal roller heated to 120-130 ° C against the surface of the casting layer.
It is also possible to simultaneously form and surface polish the casting layer on the metal belt: A polyaethylene solution is heated to 100 ° C and applied to a metal belt, after evaporation of the solvent, a polished metal roller is heated. up to 120 C, pressed to the surface.
Or the polyethylene can be melted in a heated watering can and spread on the metal belt by means of a doctor blade.
The casting layer can also be formed as follows:
Between the advancing metal belt heated to 120 ° C and a co-rotating roller heated to 100 ° C, polyaethylene beads are deposited with the casting layer being formed on the metal belt and polished at the same time.
It is also possible to apply a preformed polyethylene film to the metal belt, or to stretch this film as an endless belt on two drums, around which they are carried without a metal belt, as a self-contained casting belt. runs.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The following examples serve only to illustrate the invention without, however, limiting it in the least.
Example 1:
A casting layer for film can be obtained as follows: A solution of the following composition is poured onto the surface of a metal strip at about 100 ° C: toluol 5 liters xylol 5 liters polyaethylene 20 kg
After evaporation of the solvent, a high-gloss polished roller, heated to about 120 ° C, is pressed against the polyethylene layer, thus obtaining a high-gloss.
Example 2:
Polyethylene granules are sprinkled on a rotating metal casting belt, heated to 120 ° C, and pressed by a polished roller heated to about 100 ° C. In this way a suitable casting layer of polyethylene is obtained which adheres tightly to the casting belt and has a completely high gloss.
Example 3:
An endless metal band is covered with a polyethylene film. A high-gloss polished roll, heated to approximately 120 ° C, is pressed against the polyaethylene layer, causing it to adhere to the metal belt and at the same time obtain a high-gloss surface.
When using thick polyaethylene films, an endless belt can be made therefrom which, stretched on two drums and guided on small rolls, can be used as an independent casting belt.
Compared to the known methods, the film is cast on a casting layer consisting of polyethylene, already repelled from the casting layer as soon as the film starts to dry.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Owing to its toughness and great flexibility, the polyethylen layer is much more durable than the hitherto known casting layers, while due to its thermoplasticity, a possible renewal of the high gloss can be obtained with a hot treatment at 115 ° C, without removing the layer.
