<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Control systems by regulating generators.
The invention relates to electrical control systems, and in particular to the control of DC motors with variable excitation.
By using a regulating generator with a so-called pilot inductor winding to control the excitation of a motor, the regulating generator very quickly follows the setting changes of the pilot excitation, which is generally an interesting characteristic of these regulating generators. However, in some cases, a sharp change in motor excitation produces an exaggerated current in the motor rotor during the transition period, as the motor accelerates or brakes while changing from one speed to the other.
According to the invention, these difficulties are eliminated by providing the regulating generator with a compensating inductor.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tion which is fed in opposition to the pilot inductor during a transition period following an adjustment of the excitation of the pilot inductor.
Preferably, the compensation inductor is supplied as a function of the difference between the output voltage of the regulating generator and the voltage applied to the inductor of the motor.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a regulating generator is employed to power the inductor of an exciter sending electrical energy to the inductor of a motor in a control system. variable voltage. The pilot inductor of the regulating generator is supplied under the control of a main switch, and the differential inductor is energized according to the current applied to the inductor of the motor. Runaway is reduced thanks to an anti-runaway inductor supplied according to the magnitude of the current; motor inductor.
The peak values of the induced current of the motor otherwise reached, when the excitation of the motor is suddenly increased, are reduced by means of a compensating inductor supplied as a function of the difference between the output voltages of the regulating generator and the exciter sending electrical energy to the motor inductor. The compensating inductor is web-connected in such a way that it opposes the magneto-motive force of the pilot inductor and thus slows the rate of increase of the output voltage of the regulating generator.
A selected embodiment of the invention is reproduced by way of example in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 gives a diagram of the engine control system.
Figure 2 shows a series of characteristic operating curves, indicating the improvement obtained in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
system shown in Figure 1, compared to systems not in accordance with the invention.
In FIG. 1, the reference 10 designates as a whole a control system for a main reversible motor 12 connected to a variable voltage system supplied by a main generator 13.
The main motor 12 comprises an armature 14, a main inductor 15, a current limiting inductor 16 and a compensation inductor 17. The compensation inductor 17 is placed in series with the armature 14 to supply the main generator 13. comprising an armature 18 with a compensation inductor 19 and a main inductor 20.
The output voltage of the main generator 13 is adjusted by varying the power supply of the main inductor 20, the latter being connected to a source of electrical energy such as an exciter 22. The latter comprises a driven armature 23. by a motor 24, and an inductor 25. The latter is supplied by a regulating generator 27 with armature 28, anti-runaway inductor 29, self-excited inductor 30, differential inductor 31 and pilot inductor 32.
The pilot inductor 32 is connected to a suitable source of electric power, for its variable supply, through a series of adjusting resistors 34, 35 and '36 by means of "forward" relays and "reverse" 38 and 39 with windings 40 and 41 supplied via a main contactor 43 which may be of the drum type.
The differential inductor 31 is connected to the terminals of the inductor 18 of the main generator so as to be supplied in accordance with the output voltage of the generator and in a direction such that it opposes the magnetomotive force. pilot inductor 32.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The self-exciting inductor 50 is connected in series with the main inductor 20 and the armature 23 of the exciter 22 so as to. be supplied in accordance with the induced current of the main generator. Anti-runaway inductor 29 is connected in parallel with main inductor 20 and in a direction such as to oppose the magneto-motive force of self-excited inductor 30.
The main inductor 15 of the motor 12 is supplied by an exciter 45 comprising an armature 46 and an inductor 47.
The exciter has sufficient flow to "force" the power to coil 15 so as to effect rapid changes in the. engine running. The output voltage of the exciter 45 is regulated by means of a regulating generator of the motor 50 comprising an armature 51, a pilot inductor 52, a differential inductor 53, an anti-runout inductor 54, a current limiting inductor 55 and a compensation inductor 56.
The pilot inductor 52 is variably supplied with a suitable source of electrical energy through a series of adjustment resistors 57, 58 and 59, by means of the main switch 43, so as to be able to vary the output of the generator. control 50. The differential inductor 53 is placed in series with the main inductor 15 and the armature 46 of the exciter 45 so as to be supplied as a function of the inductor current of the motor and in such a direction or it opposes the magnetomotive force of the pilot inductor 52. The anti-runaway inductor 54 is paralleled with the main inductor 15 so as to be supplied in accordance with the current applied to the main inductor. .
The peak values of the armature current of the main motor 12 are limited by the use of a current limiting generator 60 comprising an armature 61, an inductor
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
current limiter 62 and a shorted inductor 64. The current limiting generator 60 is of a type which has a flow characteristic such that the output voltage of the generator is maintained at substantially zero until such time as. the current in the inductor 62 reaches a determined value, the output voltage rising rapidly from this moment.
The inductor 62 of the generator 60 is supplied in accordance with the armature current of the main motor 12, being for example connected to the terminals of the compensating inductor 17 in series with an adjustment resistor. 66 used to adjust the value of the limit armature current that the main motor 12 can reach. The armature 61 is connected to the current limiting inductor 16 of the main motor and to the current limiting inductor 55 of the regulating generator of the motor 50 by means of relays 67 and 68 "forward" and "on". rear "having windings 69 and 70 supplied through the main switch 43.
In order to limit more effectively the peak values of the armature current of the main motor 12 during its operation as a generator when the current of the main inductor 15 increases by the actuation of the main switch 43 bypassing the adjustment resistors 58 and 59, the compensating inductor 56 is arranged to supply power under conditions and in a direction such that it opposes the magnetomotive force of the pilot inductor 52. For this purpose, the winding 56 is connected between a terminal of the armature 51 of the regulating generator, and a variable tap 72 of a voltage divider 73 placed at the terminals of the induction 46 of the exciter 45 of the motor.
In this way, the compensation inductor 56 will be supplied in accordance with the difference between the output voltage of the regulating generator of the motor 50 and any desired part of the motor.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
output voltage of the exciter of the motor 45, and only when such a difference exists. The tap 72 is adjustable so that the influence of the coil 56 can be varied. A direct current device, such as a rectifier 75, is placed in series with the compensating inductor 56 to prevent this winding is not supplied when the main switch 43 is actuated in the direction of reduction of the current of the main inductor 15.
In order to obtain a relatively high voltage at the generator each time the current of the motor 12 is suddenly increased, a current relay 78 has its winding 79 put in series with the main inductor 15 of the motor 12. The auxiliary control line 82 has its excitation winding 83 supplied with a suitable source of electrical energy through the normally closed contact 78a of the current relay 78.
The auxiliary relay 82 bypasses the adjustment resistors 35 and 36 so that the output voltage of the main generator 13 is relatively high each time the main switch 43 is actuated to reverse the operation of the motor 18, this action being so rapid that the current of the main inductor 15 does not have time to increase before the main switch 43 starts. reduce the current of the inductor 30 of the main generator, by being brought into its position of reverse direction of travel.
A voltage relay 85 controls by the voltage of the main generator it is used to bypass the adjustment resistors 58 and 59, so as to maintain a relatively strong motor excitation, each time the voltage of the generator 13 is lower than one. determined value ;, during operation.
From the point of view of operation of the system, the "forward" relays 38 and 67 will be supplied through the contact segment 43a of the main switch 43, when the latter
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
is operated in the "forward !! direction. The output voltage of the motor exciter 45, which is determined by the power supply to the pilot inductor 52 of the motor regulator generator, will initially have a maximum value, the adjustment resistors 58 and 59 being short-circuited initially by the conductor 88 and the segment 43c of the main switch.
The output voltage of the main generator 13 a. initially a minimum value, the pilot inductor 32 of its regulating generator 27 being connected to the source of electrical energy in series with the regulating resistors 34, 35 and 36 through the segment 43c of the main switch.
When the main switch 43 is moved in the "forward" direction and passed through different positions, the adjusting resistors 36 and 35 are successively short-circuited so as to increase the current in the pilot inductor. 32 which leads to an increase in the output voltage of the main generator 13 and an increase in the speed of the main motor 12. By pushing the main switch 43 further in the "forward" direction, it disconnects the conductor 88 of segment 43 ± and the resistors 58 and 59 are placed in series with the pilot inductor 52 of the motor regulating generator, by successive movements of the main switch, so as to further increase the main motor speed 12.
If the current of the pilot inductor 52 increases rapidly by the abrupt displacement of the main switch 43 in the opposite direction so as to successively short-circuit the adjusting resistors 59 and 58, the armature current of the main motor 12 tends to reverse and reaches a relatively high peak value in the opposite direction due to recovery. However, the output voltage of the motor regulator regulator. 50 increases before the output voltage of the exciter of the motor 45 that it controls and, therefore, a
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
Excitation current will be pushed into the current compensating inductor due to the difference between the output voltages of the regulating generator 50 and the exciter 45.
Since the magnetomotive force of the compensating inductor 56 opposes that of the pilot inductor 52, the rate of increase of the output voltage of the regulating generator 50, which is determined by the current in the regulator. pilot inductor 52, will be reduced as long as there is a difference between the output voltages of the regulating generator and of the exciter, and this at all times. As a result, the voltage applied to the main inductor 15 is reduced and the speed of boosting the motor excitation is reduced.
This result can be clearly seen by referring to the curves of Figure 2, the solid lines a, b, c and d of which respectively represent the voltage (a) applied to the inductor 15 of the motor, the current (b) of the inductor of the exciter 47, the output voltage (c) of the regulating generator 50, and the current, (d) of 1 inductor 15 of the motor.
These curves give the instantaneous values of these quantities when the main switch 43 is operated to increase the current in the main inductor 15 of the main motor 12, the regulating generator of the motor 50 having no inductor. compensation 56 according to 2, the present invention. The dotted curves a ', b', c 'and d.' represent corresponding values of these quantities under like operating conditions, the regulating generator of the engine 50 (Vint provided, this time, with an undue compensation turn 53 in accordance with the present invention.
It will be noted that the relatively high voltage peak of the regulating generator 50, represented by the curve c, is greatly reduced as shown by the dotted curve c '.
As the compensation inductor 56 of this
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
machine is supplied according to the difference between the regulating generator 50 and the exciter 45, output voltage, which-: exists because of the much faster response of the regulating generator whose output voltage must obviously rise before that of the exciter that it controls, 45, this decrease in the output voltage of the regulation generator being reflected in the voltage applied to the main inductor 15 of the motor 12, like the shows the curve a '.
Although this voltage reaches a maximum approximately the same as that at a, it will be noted that this maximum of the curve a 'is reached later, due to the retarding effect of the compensating inductor. This shift in the voltage curve results in a corresponding delay in the increase in the excitation current in the main inductor 15, which is illustrated by the shift of the curve d 'with respect to the curve d. Therefore, the increase of the current in the main inductor 15 takes place in a longer time, and the peak values of the armature current of the motor are reduced.
Even if the kinetic energy produced in the main motor 12 is proportional to the square of the speed, the reduction in the initial speed of increase in excitation, due to the action of the compensating inductor 56, allows that the energy of the motor is returned regularly to the main generator 13 and its driving motor without a significant spike at the start of the recovery period.
As soon as the voltage of the exciter 45 of the motor is equal to that of the regulating generator 50, the compensation inductor 56 is no longer supplied, so that it will not influence the normal operating characteristics. steady state of the regulating generator. By using the rectifier 75, the excitation of the main motor 12 can be reduced.

without acting on the supply of the compensation inductor 56 serve to delay the change of current in the main inductor 15.
The foregoing description clearly shows that the compensation inductor 56 can be used with any control system, variable voltage or the like. By using unidirectional conductors 75 having the correct polarity the compensating inductor can be used to limit the values of armature current peak arising from variations in the excitation of the motor in one or the other direction.
By omitting the rectifying device 75, the switching inductor 56 can be used to delay the change in excitation in either direction, if desired.
