.BREVET D'INVENTION -PROCEDE DE TRAITEMENT DE CERTAINES MATIERES PROTEIQUES EN VUE D'EN EXTRAIRE DES- PRODUITS PROPRES A LA CONSOMPTION certaines matières d'origine végétale et, pami elles, les tourteaux de graines oléagineuses obtenus pax pressage et des- huilage, contiennent des éléments nutritifs précieux;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
On a déjà tenté de résoudre le problème par extraction de la ricine contenue dans les tourteaux ;

PATENT OF INVENTION -PROCESS OF TREATMENT OF CERTAIN PROTEIN MATERIALS WITH A VIEW TO EXTRACTING THEREFOR- PRODUCTS FIT FOR CONSUMPTION certain materials of plant origin and, pami them, oilseed cakes obtained by pressing and de-oiling, contain valuable nutrients;
in particular certain cakes are of great interest for the preparation of alimentaixes products., on condition, however, that they have been freed from the harmful and sometimes toxic substances which they contain. It is the ces for the industrial meal of Rioin.
This meal, poor in starches but rich in pxoteins, frequently contains 4.3 percent nitrogen (24 percent protein) when it leaves the oil mill. In the case of a sour cake. from seed shelled and thoroughly de-oiled by extraction, its tenaur is 8-10 percent nitrogen or 46-57 percent protein.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Castor cake is therefore rich in protein; unfortunately, one of the constituent albumins is toxic. , 8. her. see: castor beans. Because of its presence, the cake, or the matter that can be extracted from it, has not been used until now as food but only as nitrogen fertilizer.
Attempts have already been made to solve the problem by extracting the ricin contained in the cakes;
EMI3.1

so that the extraction by aqueous solvent leads to the loss of the other true soluble albumins. Processes of this kind also involve an obvious danger because no test is currently known which makes it possible to ensure with certainty.
EMI3.2
and simple that 1 '<: 11.' 'nc t7..G'n of the castor oil plant is quite total and that the consumption of the material obtained does not really present any danger. .
The method which is the object of the present invention consists in completely or partially destroying
EMI3.3
The internal bonds of the harmful or toxic proteins are located by a treatment which degrades the albuminous material until partially or totally liberating the amino acids constituting the molecule. The toxicity of these molecules. albumins from their structure
EMI3.4
This particular modification makes it possible to achieve the desired result with certainty and radically.
A practical way to achieve this destruction
EMI3.5
The in situ tion of toxic proteins, particularly applicable to the treatment of castor oil cake, consists, according to the invention, in producing the position of all the prrtéiCLU8'3 substances contained in the mixture. 'material treated by means of a hydrol $ e

, which solves' all 'said' proteins in their
EMI4.1
\ amine-acids' con-stitutüs.
'In this way.', The toxicity is totally sup-

, award-winning; moreover, the amino acids which come from the toxic protein are usable like the others.
Hydrolysis is a constant and safe process which can be put into the hands of industrial chemists; all things remaining equal: temperature, pressure, concentration of hydrogen ions, ricin is always destroyed and hydrolysis pushed to the same degree. The biological test is done once and for all and the hydrolysis is simply followed by a rapid chemical test.
All forms of hydrolysis can be used for the application of the present process. However, it seems that the best results from a practical point of view are obtained not by a hydrolysis in a basic medium which produces the racemization of amino acids, but by acid hydrolysis in particular in the presence of a strong mineral acid such as the acid. hydrochloric or phosphoric acid
In the case of hydrochloric hydrolysis, neutralization will be carried out at the end of the reaction with sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate and the sodium chloride formed can without inconvenience be kept in the final product.
In the case of phosphoric hydrolysis, the neutralization can advantageously be carried out with lime, the lime phosphate formed further improving the food value of the final product obtained.
The destruction of the internal bonds of toxic proteins can also be produced by heterolysis; this process has advantages over

The mass is heated to. boiling for four hours at atmospheric pressure. ; the treatment time can be reduced if it is carried out under pressure at higher temperatures. It will be, for example,
EMI5.5
of two hours 1100-115 0.
It should be noted that the reaction producing the destruction of ricin requires only a considerably shorter time than that mentioned above; however,

it is good to adopt sufficient processing times so that the treated material is penetrated to the core so that the safety is' complete, and to obtain the solution.

The (clear) cake slurry is brought to a pH close to d3 2 and between 1.5 and 3. The quantity of pepsin is then added to give it a maximum attack of the cake for 24 hours (attack followed by measurement of the amino or arboxyl groups released). with a common commercial pepsin, it was 1 to 3 / c of the weight of the cake used. B) At this point, the pH is brought to about 7.5 by adding soda or sodium carbonate, and a commercial pancreatin or fresh pancreas is added in sufficient quantity to obtain the maximum attack in 34 hours ( see above) ; in general, 1 to 2% of the weight of the commercial pancreatin cake should be used. We leave around 40, then neutralize to pH = 7 ,.
C) The autolysate is then added, as in Example Sem, either of yeast or of azoto-bacter and it is left for 48 hours at around 40. The procedure is as in the first case.
In all these operations the agitation promotes the action of the enzymes.
One can, -in certain cases, 'proceed with destruction. toxic proteins retaining a certain proportion of polypeptides; on the other hand, the neutralized hydrolysates obtained can be supplemented by the addition of additional substances. by auto-lysates rich in tryptophan in particular; in this way it will be possible to manufacture complete nitrogenous foods allowing not only the maintenance, but the growth of man and animal.
