<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>

DISTRIBUTED CONSTANT CIRCUIT STRUCTURE AND ELECTRONIC TUBE FOR
THE PRODUCTION OF VERY HIGH FREQUENCY WAVES
The present invention relates to improvements to electronic tubes forming an integral part of resonant structures, the subject of the main patent, and more particularly to the cathode of these tubes.

in the case of a tube intended to operate at high frequency, it is desirable that the space between the active surface of the cathode and the grid cannot vary under the action of the expansion of the elements constituting the structure of said cathode. This condition is achieved by an arrangement of the frame, which gives the certainty that any displacement
<EMI ID = 3.1> cementing of the emissive element, and subsequent to thermal expansion will take place in a direction parallel to the plane of the grid. In a particular embodiment, the frame has support elements which are in contact with the emissive element, such that thermal expansion is facilitated by turning 1:
part, around an axis perpendicular to the plane of the grid.

cathode support elements constructed and arranged in such a way that they help to minimize heat loss from the cathode emitting part as a result of radiation from the edges.
The invention will be better understood by reading the following description and by examining the appended drawings, in which FIG. 1 shows a longitudinal section of a three-electrode vacuum tube in accordance with the invention; Figure la, a plan view of the grid; Figure 2 a sectional view, on a large scale, of the cathode structure; FIG. 2a is a detailed view of part of this structu re; Figure 3, an end view of the cathode shown in Figure 2, Figure 4, a large-scale view of part of the structure shown in Figure 3; Figure 5, an exterior view. fragmentary of the upper part of said cathode structure, shown in figure 2.

frequency whose envelope is formed by two glass cylinders
10 and 11. The upper and lower ends are represented by circular metal parts 13 and 14, sealed to the corresponding ends of the cylinders 10 and 11, these two closing parts being reinforced by fixing them plates 15 and 15 ', respectively, giving stiffness. A central seal, provided for the casing, consists of rings 16 and 17 provided with flanges, respectively sealed to the cylinders 10 and 11 and welded to an annular disc
19, projecting laterally on the tube.
Inside the casing and at its upper end, there is a metal anode in the form of a hollow cylinder 22, the lower face of which is flat. This anode is supported by a strong ferrule 25 which extends beyond the closure part 13, passing through its center and which is hermetically welded to the latter. The ferrule 25 is externally threaded at 28 to facilitate connection to a mounting and cooling part; it is drilled in its center, 29, and ensures communication with the hollow part of the anode 22. pumping the tube during manufacture. A thin metal tube
33, sealed at the upper end of the pipe 29, makes it possible to seal at the end of pumping, either by pinching and welding said tube 33, or by adding a droplet of molten glass.
The disc 19 has a central opening 36, the diameter of which substantially equal to that of the lower face 23 of the anode, allows the discharge to pass. To control the latter, grid son 37, arranged as shown in Figure la, are fixed
on the underside of the disc 19, so as to occupy the opening 36. These wires are folded and arranged so that the folds are placed on perpendicular diameters, therefore oriented towards the center of the grid. This arrangement confers a certain degree of freedom with regard to the variations of the control characteristic of the tube as a result of the thermal expansion of the grid elements, and makes it possible to avoid inside them the creation of mechanical tensions. excessive due to this expansion.
The lower part of the envelope contains a cathode structure, the main emission element of which is a disc 40 of tungsten, molybdenum or tantalum, coated with thorium oxide. The plate 40 is supported by a thin cylinder 41, which constitutes an envelope of cathode structure, the details of suspension to be described later. The cylinder 41 is mounted on the closing part
<EMI ID = 7.1>
As can be seen more clearly in FIG. 2, in order to cooperate with the lower surface of the cathode disc 40, an auxiliary spiral filament 46 is provided (FIG. 2a). The latter, which may be made of tungsten, coated or not, with thorium oxide, is supported at its ends by two vertical conductive rods 48 and 49. These are, at their lower end, embedded in stronger conductors. sedtion 51 and 52, which carry current to the filament and which are connected to sealed lead conductors, themselves connected to the pins
54-55. In the device shown, the supply conductors comprise glass sleeves 56-57, respectively, melted on metal cylinders 58-59 welded to the reinforcing plate 15 to the closure piece 14.
Metal cups 61 and 62 to which the conductors 51 and 52 are respectively welded, close the lower ends of the supply conductors; pins 54 and 55 being fixed externally to the surface of said buckets. Following the passage of the heating current through the filament 46, via the conductors 51 and 52 and after application of a potential difference between the filament and the main cathode 40, a discharge may, towards the latter, s' establish-'with sufficient intensity to bring it to the emission temperature, or about 1600 degrees centigrade.
In order to minimize the heat losses from the cathode structure, an auxiliary screen is provided comprising a metal cup 65. The latter, which also serves to direct the emission of the filament 46 against the 4U part of the cathode, is formed.
<EMI ID = 8.1>
is supported on conductors 51 and 52, by quartz insulators
69-70. To fix said cup 65 thereto, a U-section console 71 is provided, which covers the insulators and which is fixed to the lower part of the screen structure.
The position of the insulators with respect to the conductors 51 and
52 is fixed by metal rings 72 welded, for example, to the conductors. The degree of protection, relative to the heat radiated by the lower surface of the part 40 of the cathode, is further increased by the presence of discs 73 and 74, arranged transversely with respect to the axis of the tube and which are supported by a metal rod77.
Metal eyelets 79 serve to firmly connect the latter to the protective discs and its upper end constitutes a support for the central part of the filament 46. With the device described, the entire protective structure is maintained at the potential of the central point of the filament. .
In a tube of the type in question, it is desirable that the space between the active surface of the part 40 of the cathode and the grid structure remains constant regardless of the thermal expansion which inevitably accompanies the heating of the cathode, between the temperature ambient and emission. This particularity is very important in the case of using the tube at high frequency, where any variation in the distance between the main electrodes causes appreciable changes in the capacitance between electrodes and consequently changes in the operating characteristics of the tube. In order to ensure the constancy of this distance, the cathode

periphery and cylinder 41.
As can be seen in Figure 3, the support elements 90 are not oriented radially, but tangent to the periphery of the cathode 40. To make this arrangement possible, the end of each of these supports, directed towards the interior, is curved so as to ensure good contact with the edge of said cathode 40 and can be welded to it. The outer end of each element passes through a slot 93 made in the edge of cylinder 41 and it is welded to the outer face of said cylinder as seen at 94 (FIG. 4). It follows from the arrangement of the elements, indicated in FIG. 3, that any expansion of the elements 90 is composed by a rotation in the sinistrorsum direction of the cathode disc 40, in its plane. In

ber in vertical planes, and any vertical displacement of the cathode 4C is impossible. The fact that the support elements 90 have an appreciable width in the vertical direction, gives them a certain rigidity in this direction, and reduces any possibility of bending. At the same time, their relative thinness prevents them from constituting thermal conductors which could lead to an appreciable quantity
