<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Device for the protection of automatic circuit breakers and particularly of relays."
To protect against the occurrence of inadmissible overloads or short circuits and against subsequent damage to the contacts or the entire device, an arrangement has been created for the relays which, at the time of the short circuit , introduces a circuit breaker in the circuit. This again interrupts the short-circuiting current before the main contacts of the relay open. The short circuit must, however, be replaced after the short circuit.
The present invention brings a new improvement of this arrangement, the circuit breaker being replaced by a resistance of short duration, susceptible to being loaded, and having a large coefficient.

temperature. The duration of the resistance load is given by the difference between the tripping times of the auxiliary contact controlled by the overload relay, of the current and of the relay stopping electromagnet. According to the invention, this charging duration therefore depends on the properties of the electromagnet at maximum intensity and of the stop magnet of the relay.
We can, on this occasion, take advantage of the same limiting resistor contactors for the / very wide limits of tripping times, and this as a result of its favorable limiting characteristic, which is shown in figure 1. By heating the resistance, its temperature increases along curve t, while at the same time the current decreases along curve i. The decrease in current is first very strong. However, in the end, she becomes almost insensitive. The current is then roughly constant, until it finally reaches the conductor's melting temperature.
The current limitation is therefore done mainly during the time t1 Thus, if the duration of the trip of the stop magnet is between the limits t1 to t2 'the limited current remains approximately constant, since a narrow current interval corresponds to the relatively wide time interval.
The time t2 must then be chosen, with some certainty, less than the melting time t3.
FIG. 2 schematically shows the device according to the invention, this device also being able to be used advantageously as a resistance switch.
The movable contact C1 'which is controlled by the armature K of the stopping electromagnet of the relay, is located on the fixed intermediate contact C2' which is, on the other hand, @

in contact with the spring contact D. The contact D is connected to the core M of the overcurrent electromagnet E, which is inserted in the circuit of the variable resistor R (preferably made of iron or tungsten). The auxiliary contacts z1, z2 'controlled by this electromagnet are used to interrupt the circuit W of the stop magnet.
Resistance R is calculated so that, on the one hand, when cold, when opening contacts C2-D, even in the case of the greatest short-circuit that can occur, no arc occurs, and that on the other hand, by its increase in resistance over time, which is necessary to trigger the main contacts C1-C2 of the relay, the short-circuit current is limited to a value which can be overcome with certainty by these contacts. C-C contacts thus interrupt the residual current or a current for which they are dimensioned.
When, for example, these contacts can interrupt the current 500 with certainty and without damage, the limiting resistor must be such that the current limited by it drops, during the tripping time of the stop electromagnet up to this value.
According to the invention, the component elements C2 ′ D, M, E can be arranged in the form of an independent device with an insertable limiting resistor R, which is shown in FIG. 3.
