"PERFECTIONNEMENTS AUX CUVES DE. FERMENTATION NOTAMMENT
EMI1.1
Elles donnent lieu
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
' bord externe de.
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>
<Desc/Clms Page number 14>
celles montrées à la fig. 1.
<Desc/Clms Page number 15>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO FERMENTATION VESSELS IN PARTICULAR
EMI1.1
FOR THE OBTAINING OF COMBUSTIBLE GAS ", It has been known for a very long time that fermentation in a-
EMI1.2
Bringing air from waste peiiqlosîqaes, manure and other organic matter, produces a gas evolution containing a very high proportion of methane. Attempts have been made to use these phenomena with a view to the production of combustible gas by means of appropriate fermentation vats.
.However, the constructions recommended to date for such tanks have not given satisfaction. They give rise
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
to significant gas leaks, which considerably lowers their efficiency. On the other hand, the accessory devices with which they are fitted, in particular with a view to causing the automatic circulation of the liquid in which the fermentation materials bathe in order to accelerate the latter, hamper access to the interior of the tank, access which is however essential for the loading of the material to be fermented and the removal of the fermentation residue.
The invention aims to remedy the above drawbacks and to make it possible to produce a tank in which all of the gas produced can be collected, and which can be freely accessed when necessary.
The tank according to the invention is particularly remarkable in that it comprises a removable bell with a lower edge which is constantly immersed in the liquid, with a view to collecting the gas.
The bell in question can easily be made of metal which is rigorously impermeable to methane, which eliminates the leaks of known constructions in which the gas remains in contact with masonry walls which can never be sealed by. despite the coatings with which they are coated. Thanks to its removable nature, it allows free access to the tank when it has been removed from the upper part of the latter.
A particularly interesting arrangement consists in resting the bell by its lower edge on a rim provided on the walls of the opening. This rim returns the gas bubbles which rise along the walls to the bell and therefore prevents them from escaping between the masonry and the side walls of the bell.
When you want to adapt a liquid circulation mechanism to the tank ,,,, the gas is allowed to accumulate under the bell ,,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
, which drives out the liquid and raises the level in the tank, and the gas thus collected is automatically evacuated when the volume of this gas reaches a certain value, with a view to de-causing the sudden return under the bell of the liquid expelled from it by the accumulated gas,
It is obviously necessary to provide means by
EMI3.1
to ensure this automatic gas evaouation.
These means can in particular.être hydraulic and be constituted by combinations.appropriées siphons, a particular arrangement. : interesting then consists in arranging the key so that it caps a circular vertical rim integral with an annular partition disposed in a removable manner inside the tank so as to return the gas bubbles which it receives to the bell.
This partition carries all the mechanism ensuring the abrupt evacuation of the gas and the circulation of the liquid, in such a way that when it is removed from the tank, the latter, '' is entirely free of any device. accessory. and perfectly accessible, while the

Fig. 7 is a general vertical section of the fifth embodiment. , /
It will be assumed in what follows that the fermentation envisaged is that of manure of all kinds and of cellulosic waste with a view to the production of methane.
In the following embodiment 1 to 3, the installation comprises a tank 1, made of cement and buried in such a way as to be protected against cooling. This tank has at mid-height a rim 2, which is extended upwards by a vertical wall 3, parallel to the wall of the tank, but disposed at a certain distance therefrom. The wall 3 thus determines between it and the walls of the tank an intermediate space 4. The cross section of the tank is rectangular, as can be seen in FIG. 2. In this space 4 is engaged the side wall of a bell 5. This bell, the lower edge of which is constantly submerged, is removably fixed by means not detailed.
It can, for example, rest on supports 6 and be loaded with sufficient weight, or even be locked to fixing devices 7 fixed to the wall of the tank. This bell is dimensioned and arranged in such a way as to collect substantially all of the gases resulting from the fermentation.
The top of the tank communicates by a side channel 11 with a sump 12 in which there is a float 13 com-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
setting a switch 14 which in turn controls an electromagnetic valve 15 inserted on a gas pipe 16, which opens under the bell 5, above the deflector 8 and passes from below the lower edge of the bell, as shown in fig. 1. The float is arranged so as to control the opening of the valve 15 when the level in the sump 12 has reached a certain height but to close it only when the level in said sump s 'is significantly lowered.
The operation is as follows:
With the tank open, the bell 5 is lifted in the manner of a cover, and the interior can thus be freely accessed over the entire surface of the. tank without being hampered by any organ. The tank is filled with materials and liquids to be fermented (cellulosic waste, straw, manure, manure, etc.) substantially up to the level of the upper edge of the wall 3. The .cloche is replaced. 5 taking care to let the air escape by a member 5a which is then closed in a sealed manner. Then we close the tank with a plate
17 not waterproof, in insulating cement, fiber cement or other, covered with an insulating layer 18.
We have thus reconstituted a sort of artificial marsh in a vacuum.
The valve 15 being closed, the gases produced by the fermentation accumulate under the bell 5 and discharge the liquid whose level rises above the bell and into the sump.
12 until it reaches the height for which the device 13-14 has been adjusted. At this time the valve 15 opens and the fermentation gases are expelled through the line 16, for example to a gasometer accumulating them under very low pressure. The pumped liquid returns at high speed under the
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
bell through the holes 9 which were used for its repression.
The section of these holes being clearly insufficient for this rapid return, the pressure drop reaches a value such that the greater part of the liquid rises between the wall 3 and the wall of the bell and comes out under the deflector 8 at the bottom. -above the level that has to. this moment the liquid under the, bell. This deflector thus spreads this part of the sheet liquid in the free space under the bell, thus ensuring the desired sprinkling and vigorous brazing. The part of the liquid which returns through the holes 9 causes violent currents at the bottom of the tank which stir up the sludge and other deposits.
Once the level under the bell has risen sufficiently, the valve 15 closes and the phenomena begin again.
It may be advantageous in certain cases to heat the liquid - in the tank. This can be obtained in particular by an electric resistance, by a circulation of hot water with thermosiphon comprising a coil in the tank and a coil, heated for example, by a methane burner, etc. can also bury the tank in manure or other organic mass fermenting in the open air in oxidative fermentation, accelerated or not. This manure can moreover, after having thus provided the heating, be loaded into the tank in order to undergo useful anaerobic fermentation.
The prior oxidative fermentation that this manure-will have undergone will also prevent unwanted parasitic fermentation, such as fermentations. butyric or putrid likely to interfere with methane fermentation.
Of course, the operation of the valve 15 can be ensured automatically by any mechanism other than that
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
represented and more particularly by a system of electrodes which the liquid short-circuits while rising in the sump
12.
In a variant of this installation, the tank, the bell and the partition 3 could be of circular section. The space 4 and the deflector 8 would then be annular.
The embodiment according to FIG. 4 has substantially the same general characteristics except on two points:
First of all the holes 9 of FIG. 2 and 3, intended to ensure communication between the bottom of the tank 2 and the upper part of the latter which is isolated therefrom by the removable bell ,.
5, the lower edge of which is constantly submerged, are here deleted and replaced by an external pipe 19 opening very high, under the cover 17-18. This pipe can no longer ensure that the liquid rises under the action of the pressure of the gases, but not its descent, since it is not flooded at its outlet. As in the previous example, the bell 5 is dimensioned and arranged so as to collect substantially all of the gases produced.
Secondly, the gas exhaust is controlled no longer by an automatic mechanism depending on the level outside the bell, but by a magnetic device comprising a small external auxiliary bell.
20 under which opens the pipe 16 which passes under the lower edge of la'eloche 5 and opens the pipe 21 going to the gas meter or other reservoir. Line 16 is arranged in a U-tube shape as shown.
The liquid filling of the tank must here reach a level higher than that of the top of the bell 5 (said
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
bell being completely filled with liquid). The gas exhaust pipe 16 is therefore flooded. The gases accumulate under the bell, forcing the liquid which rises through the outer pipe 19 and falls back into the space above the bell. At the same time the level drops in the descending vertical part of the pipe 16 which forms the gauge. When the level reaches the lower bend of said pipe, the gas can escape freely by discharging into the pit 22 of the auxiliary bell 20 the remainder of the liquid which still obstructed the pipe 16.
The gas pressure suddenly ceasing, the liquid accumulated above the bell 5 returns under it, expelling the gases and gushing out in a sheet under the deflector 8.
Around the. At the end of this liquid return, the inlet of the pipe 16 is flooded and the phenomena begin again.
Instead of opening the external pipe 19 well above the maximum level of the liquid in the tank, this outlet can be situated between the minimum and maximum levels.
When the liquid returns, part of it goes down through said pipe 19, causing vigorous stirring at the bottom of the tank ,, which is favorable to the smooth running of the fermentation; nevertheless, a significant part of the liquid spurts out under the bell (tomme above-exposed.
The wall of the pipe 16 is pierced with a calibrated hole 16a opening at the level of the. lower part of pit 22. This hole fulfills two functions:
1 During the period of slow delivery of the liquid by the gas in line 16, it limits the delivery pressure to that corresponding to the height difference
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
between the level of the pit 22 and the level of the liquid in the descending branch of the pipe 16, that is to say that it cancels in some way the hydraulic effect of the upper part of said pipe above. above the liquid in the tank 22. This avoids any excess, untimely pressure.
2 After evacuating the gas from bell 5, this hole
16a ensures the positive filling of the pipe 16 with liquid, the level in the rising branch being exactly equal to that of the pit 22, even if gas bubbles remain trapped in the pipe. This filling through the orifice
16a is made from the liquid of the pit and thus compehse ,, the quantity of liquid released into it by the gas during each operating cycle from the pipe, 16.
In, the embodiment of FIG. 5 we find the same .elements'; than. in . that of fig. 4, but the constructive arrangement is-such that the set of devices constitutes an easily removable block of a cement tank having no annular chamber or external duct of delicate execution for. an entrepreneur ?, not a specialist.
The removable bell 5, the lower edge of which is constantly immersed, is of relatively small dimensions. Its dimensions and arrangement are, however, such that it substantially collects. all the gases that form. This bell covers a circular vertical rim 3a integral with an annular partition 23 resting horizontally on a rim
24 integral with the walls of the tank 1. The outer edge of the partition 23 is raised and rises to the top of the tank 1 where this partition is removably fixed by devices
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
not shown, such as lag screws, pins, bolts, etc ... preventing the partition 23 from being lifted by the. pressure of the liquid if its own weight is insufficient.
This partition 23 is not flat, but takes the form of a concave surface with a concavity facing downwards; the partition 23 with its raised edge thus constitutes a sort of annular bowl with a domed bottom. The bell 5 is on its side fixed to the. partition 23 by any suitable means, for example by a bayonet device 7 '.
The auxiliary bell 20 of the device causing the automatic evacuation of the gas is housed in a sort of tarpaulin 25 integral with the partition 23 'and placed between the bell 5 and the outer edge of said partition. This tarpaulin takes the place of the pit 22 of FIG. 4. The gas outlet pipe 21 rises directly from the top of the auxiliary bell 20 through the cover 17 of the vessel 1. The connecting pipe 16 is thus extremely short.
The outer pipe 19 of FIG. 4 is here replaced by a dip tube 19 'passing through the partition 23 through a kind of stuffing box 26.
The operation remains the same as above with reference, in FIG. 4, but this embodiment has the advantage that all of the devices are carried by the annular partition 23. The tank 1 is thus easy to produce, the assembly of the partition and the devices that it is mounted, manufactured and assembled in series at the factory, then being put in place without any adjustment, without any complications. It will be noted that the gas bubbles which rise along the walls of the tank and which could pass between them and the
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
'outer edge of.
the partition 23, are deflected by the rim 24 ... and returned under the concave lower face of the partition 23 -'which brings them to the bell 5 ... The construction described still has the advantage.that-for the filling the tank can be done by removing the partition. 23, freely access all the internal space without having to take any precaution to avoid pouring solid matter into any annular space. contrary to the case of forms of; previous achievements.
The installation according to fig. 5 comprises a heating coil 27, said coil being supplied with hot water (or possibly with steam) by a small auxiliary boiler. Said auxiliary boiler comprises a body 28a with a smoke outlet tube 28 ± passing therethrough at right angles, an arrangement which considerably increases the heating surfaces without control. besides measuring the construction. The fireplace can be solid fuel or include methane burners.
A compressor 29 allows, by pipes 32, 34-and
35, the following operations:
1 To accelerate the circulation by liquid delivery (pulsed circulation), the compressor 29 can, through the pipe 32, suck methane into the gasometer 33 in which this gas is accumulated and deliver it under the bell 5 through the pipe 34. Everything then takes place as if the release of gas under the bell 5 were intensified and the pulsations of. liquid circulation are faster.
2 The compressor, sucking methane either by the or by the pipe 34, pipe 32 can return it to the bottom of the tank through the pipe 35 and inject it into this tank through the perforated tube 36. A kind of paddling that brews
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
the mass of the fermenting liquid with the solids it contains.
The gas discharged to the perforated tube 36 can be passed through a coil 37 heated by the boiler 28a, so that the gas bubbling in the liquid helps to heat the latter.
The embodiment of FIG. 6 differs from that of FIG. 5 in that at the upper part of the vessel is disposed a movable gasometric bell 38, covering the raised outer edge of the partition 23 and which directly collects not only the gas which escapes from the pipe 16, but also the gas bubbles which emerge from the liquid located above the partition 23 and in the pipe 19 '.
The auxiliary bell 20 of FIG. 5 is deleted, the gas rising directly into the gasometric bell 38. The pipe.
Gas intake 39 engages in the annular space between the wall of said bell and the raised outer edge of the partition 23; it descends and passes through the wall of the tank 1. In this way the opening of the tank is obtained by directly removing the. gasometric bell 38 and the partition 23 without being hampered by any piping.
Of course, the installation can include all devices for heating and circulating gas of the type mentioned with regard to the previous embodiments.
In figs 5 and 6, in a, b, and a ', b', the extreme levels in the two compartments determined by the fixed bell 5, the lower edge of which is constantly submerged, have been indicated.
In the installations according to fig. 5 and 6 the automatic gas evacuation takes place in the same way as in the installation of fig. 4.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
It is advantageous to inoculate the liquid used in the installations described by means of suitable bacteria in order to
EMI13.1
than fermentation. methane "begins as quickly as possible This seeding, together with the possibility of maintaining the mass at the desired temperature and with constant stirring, makes it possible to considerably reduce the time required for setting up. operation of a tank, the output of these installations is thus significantly increased.
Fig. 7 indicates an extremely simplified construction in which no device for circulating liquid is provided and yet giving an acceptable yield, if care is taken to inoculate and reheat it.
The body 1 of the tank rests on a layer 50 of insulating concrete protecting the bottom against cooling from the ground. Heat and cold insulating concretes are well known in the art and it is unnecessary to recall here the various compositions they may have. Concrete can also be replaced by any other material suitable for the constitution of said layer.
The tank has a rim 24, protruding on its walls towards the top thereof, the said rim having in section an oblique lower side and a substantially horizontal upper side on which rests a metal bell 5 pre - sight to engage. in the bowl with sufficient play to allow easy placement and removal. This bell
5 is retained against the vertical thrust of the liquid by keys 7 threaded through practical holes in the walls of the body 1, said keys being similar to
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
those shown in fig. 1.
The tank also comprises a gas intake tube 16, the entry of which under the bell 5 is protected by a flap 51 against the floating solid masses which could possibly risk clogging it.
To use this tank, the bell 5 is first removed, then manure or other easily fermentable organic matter is loaded approximately up to the level of rim 24, the mass thus loaded is inoculated with appropriate cultures, then place the bell 5 which is locked by the keys 7. The filling is then completed with liquid until the level visible in the clearance existing between the walls of the tank and those of the body come a short vertical distance below the bottom of the latter.
Unfermented manure is then piled around and on the tank so as to form a sort of insulating and heating layer 52.
After a very short time, gas is produced which, initially charged with carbon dioxide, very quickly becomes combustible, its methane content increasing rapidly. It is then usable and the tank can be put into service. If the temperature and seeding conditions are favorable, the production of combustible gas can begin approximately twenty-four hours after loading. It should be noted in this regard that it is always possible to de-heat the liquid which is introduced into the. tank when filling. ,
It is important to note that the gas is never retained by the cement walls, which are always permeable to methane despite their apparent watertightness.
Indeed:
<Desc / Clms Page number 15>
gaseous bubbles produced in the mass in fermentation rise and burst directly under the bell 5 in a space limited by walls, metal and a liquid surface, therefore perfectly sealed for the gas. The bubbles which rise the along the walls of the body 1 meet the flange 24 which forms a deflection
EMI15.1
tor and return them under the bell. They cannot therefore escape ¯ through the clearance between said walls and the bell.
Note again that the bell 5 forms a cover and dispenses with any covering slab. In practice, the gas produced is stored in a gasometer under a certain pressure. level under the bell 5) is. therefore always a little lower than in the surrounding space
EMI15.2
this, which does not preaënte''moreover any inconvenience, this slight difference not being able in practice to overflow du'liquide.
It must also be understood that the foregoing description has been given only by way of example and that it in no way limits the field of the invention, which would not be departed from by replacing the execution details described by all other equivalents.
