<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
sium".

Magnesium-based alloys
The present invention relates to magnesium based alloys and sets out to provide an improved magnesium based alloy comprising lithium as an essential component, along with one or more other alloy metals. More particularly, the present invention provides an alloy comprising magnesium as the main constituent, from about 1 to 13% lithium, and one or more metals, as described below, which modify and improve the physical characteristics of the alloy based on magnesium and lithium.
The alloys of the present invention are characterized by their low specific weight, good ductility, high tensile strength, and good mechanical properties. Many of these alloys have excellent resistance to permanent set under repeated stress, good stability of their tensile strength at room temperature, and some of them are susceptible to heat treatment.
The present invention provides various alloys of magnesium and lithium containing other useful metals so as to provide ternary, quaternary, and quinquennial alloys having important physical properties,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The metals whose incorporation into the basic magnesium-lithium structure is advantageous, as has been confirmed by experience, are as follows: aluminum, antimony, barium, beryllium, bismuth, cadmium, cerium, calcium, chromium , copper, indium, lead, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, silicon, silver, strontium, tantalum, thallium, tin, titanium, vanadium and zinc.
The novel alloys of the present invention can be prepared by any common smelting process, taking precautions to avoid excessive sodium contamination. Thus we can melt the magnesium in an iron crucible under a suitable flux, then add the metal or useful metals, and finally lithium. to avoid excessive oxidation of lithium during the alloying process, it is good to employ a device to keep the low density lithium below the surface of the molten metal. One can use for this purpose an inverted perforated steel cup, such as a phosphor cup, or other suitable like device.
The alloying operations can be carried out at temperatures of the order of approximately 705 to 760 C. After careful stirring so as to ensure the homogeneity of the molten product, the latter is allowed to stand at sufficient temperatures. to keep it in a liquid state, then it is decanted into molds. A temperature of about 715 C is suitable for molding.
The alloy can be poured directly into final molds, without the need to proceed in a neutral or reducing atmosphere. to ensure the absence of harmful amounts of sodium or potassium, it is preferable to prepare these alloys according to the technique described in the Belgian patent application filed by the same applicant on June 17, 1946 and entitled "Process for the treatment of magnesium alloys
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
sium ". According to this process, a flux consisting of 1 part lithium fluoride and 3 parts lithium chloride can be used. The use of this flux reduces the sodium and sodium content of the alloy. potassium.
The alloy can also be treated by blowing a gas such as nitrogen or ammonia into the molten product, which will reduce the amount of sodium or potassium.
To clarify the lightness of these alloys, it should be noted that many of them are lighter than magnesium, their specific gravity being close to 1.55.
The table below indicates some examples of alloys to illustrate the present invention, together with some of their physical properties.
