Taa cage? is supported by the wall of the outer casing at the GOY0n of six radial baffles which are uniformly spaced apart 4 extending over the entire height of the belt and subdividing the space nnu1.pirr:> between the latter and the wall of the envelope in six vertical compartments in the form of sectors 5.

The lower extr0itrs of the wires are joined in another ring 7b of insulating material, at the base of the cage. On each of the 181'1'es 7 is a movable contact 8: '' ont4 on an internal cylindrical baffle 9 and rotating with this baffle, which is supported by a rotating base 10 which fits inside. of the lower end of the casing 1 with a clearance allowing it to function

The baffle is provided with a longitudinal opening 11 whose width corresponds. has the width of the internal ends of the sector-shaped compartments 5, and which is liable to coincide with each of these successive compartments.

circumference to form a rim 12a which fits intimately on the upper edge of the cage 2, the remaining part of the plate 12 constituting an upper closure in the form of a sector 13 of desired dimensions to simultaneously close the upper ends of two of the vertical compartments 5.
The base plate 10 comprises a disc mounted in close proximity to the lower ends of the radial support baffles 4 and provided with an orifice 14 capable of coinciding with the lower end of the same vertical compartment as that with which the longitudinal opening 11 of the internal chicane coincides at the time considered. At the same time, the upper end of this compartment is closed by the upper closure 13.
A discharge duct 15 descending to the plate 12 or just below, is mounted vertically above the internal baffle 9 and in the axis of the latter. A main vacuum fan 16 is mounted inside this duct or is connected to it. The top of the casing 1 is closed by an annular cover plate 17. An opening made in the wall of the casing below the cover 17 is connected to a subsidiary exhaust fan 18. Holes 19 established on the periphery of the casing. the lower end of the casing, at least one per vertical compartment 5, constitute air inlets, as will be described more fully below.
On the underside of the base plate 10 is formed a bulge on which is mounted a gear 20 actuated for example by an electric motor (not shown).
The device works as follows:
The fans 16, 18 are turned on and the internal baffle 9 is rotated uniformly in the direction of the arrow (fig. 2); the air enters the casing 1 through the opening 14 of the base plate 10 and the openings 19 of the lower part of the wall of the casing. As the orifice 14 and the longitudinal groove 11 of the internal baffle 9 open into the same vertical compartment 5, the suction of the main fan 16 causes a call for air from the surrounding atmosphere in this compartmenta through silica gel or other absorbent material 3 which absorbs moisture, and then from bottom to top inside the. baffle 9 and through the discharge duct 15 to the container or the warehouse to be ventilated.
As the air passes through the gel 3, the latter becomes charged with humidity and becomes less efficient, and the speed of rotation of the baffle 9 is determined in such a way that before this state is reached in a any zone of the gel wall the suction of the main fan is interrupted in the compartment where this zone pa is located. r the rotary baffle. At the same time, the circuit of the heating resistors 6 embedded in the gel of this compartment closes and the drying and regeneration operation begins.
The chicane 9 continuing to turn, the. upper closure 13 uncovers the upper end of compartment 5 and at the same time the circuit of heating resistors corresponding to this compartment opens, after which this compartment is subjected to the suction of the subsidiary fan 18 and air is drawn in through the openings $ 19 and on the outer surface of the. wall of gel to cool it and carry away any water vapor generated by the heating resistors 6.
It is
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
important to note flood during this cooling period, yes in the example of apparatus which has just been described extends
EMI4.1
during two-thirds of a cycle, the cooling air is not sucked through the gel which, consequently, is dry when it is then subjected to the suction of the main fan.

pal 16. The resistors of cm Dffage 6 can be switched off at a suitable point in the cycle, by appropriately modifying the arrangement of the movable contacts.
In the form of construction shown in fig. 7, the wires of the heating resistors embedded in the wall, in

Absorbent materials are omitted and the drying or "r! g" \ nr- ration or both simultaneous operations are carried out by means of a radiant heater 6 'mounted on the outer surface of the internal rotating baffle 9 '.

and 2 and it is provided with three partitions 9a, 9h, 9c extending stinging outward or starting from its external surface to end close to the internal surface 9h of the cage 2. The partitions 9a, 9b are diotr? Le0nt ornos7es and d <lildtent joint'lent with 18 wall 3b of the cage and that of the baffle 9 ', a sewi-annular compartment 1¯1 extending from bottom to top over the entire height of the cage. The third partition r2ai "'the 9c is' hummed close to the wall 9b and has a c # npArttent for the radiant heater 6'. The latter is turned around the rip 1- surface. of the internal chicane and is s, lpfr ". by a layer of insulating material. At the top edge of 1? internal baffle is fixed a cover plate 15 'likely r1 close the space between this edge and the upper edge of the cage? The casing 1 is ":; 21p- ment iron., It is at its top by an annular cover and is provided with an opening for receiving a connector connected to an exhaust fan.
When a device of this type is in use,
EMI4.5
air is sucked inside baffle 9 'of the sei-nnulRirp compartment. There, it can enter by passing naked through the soil, where the total amount of absorbed matter is lost. When naked, the baffle turns, the heating device

6 'which is mounted therein is? ,, ené next to successive sections of the wall of absorbent material which are thereby heated and dried and / or rfr; r5néré, cooling air' '' '' as sucked by the fan 18 as above.
In order to ensure the call of a sufficient volume of cooling air on the external surface of the third absorbent, the cover 17 'is extended r8d.irle "outwardly on 18 half of its circumference, this rui corresponds to the tightness of the co "'p8.rti .lent se.ni-annular lli, so as to 8P1 prevent the air from being sucked in by the fan from the bottom up on the outer surface the area of the continuous wall of absorbent material through which the air to be dried is drawn in by the main discharge fan.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
In the two construction methods described above, the. cage 2, which contains the absorbent material, instead of the internal baffle. It is also possible to reverse the flow of air which can be drawn in from the inside through the wall of absorbent material and from the bottom up through the annular space between the cage and the casing. In this case, the internal baffle 9 or 9 'can be shown on the outside of the cage, and the holes 19 made at the base of the casing can be omitted.
If necessary, a heater other than electric can be used. For example, steam or gas heating can be used.
In the form of construction of the apparatus shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the air circulates in the opposite direction, i.e. due to the humid air will arrive inside the cage 2 and is sucked in by the main fan. In this mode of construction, there is no baffle 9 or 9 'as in figs. 1 to 3 and it is cage 2 itself which rotates. The cage 2 is carried by upper and lower discs or wheels 21, 22 which are keyed to the main vertical shaft 23, 1a. upper wheel 21 being provided with spokes to allow air to pass through, while lower wheel 22 is in the form of a solid disc and constitutes a closure plate or bottom for cage 2.
Rotational motion is transmitted to the main shaft 23 by an endless screw and helical wheel 20 operated by any suitable power source (not shown).
The cage 2 is enclosed in a cylindrical sheet metal casing 1 ', the interior of which is subdivided by partitions 4' into three partially annular compartments 34, 25, 26, the internal walls of which are formed by a zone of the. gel wall 3 and the cage 2. The casing is provided with an upper bottom and a lower bottom formed by the closing planes 1a and 1b respectively. The partitions 4 'of the compartment 24 which constitutes the desiccation chamber are lined on their inwardly facing surfaces with a material which is a poor conductor of heat 27, or else this material may, if it is sufficiently rigid, constitute. itself the 4 'partitions.
An electric radiant heater 28 supported by a liner of insulating material 29 is mounted between the upper annular bottom 1a and the lower annular bottom 1b at a distance from the outer surface 2a of the cage. A layer 30 of similar insulating material is also placed on top of the drying chamber 24.
A central vertical orifice 71 formed in the insulating liner 29 provides communication between the internal and external parts of the drying chamber, and a vapor collecting chamber 32 from which leaves a vapor discharge duct 33 from which the the other end is connected to the cold air exhaust duct 35 on the side of the inlet of the subsidiary suction fan '(not shown), is fixed to the casing opposite the outer end of this orifice 31. A valve. 54 regulates the flow in duct 33.
The cooling air suction duct opens at its inner end into the cooling chamber 25 which extends from one of the side walls of the desiccant chamber 24 at a point diametrically opposite from the side. other side wall of the latter. The third compartment 26 constitutes the collecting chamber of dry air, hence the duct. dry air exhaust 36 leads to the inlet of the main exhaust fan (not shown).

These are combined to form a common outlet duct leading to the inlet of the subsidiary suction fan (not shown). '
In service, cage 2 turns slowly on the nbr
43 in the direction of arrow R (Fig. '7) and the fans suck the air from the inlet 37 inside the compartments
24a, 25a, 26a.
The air entering the compartment 26a is sucked by the main fan through the adjacent area of the gel wall 3 inside the outer compartment 36 and from there through the dry air exhaust duct 36 to be discharged into the chamber to be ventilated. Lorsoue one of the areas of the. gel wall 3 is loaded with absorbed moisture it passes between the wall 9b and the corresponding outer wall 4 and is exposed to the heat of the radiant heater 28 in the drying compartment 24.
At the same time, the air from the inlet 37 is sucked along the internal compartment 24a by the subsidiary fan and passes through the gel, inside the vapor discharge duct 34 carrying with it the vapor. expelled from the charged gel by the heater.
By continuing to rotate, cage 2 brings the zone of dry gel beyond the partition 9c. The air is then sucked from the inlet 37 by the subsidiary fan, along the internal compartment 25a through the gel, inside the cold air compartment 25, thereby cooling the dry gel, and passes from there to the outside through the cooling air discharge duct 35 and the subsidiary fan.
In the variant shown in FIG. 8, part of the dehydrated air stream is used to cool and dry the loaded gel. The casing 1 is divided horizontally by partitions 4a, 4b, which are located in the horizontal plane which encloses the axis of the fixed shaft 43, on which the cage 2 rotates in the direction of the arrow R. The air humid is admitted to the upper part of the casing 1 by the humid air inlet 37 and passes through the area of the gel wall 3 which is located in the upper half of the cage 2 inside that -this.
The internal baffle 9 'has the shape of a keyed sector on the shaft 43 and provided with four equally spaced baffles 91, 92, 93, 94 extending outwardly from this sector to the inside of the clearance provided for operation. to the internal surface 2b of the cage 2. The end baffle 91 is horizontal and ends opposite the partition 4 from the inside of the casing, while the other baffle 94 is vertical.
The dehydrated air inside the cage 2 is exhausted by means of the main suction fan (not shown) through the part of the gel wall which is between the baffle 94 and the wall 4b located on the side. inside the casing, the mass of air (indicated by arrows A) being sent through the main outlet 36 to a refrigerator, if necessary, to be discharged into the chamber to be ventilated.
Part of the dehydrated air (shown by arrows B) can, however, be diverted by a valve 45 mounted horizontally in a passage between the casing 1 and a vertical baffle.
46 extending over the entire length of the casing. A pair of horizontal baffles 47 connect the upper end of baffle 46 to. the lower end of a similar vertical baffle 48, the upper end of which is close to the. outer surface 2a of the cage. Below the horizontal baffles 47 is mounted an air heater coil 49 through which the diverted dehydrated air B can circulate.
At the outlet end of the air heater coil is a curved baffle 50 which rises from the base of the casing towards the cage to meet a second curved baffle 51 concentric with -
