<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Cette disposition telle qu'elle est décrite ci-dessus possède de nombreux avantages qui tous contribuent à accélérer à et simplifier le montage. Ainsi, par exemple, l'ensemble constitué par la boite de cames et les éléments du moteur qui la surmontent -peut' être monté à part pour former un groupement indépendant, puis simplement abaissé jusqu'à la position de tra- vail qu'il doit occuper entre les rangées des cylindres A. Dans le montage de détail) les paliers de l'arbre à cames et les sièges recevant les paliers de l'arbre des culbuteurs sont obtenus en perforant en droite ligne ou par des opérations équivalentes effectuées à travers les goussets transversaux 3 de la botte de cames;

Device for mounting the camshaft in an internal combustion engine.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines and relates in particular to the mounting of the camshaft and its associated parts relative to the crankcase.
It has been common practice up to now to place the camshaft µ in an extension of the crankcase.
This required a specialized manpower for the assembly, given the machining operations required and the need for the precise alignment of a large number of cooperating members.
The object of the invention is to simplify the general construction of the engine, to speed up its assembly and to make the camshaft and the components which operate in combination with it more easily accessible than in previous constructions.
According to the invention, the device for mounting the camshaft of an internal combustion engine comprises a cam set formed as a separate element and providing the bearings in which the camshaft rotates and -the rocker arm shaft, these two shafts extending throughout the length of this cam box which is provided with a cover intended to support a fuel supply pump as well as other elements, in such a manner that the assembly can be fitted in place on the engine crankcase and fixed to this crankcase.

The construction shown is a preferred application to internal combustion engines of the type comprising two rows or rows of cylinders A arranged in a V-shape on a common crankcase B. the space between the two rows of cylinders is used for mounting a cam box which includes a closed box 1 provided with a removable cover 2 and measuring a length considerably greater than its height or its width. The interior of this cam box comprises a certain number of diaphragms or transverse gussets 3 as well as the camshaft 4, the rocker arm shaft 5 and the cam rocker arms 6 which are all mounted on the side. 'inside this cam box before it is placed in its operating position between the cylinder blocks.
Below the closed safe 1 there is a support infrastructure integral with it and constituted by a hollow box-sectioned meabrure 7 with a base and perforated walls (as shown in Figs. 3 and 5), the base resting on one side. horizontal junction 8 formed on the upper central part of the crankcase B of the engine. The cam box is intended to be fixed in this position by means of elongated bolts 9 which pass right through the cover 2, the box 1 and the support infrastructure 2 and which engage in the hollows made. in the upper part of the crankcase.
The camshaft 4 is provided with bosses 10 supported in bearings formed by holes in the gussets 3 which also support the bearings 11 of the rocker shaft 5. The gussets 3 are also pierced with holes 12 (see fig. 4) through which the bolts 9 pass.
The cover 3 of the cam box is fixed in place by means of screws and bolts 13 engaged in recesses
14 made in the trunk 1 See fig. 4), a fluidtight seal being provided between the junction faces of the cover and the box with the interposition of a seal 15. The box 1 is also provided with orifices 16 through which the push rods 17 pass. having the role of transmitting the movements of the rocker arms' of cams µ to the rocker arms of the valves. which are housed in the cylinder heads of the cylinders.
The 4 camshaft 4. is provided at one end with a pinion 18 through which the command is transmitted from a gear actuated by the crankshaft, this pinion
18 being housed in a cover 19 bolted at 20 to the end of the box 1 and of the cover 3 and connected at its lower part to the end flange of the crankcase. The opposite end of the camshaft carries an angle pinion 21 through which the mechanism of a governor is driven. This mechanism is supported by a cup 23 which surrounds the angle pin 21 and is bolted at 24 to the adjacent end of the box 1.
The cover 2 of the oames box is also provided with surfaces 25 (FIG. 3) forming seats on which are supported the fuel supply pumps 26. These pumps are fixed in place by means of bolts 27 implanted in threaded recesses 28 of the cover 2.
Due to its length, the cam box is rationally established in two parts bolted to each other at 29 as shown in fig. 3 and 4, The middle part of the box shaft carries a toothed wheel 30 placed immediately below
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
an orifice 31 made in the cover? and providing passage to a driven pinion 35 meshing with the toothed wheel 30.
. This pinion 35 is mounted on a shaft 36 which controls the fuel pumps 26 and which is housed in a housing 32 mounted on a joining face 33 and fixed in place on it by means of bolts 34. By mounting the regulator and the pumps fuel and their gear actuated on the cover of the cam box in the manner described, this obviates the need to provide special mountings for these elements on the other parts of the casing of the engine or the crankcase. crankshaft.
The camshaft rotates in a lubricant bath contained in the box 1 which) is supplied by grease nipples 37 mounted on the two end bearings of the rocker arm shaft and connected to the engine lubrication system. The rocker shaft is hollow and communicates with the grease nipples 37; this shaft has, from distance to distance in its length, slots which communicate with other slots 38 through which the lubricant is led to the bearings 11 and to the passages 39, which ensures the lubrication of the camshaft bearings.
In the particular construction which is described and shown, the rocker arm shaft is established in two separate sections which are divided by the orifice 31. Likewise the camshaft is established in two sections joined by bolts 40. which simultaneously fix the toothed wheel in place around two flanges integral with the adjacent ends of the sections of the camshaft.
This arrangement as described above possesses numerous advantages which all help to speed up and simplify assembly. Thus, for example, the assembly constituted by the cam box and the engine elements which surmount it can be mounted separately to form an independent grouping, then simply lowered to the working position which it requires. must occupy between the rows of cylinders A. In the detail assembly) the camshaft bearings and the seats receiving the rocker arm shaft bearings are obtained by perforating in a straight line or by equivalent operations carried out through the transverse gussets 3 of the cam boot;
so that no alignment of the bearings by a specialized manpower is necessary since it suffices to mount and fix in place the bearings in the bearings of the rocker arm shaft.
Although the invention has been particularly described. Regarding a V-type engine which can be built according to British Patent No. 560,287 of July 14, 1942 and provided with a crankcase as described in British Patent No. 560,288, it should be understood that the The invention is not limited to these applications but can be adapted to in-line cylinder type engines.
