DESCRIPTIVE MEMORY filed in support of a patent application for Nicolo PENSABENE, "Improvements to magnetic couplings". Priority of a patent application in Great Britain N 12909 filed July 6, 1944,
The present invention relates to magnetic couplings for transmitting the rotational movement of a shaft, of a transmission element, or of a member similar to another and of the type in which the coupling members are designed. - seen from protrusions or magnetized teeth which are placed face to face across a buttress,
so that said coupling members can be completely separated from each other by a thin foil or screen extending through the air gap. This type of coupling is suitable for its application to the drive of machines placed under water, from fully enclosed electric motors, as well as to many other applications in which it is necessary to provide a hermetic envelope for one or each of the machines carrying the shafts, transmission elements, etc., which must be coupled to one another.
The screen placed in the gap between the coupling members allows any or each of said members to be completely enveloped and. avoids the need to resort to, glands or other types of gaskets allowing relative rotation between the hermetic shutters.
The object of the invention is an improved or simplified magnetic coupling of the type mentioned above.
It consists of a coupling of the type specified above in which the coupling members provided with the protrusions or teeth are magnetized by an inductor magnet equipped with one or more stationary magnetizing coils, which makes it possible to dispense with slip rings. According to one embodiment of the invention, the. Coupling members are arranged in an annulairo air gap constita antre 'of the opposite pole faces of a fixed annular magnet.
In another embodiment, the coupling members provided with the magnetized protrusions or teeth are intended to be magnetized by an 'ring magnet which is divided into' two parts, one of which is fixed and carries the excitation winding. , while the other is mounted to rotate with one of the coupling members and twists the protrusions or magnetized teeth of this member.
If desired, a series of coupling members can be arranged, in a number greater than two, so as to constitute a certain number of air gaps arranged in series in the

The invention also applies to couplings "in which permanent magnets are used to magnetize the coupling members, said magnets being equipped with

To better understand the invention, .will now describe by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, three embodiments applied to the drive. a borehole pump -'-- from a fully enclosed electric motor,
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a schematic longitudinal section of a coupling established in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a schematic cross-sectional half-section of this mate.
Figures 3 and 4 are similar views of a modified coupling construction according to the invention,
Figure 5 shows another modification,
Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing show a disc type coupling. F indicates a ring magnet excited by coils C1 and C2. Its magnetic circuit is interrupted by a

air gap which is ocouné by the two organs Ni and N8 ′ of the coupling. One of them, K1, is attached to the shaft N of the electric motor, the other, N2, is attached to the shaft P of the pump.
Each of these members is a non-magnetic disk D to which is attached an iron disk L provided with projecting teeth T (see also figure 2), suitably magnetized by the magnetomotive force acting across the air gap. In this case, the screen is made by a disk S made of a non-magnetic thin sheet material. This material must have a high resistivity in order to decrease the currents of
EMI2.7
x'oueault which are generated ciar.s said material by the rotating flow between the opposing teeth of the two organs.
When this screen is attached, as shown, using a seal: waterproof, it completely surrounds the motor and its bearings. To reduce the overhang of the two half-couplings, the motor and pump naliors, not shown
EMI2.8
s, 'nts in the drawing, can be placed very close to each other.
As an example of a magnet provided with two toothed frames each of which represents one of the coupling members, FIGS. 3 and 4 show the case of a drum-type magnet, in FIG. 3, the magnet N1 is attached to the motor shaft M and is
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
provided with teeth T, on one side, and an air gap G, on the other, In addition to the teeth T, there is another group of teeth Ti, fixed to an iron ring R. This ring R is fixed to the magnet N1 by a disc D made of a non-magnetic material, the second member N2 of the coupling is placed as shown between the two groups of teeth, this member being .fixed to the pump shaft P.
The organ N2. in non-magnetic material, bears the iron band s, in any suitable manner. For example, it can be made of brass or bronze and provided with iron inserts or bands. The magnetic circuit is' completed by a fixed cylinder F supporting the coil C. It can be seen that the flux closes around the coil in. passing through the air gap G, entering the ring R and passing from the teeth T1 to the teeth T through the bands of iron S. The path of the lines of force is indicated by arrows. The screen, made of a thin material, is shown in section by the curve Q and is fixed to the stationary cylinder F, so that it completely envelops the motor, its bearings and the excitation coil.
Each of the faces of this strip facing the teeth is subjected to a tangential tensile force which gives rise to the transmission torque between the two members of the coupling. Figure 4 shows the section of the coupling in the plane AB.
It is clear that the air gap G can be placed in any desired position of the magnetic circuit. Finally. -on, figure 5, there is shown a coupling of the drum type in which the two members rotate between the soft poles of an annular stationary magnet F. The air gap G is placed at the end of the inner cylindrical portion of the magnet, as shown. The advantage of this construction is the provision of a stabilizing bearing supported by the magnet. The other details can be seen from the drawing.
