@
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

ECHINE FOR BINDING SEVERAL PAPER OR SIMILAR WINDOWS AND IN PARTICULAR MACHINE FOR CLOSING THE RESULTING LETTERS, METHODS AND @ PRODUCTS.
It is known practice to bind together several superimposed sheets of paper by passing them between two knurling wheels, driven in a rotational movement and imprinting permanent deformations in said sheets. If we fold, for example in half, a letter and / we pass the free edges through said device, we obtain a closure which is generally satisfactory, but when we want to open the letter, we tear it up according to the lines of deformation, made with the aforementioned apparatus, and forming lines of least resistance, and one encounters difficulties in separating the coupons from the sheet which have been passed under the apparatus and, consequently, remain bound l 'to one another.
@
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention overcomes this drawback and consists in placing next to the wheels currently used another pair of wheels, no longer intended to deform the paper, but to pierce a line of perforations.
Under these conditions, it will suffice to open the letter to tear it along the line of perforations, which presents no difficulty.
By way of example, there is shown in the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1, a letter, closed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2, a diagram of an apparatus according to the present invention.
Figure 3, a section of said apparatus along line III-III of Figure 2.
The apparatus, shown in Figures 2; and 3, consists of a shaft 1, actuated by hand or mechanically, of a secondary shaft 2, two pairs of knurls 3 and 4, keyed on the two shafts 1 and 2 and a table 5 arriving a little below the upper part of the lower rollers and forming a support for the two shafts 1 and 8.
The pair of knurling wheels 3, in itself known, -, prints a line of known permanent deformations in the sheets which, applied to the table 5 against the rim 6, pass between them. This line of deformations is shown at 7 on the letter shown in figure 1.
The pair of knurls 4, the addition of which to the rest of the apparatus, constitutes a part of the present invention, can comprise, as can be seen in figure 3, a spiked wheel and a notched wheel, so that these wheels 3 cut a line of perforations 8 in the letter.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The letter, having passed through the apparatus shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, presents, as can be seen in FIG. 1, along these free edges, first of all a line of deformations 7 and a line of perforations 8.
This letter recalls the letter cards currently in use, on which the glued part would be replaced by the deformation line 7.
Of course, the present invention is not limited to the example described. The shape of the periphery of the wheels 4, shown in FIG. 3, could be replaced by any other shape, capable of cutting out a line of holes in the letter. In the case of Figure 2, the knobs 3 and 4 are contiguous, they could obviously be moved away from each other, if this were necessary. However, in the case of letters, it is advantageous to bring lines 7 and 8 as close as possible, so as to reduce the margin as much as possible.
The present invention is not limited to closing letters. One could, for example, apply it to the constitution of notebooks with strains or without strains. In the case of log books, the pairs of knurls should be spaced apart at a distance corresponding to the size of the stumps. The present invention also covers, as new industrial products, letters, notebooks, leaves, and in general any article of paper or the like comprising a line of permanent deformations and a line of perforations.
