<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Improvements to the means of propulsion and steering of vessels.

The present invention relates to improvements made to the propulsion and control means of vessels of any kind, which are however particularly suitable for use in inland vessels such as barges and the like.
Systems are known in which the rotational

The propeller acquired thrust is increased by arranging a cylindrical ring or sleeve around this propeller, as a result of which the propeller is, as it were, somewhat shielded from the entire body of water, and the effect of the rotating screw is directed in the useful sense.
Likewise, it is known to be able to adjust the angular position of the screw.

rudder.
The present invention concerns a curious combination of these systems, this under such conditions that the sleeve and the screw rotating therein can be randomly oriented, and the direction of rotation of the screw can be instantaneously reversed with a steadily rotating drive. - engine.
This provides not only that the rudder is turned off, but also that the propeller can be placed both in the front and rear possible lane of the vessel, since by alternating the direction of rotation, the propeller can exert both a pulling and thrust movement.
The improved propulsion and control device according to the invention can thus advantageously replace the common fixed propeller located aft of the vessel, and the rudder come, and can equally well be provided for the vessel to propel the latter, in which latter case therefore no propulsion means should be present at the rear of the ship. Placing the system according to the invention at the front of the vessel has the great advantage that the known drifting, which persistently occurs when sailing against wind, for example, is practically switched off.
The device according to the invention is also pre-eminently suitable for completing the existing rear drive of vessels, to serve as an auxiliary. If one considers a vessel having an ordinary fixed rear-drive, on the front of which one places the information according to the invention, it will immediately be noticed that this makes the possibilities of movement of the ship, as it were, unlimited.
This is of the utmost importance for ships entering a port and otherwise having to wait for the intermediary consignment of a towing service, as well as for inland vessels that are
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in inner docks, on canals, etc. to perform all kinds of difficult movements.
It follows that the system of the invention can achieve significant savings in time and cost, as well as increasing the safety of the vessels equipped therewith.
An example by way of example is given below to further explain the characteristics of the invention. The chosen method of implementation is further explained on the basis of the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 shows schematically and in longitudinal section a device according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a view according to arrow f of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a schematic plan view showing the movement of the screw sleeve.
Figures 4 and 5 schematically illustrate two embodiment variants, respectively with a screw that can be rotated in an alternating direction and with a screw that can be turned in a single direction.
Referring to Figures 1, 2 and 3, it is noted that the system of the invention consists essentially of a cylindrical sleeve 1 which is open at both ends, and is traversed transversely by a shaft 2 holding two bevel gears and 3 respectively. 4, and is further elongated upwards and has a bevel gear 5, which meshes with the bevel gear 6, which is on the shaft of a speed reducer. is attached, the latter being connected by a coupling 8 to a drive motor µ¯. The shaft 2 and the conical gears 3, 4 carried by it are stored in a box 10, which is present in the axis of the tube 1,
and is part of this by the radial connecting pins 10, which are intended as bearings for the shaft 2. This assembly is designed in such a way that the wheel 3 or the wheel 4 can be engaged as desired with the conical gears 11 and 12, which are fixed respectively on the shaft of the ship's propeller 13 and on this of a special helical element 14, respectively. This is achieved in that the upper end of the shaft 2 is pivotably contained in a sleeve 15, which, by means of a rocking lever 16 and a compression spring 17, the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
shaft 2 permanently in its lowered position, i.e. that it is the conical gear wheel 3 that normally works with the wheels 11 and 12, respectively. of the screw 13, and the helicoidal element 14 engages.
If the direction of rotation of the screw and of the helicoidal element is to be changed, the shaft 2 must simply be lifted, so that the gear wheel 3 is released and the wheel 4 now engages with the sonic gear wheels 11 and 12. This lifting of the ashes 2 kah is done by one of the sleeve
15 forming part of a rack by lifting the intermediate portion of a cogwheel carried by a pedal 19.
It is clear from the foregoing that the propeller can be driven by the engine in a normal manner by the engine, and this can be driven at will in both directions with steady single direction rotation of the engine. By placing the helicoidal element 14 in the extension, on the other side of the gear box 10, which thus rotates in the opposite direction to the ship's groove 13, one obtains that the water clog formed by the latter is canceled. thus eliminating its detrimental frictional effect on the inner wall of the sleeve.
The radial angular movement of the tube, and therefore also that of the ship's propeller and helicordal element present therein, around the axis 2, is obtained by the following arrangements:
The tube 1 ends at its underside on a journal 20, which comes to lie in the extension of the shaft 2, and which comes to rest in a corresponding cavity of a support beam 21, for example on a wheel.
On the opposite top side of the sleeve, it is extended around the shaft 2 and here carries a gear 22 which engages with a gear 23 attached to the shaft 24. "
From this arrangement it follows that the screw tube 1, carried downwards by the support beam, and guided from above by a bearing 25, can assume an arbitrary position, as shown by the figure 3. Indeed, it is sufficient to turn the shaft by any means, such as a steering wheel, lever or the like, to initiate these movements along the cogwheels 23, 22.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the tube and to place it in a desired position independently of the axis 2.
The example described above and illustrated by Figures 1, 2 and 3 of the accompanying drawing can, of course, be completed by any accessories and aids. For example, all ball, roller and / or thrust bearings have been deliberately omitted from the drawings shown schematically in order to emphasize the actual principle of the invention. The operating mechanism for changing the direction of rotation of the screw. as well as this for angular displacement of the screw tube, can be realized in ways other than those proposed without thereby placing oneself outside or limiting the scope of the invention.
Likewise, it is possible to stretch a grating net or the like over the two open ends of the screw tube, so as to prevent the inside of the tube and the screw and helicoidal element contained therein from the penetration of foreign objects that may be in the water. safeguard.
In Figure 4 it is noted that the principle of the invention could also be applied without making use of the helicoidal element 14, so that the tube 1 would be asymmetrical in this case.
Figure 5 shows schematically an embodiment in which, while retaining the above described features, the screw can only rotate in one direction, thus making the gearbox smaller.
Already; the above-mentioned embodiments were given solely for the purpose of explaining the inventive idea and are in no way binding on the scope of the invention, the essential features of which are otherwise summarized in the following claims. ** WARNING ** End of DESC field may contain beginning of CLMS field **.
