On vise

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
employer de l'air froid, mais on peut aussi introduire du gaz qui est dérivé de la partie supérieure de la tour, et un gaz qui suit le condensat de l'appareil de condensation raccordé au réchauffeur 20 ou à la fois ces deux gaz, Le fluide réfri- gérant gazeux est amené par une,;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
l'agglomération de la matière en briquettes.

"A process for continuously drying a solid material and semi-carbonizing or carbonising peat or other lumpy carbonaceous material".
The present invention relates to a process for continuously drying a solid material and semi-carbonizing or carbonizing peat or other lumpy carbonaceous material.
It will be described below with the aid of the accompanying drawing, which shows an installation according to the invention intended especially for the semi-carbonization of peat.
In the installation according to the invention, the upper part of a vertical tower is gradually charged with peat with a moisture content of about 50%. The peat descends into the tower first passing through a first drying ("predrying") zone where the moisture content drops to about 30-35%, then through a low drying zone. additional, where the rest of the moisture goes, and finally through a charcoal zone where the hemicellulose is broken down or divided.
The necessary heat is supplied by a superheater 5, which is, for example, connected to a hot peat furnace. This superheater heats a certain volume of steam circulating through the carbonization zone and through the drying zone.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Complementary ge and kept in circulation by a blower or fan 19. When the installation is started up, steam is formed spontaneously, the air being expelled. During drying, steam formation continues, the excess steam being taken to a condensing coil 8, where, by condensation, the steam gives up heat to a volume of air which flows through it. the first drying zone and is blown forward by a blower or fan 9.
Moisture in the first drying zone is removed because a volume of moist air corresponding to the volume of fresh air admitted can escape.
In accordance with the embodiment shown in the drawing, there is also provided a circulation of steam taking place only through the complementary drying zone. We aim

by this, on the one hand, to increase the trans1Jlissio: rAe heat to the peat by increasing the speed of the steam, eL, on the other hand., to lower the temperature in the lower part

re the additional drying zone, in such a way that one can be sure that carbonization does not start there, because otherwise it is difficult to remove the moisture remaining in the heart of the piece of peat.
By adjusting valves placed in the pipes or by adjusting the circulation speed. The blowers, it is possible to vary the set of circulating gas volumes.

of very hot peat and / î0C1uir8 at the same time therein a drop in temperature such as the Ganser 0 the spontaneous inflation when the peat coal comes into contact with the air is reduced, a little uabove the lower limit of the carbonization zone a mixture of gas and vapor, which in its 1.3 pass through I G;: TJ J ': xlffeur is derived, by the blower 19, from the mixture of gas and circulating steam: Without the drying zone, additional.
In the lower part of the tower, which is designed as a cooling chamber and is separated by means of the valve 14, cooling can be carried out by spraying water or using a gaseous refrigerant fluid or both. by these two means.
As a gaseous refrigerant of this kind, one can
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
use cold air, but it is also possible to introduce gas which is derived from the upper part of the tower, and a gas which follows the condensate of the condensing apparatus connected to the heater 20 or at the same time these two gases, The gaseous refrigerant fluid is supplied by a ,;
blower 11 to flow from the inlet opening 12 through the material into the cooling chamber. Regardless of the volume of gaseous fluid, there may be advantage in drawing the gas, eliminating the blower 11, through all or part of the heater 20 together with the condensing apparatus and through. the blower 9, from where, 'possibly after mixing with flue gas coming from the superheater, it is introduced into the upper part of the tower; part of the heat inherent in the peat coal can thus be recovered, while, at the same time, one of the blowers can be dispensed with.
The removal of the completely charred peat out of the Greek tower takes place so that at a point situated in the lower part of the tower the material is subjected, with simultaneous reduction of the passage surface, to a mechanical action such- the qudà because of the compression which it undergoes and the reduction of the passage surface or at the same time for these two reasons; it does not fall and that the material below this point can then fall into the lower part, in the form of a cooling chamber, of the tower, said part being moreover kept separate from the tower by a movable closure member.
In the installation according to the drawing, there are provided in the tower a few rotating screens, 13, which, at the bottom, are optionally provided with inclined surfaces, as shown in the drawing; ' these screens are manoeuvrable from the outside by means of small hand wheels and can be 'locked in different positions.
As the screens 13 are moved inwardly by pivoting, the material is compressed so that it remains suspended in the tower. After this has taken place, the olapet or register 14, which closes the cooling chamber 2, is moved, by actuation of a toothed wheel 15, which engages in a rack provided on the underside of the olapet, outwards towards one of the sides of the tower, which causes the material to fall into the cooling chamber, which is then closed by returning the valve 14 to the closed position, the latter possibly being pressed by special members against the batten or sealing gib. the screens 13 are then returned to their initial position by pivoting,
what makes that the material goes down on.le valve ,. After the charred peat has been cooled, it is removed by.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the discharge opening 4. The grid and the discharge opening are preferably designed so that the charred product can be easily discharged directly into a car or other conveyor device.
It has been found adequate to allow gas or steam or both these two fluids to be introduced into or discharged from the tower through an opening going around the tower and connecting to a circular chamber surrounding the tower and placed tangentially provided with an adduction pipe or an abduction pipe In the drawing, several circular chambers of ae kind, which are designated by 16, are shown. In certain circumstances, it may be appropriate to present the circular chamber with a plurality of openings directed obliquely downwards; is particularly advantageous when the gas is introduced into the upper part of the tower, at 17, where a low gas velocity is desired.
When it comes to processing milled peat or other finely divided material, the opening of the annular chamber will be subdivided into a plurality of narrow downwardly directed channels, so that the material does not escape. with gas. So that the gas and vapor suction can act effectively inside the tower, a suction pipe 18 is provided, preferably next to the circular chamber, extending from the middle of the tower. tower and whose opening, in the case of finely divided material, is covered with a network.
If, to increase the production capacity or throughput of the tower, we want to work with a tower of larger diameter, we can make the interior of the tower consist of a cylinder, through which the material does not pass. . In order that the removal of the material can take place after its compression, it is preferably observed in this case that the empty cylinder ends above the point of compression.
If the diameter is chosen to be very large and if one makes, in the outer peripheral wall, openings connected to annular chambers respectively for the introduction and evacuation of gas or vapor or at the same time of the two fluids, it is advisable to present the inner cylinder with similar openings which are connected to annular chambers extending against the inner face of the cylinder around it, these chambers being connected to those of the outer peripheral casing or wall, for example by a few radially extending pipes.
The first drying in the upper part of the tower can take place by means of circulating air, part of which is
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
admitted as fresh air, however, a corresponding volume of moist air is exhausted. The air is then kept circulating by means of a blower through the first drying zone and outside it through a condensing device, in which it borrows heat from the steam, coming out of the tower below. The circulating air can be mixed with the flue gas which emanates from the hearth of the superheater.
In a variant of the installation shown for the semi-carbonization of peat, the semi-carbonized peat is removed by a hydraulic closure into which the lower part of the tower opens.
The invention will now be described with the aid of the appended drawing, with regard to the semi-cerbonization of peat. It has however appeared that in principle the same process can be employed with advantage, on the one hand for the complete oarbonization of the peat, on the other hand for the drying of another material in pieces, the drying possibly being accompanied by a subsequent heat treatment for another use, for example carbonization.
In the event that the subsequent heat treatment results in the release of gas, vapor or both, as in the case of the complete carbonization of peat, ordinary wood, softwood or the like, .the circulation is preferably carried out through the heat treatment zone considered by means of a special circulation pipe with a blower, said pipe being connected to annular chambers connected to the tower by openings, as shown in the drawing.
The gas and vapor produced are removed through the circulation line, however, in order to prevent a very large quantity of tar from flowing upwards towards the additional drying zone, care is taken to ensure that that a volume of gas and vapor large enough is withdrawn so that a portion of vapor from the additional drying zone also follows.
The mixture of gas and vapor withdrawn is cooled and condensed, preferably in a heat exchanger, in which the air for the first drying zone is heated. The heat necessary for the carbonization process can be supplied by the fact that the circulating gas is led through a superheater, but the necessary heat can also be produced by carrying out in the carbonization zone, by means of the introduction of a very small volume of air, corresponding combustion.
In the manufacture of peat or wood coke, it can
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
agree to expose the coke to high temperature treatment in an area below the carbonization area which is optionally equipped with a special circulation and a superheater.
In some cases it has been found suitable for carrying out a process according to the invention to compose the tower of parts or sections differing in diameter. At the places where the introduction and the evacuation of air or this steam takes place, the minimum diameter of the tower was then maintained, while, in order to obtain a higher production capacity, the first drying zone is made to consist of , the additional drying zone and, possibly, also the heat treatment zone, moreover in parts of larger diameter. Then, when passing from a portion of larger diameter to a portion of smaller diameter, downwardly inclined surfaces are provided, along which the material, which must not contain too large pieces, passes continuously.
The product which is removed from the tower is, in some cases, highly flammable, if it has not been cooled effectively. The danger of ignition is avoided even as the product has been cooled in the cooling chamber before being exposed to the access of air. However, this danger can, according to the invention, be prevented even when the cooling chamber is omitted and the product is withdrawn directly from the lower part of the carbonization zone. For this, we proceed in such a way that the product obtained, when it is removed from the tower 8 away from the air, is transported in a presso. briquettes, in which the product is pressed into briquettes.
Since in this way the product does not come into contact with air, before it has been compressed into briquettes, the danger of spontaneous ignition is avoided, and the manufacture of briquettes, which , also in view of the fact that the product, as it leaves the tower, is bulky and unwieldy in non-agglomerated form, is advantageous, is carried out, in a manner advantageous to the point of view of the manufacturing technique, directly as a result of the carbonization process. Preferably, the process in question according to the invention is carried out by advancing the product by means of a screw or chain conveyor, from the base of the tower, in a railway duct which opens between the members. pressers of a briquette press.
It may be advisable to feed an independent gas or water vapor into the closed pipe, so that no oxidation of the product takes place. In certain cases, it may also be appropriate to introduce into the pipe a suitable binder to facilitate
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the agglomeration of the material into briquettes.
