<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
R =-F
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"IMPROVEMENTS TO ELASTIC SUSPENSION DEVICES FOR AIRPLANE ENGINES AND THE LIKE" -
The present invention relates to elastic suspension devices for machines subjected to vibrations and it is more particularly aimed at the oas of 'engines or power units for airplanes, hydrofoils and the like.
The devices of the kind in question known to oe day are generally composed of a rigid support, most often made of sections or tubes, and appropriate elastic members interposed between said support and the engine which it is desired to ensure. suspension. The support, rigidly fixed to the fuselage, spindle or other, practically does not affect the elasticity of the suspension
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
and on the contrary, we arrange for it to behave appreciably like a solid that cannot be deformed in all directions, which is obtained by laborious, heavy and enoombrant bracing of the various parts which constitute it.
The subject of the invention is an elastic suspension device in which, on the contrary, the support is deliberately deformable and oonoourt with the elastic members proper to ensure the desired elasticity of suspension.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the type in question which, thanks to the flexibility of the support in the horizontal direction, has in said direction a notably greater elasticity than in the vertical direction, an advantageous result in many cases. and more especially with oylindresen V or X-shaped engines where the resultant of the periodic forces is often horizontal or substantially horizontal,
The invention also aims to provide an elastic device of the type in question in which the resistance to lateral forces tending to move the engine to the right or to the left results, mainly at least, from the deformation of the elastic members interposed between the support and the engine. and not from the reaction of the support itself.
According to the invention, the support is essentially made up of two independent parts located on either side of the engine to be supported, said parts being fixed to the fuselage, spindle or the like in a substantially rigid manner in the vertical direction and on the contrary of hinged or deformable way in the horizontal direction. Each of said parts may be formed by two legs diverging from each other in the form of a V lying in a vertical plane, the common end of said legs or point of the V carrying the elastic members for connection with the mo-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
tor, while the free ends of the V are articulated to the fuselage or fuaeau in such a way that the rigid assembly of the two legs can pivot about a vertical axis.
According to another characteristic of the invention, the free end of the engine, that is to say the rear end in the most frequent case of an engine carrying a traction helicopter, is directly linked to the fuselage or equivalent by means of an elastic connecting member forming the pivoting center of the motor in the deflections allowed by the support device itself.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, will give a better understanding of the invention, the characteristics that it has and the advantages that it is likely to provide:
Fig. 1 is a side view of a suspension device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is the corresponding plan view.
Fig. 3 is an explanatory diagram of the deformations of the suspension in a horizontal plane.
Fig. 4 and 5 are detail cross-sections on a large scale along IV-IV and V-V (fig. 3), showing an elastic suspension member,
Fig. 6 and 7 indicate the same way, that is to. say in horizontal section and in vertical section, an alternative embodiment of an elastic suspension member.
Fig. 8 to 10 represent on a larger scale the rear attachment device, respectively in elevation, in vertical section along IX-IX (fig. 8) and in horizontal section along X-X (fig. 8).
In figs 1 and 2 we have shown in 1 an airplane engine carrying at the end a helioe 2 that we will assume traotioe to fix the ideas
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and it being understood that this in no way limits the present invention. This engine can, for example, be with V or H displacement.
It must be fixed in cantilever to the front of the fuselage or spindle 3 closed by the usual firewall plate 4.
For this purpose, a double support is provided in two independent parts arranged respectively to the right and to the left of the motor 1. Each part comprises an upper ti rant '5 articulated to the fuselage 3 by 6 by one of its ends and descending obliquely from rear to front in a vertical plane substantially parallel to the mean plane of the engine to carry a fixing flange 7. To the flange 7 is also fixed a strut 8 which descends obliquely in a vertical plane, but d 'front to back, to come to articulate with the fuselage 3 at a point 9.
The tie rod 5 and the strut 8 thus form a sort of V lying in a vertical plane, its vertices 6 and 8 being articulated to the fuselage along the same vertical while its point is formed by the flange 7 intended to support the engine 1 The planes of the two Vs thus formed are parallel, as indicated in FIG. 2, or they can converge very slightly from the back to the front following the oas.
The engine 1 is provided laterally with fixing studs 10 (fig. 4 and 5), arranged substantially along the same transverse horizontal axis passing through its center of gravity G or in the immediate vicinity thereof and each of these studs receives a manohon 11 on which are fixed two discs 12, the whole being clamped in place by a éorou 13. The corresponding flange 7 is also perforated and receives two kinds of cups 14 which are attached to it opposite one of the other by bolts 15, their bottoms being in contact with one another. Each bowl is connected to the disc 12 which makes it faoe by an oouohe 16 of rubber oonve-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
nably vulcanized in place to adhere strongly to metal parts in the known manner.
The edges of the discs 12 are raised externally, as shown, and in the horizontal plane the space between said edges and the edges of the corresponding bowl 14 is filled with rubber, as indicated in 16a, on the contrary, in the vertical plane the space in question is not entirely filled, but has a void with an ooin-shaped section, as indicated at 17, freezes 4, so as to form a progressive stop as the vertical force increases.
The elastic members 12, 16, 14 support the weight of the motor and are designed to transmit the force of the helio to the support; in addition to the above-mentioned components, the engine is still connected to the fuselage by an elastic member arranged at its rear end and directly supported by the firewall sheet 4, said member having in principle auoun effort to bear, but having to serve as a elastic center of oscillation of the motor. As indicated in broken lines in fig. 9, the engine ends at. the rear by a stud 18 on which is clamped by a nut 19 a casing 20 disposed inside another casing 21 fixed to the firewall plate 4.
The space 22 separating the two casings 20 and 21 is lined with rubber, this lining preferably comprising voids 22a and 22b in its lower and upper parts respectively, in order to increase flexibility in the vertical direction.
The elastic suspension thus produced works as follows:
The elastic members 12, 16, 14 alone support the weight of the engine, the traotion of the helium, the reaction torque, as well as the various other vertical or longitudinal forces or longitudinal axis couples. These organs, being harder in the horizontal direction than in the vertical direction, are particularly well suited
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
to resist the tensile force of the propeller, while exhibiting relatively high elasticity with respect to periodic torques (longitudinal axis) and vertical vibratory forces.
On the other hand, the engine cannot tilt around them, retained as it is by the rear attaohe 20, 21, 22 which also leaves it a certain freedom of movements in the vertical plane because of the voids 22a and 22b. The supports 5, 8 then behave rigidly.
On the contrary, in the case of transverse forces or of vertical axis torques (periodic forces, gyroscopic torques, centrifugal aooelations, etc.) the whole motor tends to rotate around the rear attachment 20, 21, 22 which then plays the role of a relatively rigid center. Suppose, for example, that a transverse force F is applied to the center of gravity G (fig. 3), the whole motor rotates at an angle 6 '\ around the attachment 20, 21, 22, causing with him the two half-supports which turn at substantially the same angle around their attachments 6, 9.
Under these conditions, the two elastic members 12, 16, 14 are strongly deformed in the horizontal direction, one from front to back, the other from rear to front, and this deformation results in reactions T1 and T2 equal and opposites which form a return torque balancing the torque formed by the disturbing force F and the reaction R which originates in the rear attachment.
If we call d the half-distance between the flanges and L the distance between the center of gravity G and the rear attachment 7. we therefore have:
2 T1d @ FL and
R = -F
It is therefore understood that by limiting the elasticity of the elastic members 12, 14, 16 and of the attachment 20, 21, 22 in the horizontal direction, the angle of horizontal angular deflection can be limited at will.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
tal (yaw angle) of. engine relative to the aircraft for a determined transverse force, It is also seen that oes angular deflections of the engine are susceptible to a large extent and this without causing any deformation of the prinoipaux elastic members in the transverse direction, thanks to. the deformability of. support itself.
Finally, it is understood that the resistance of the suspension to transverse forces is obtained without any bulky and heavy bracing liable to hinder free access to the engine and in particular to complicate the rapid dismantling of the latter from the cell which carries it.
In the variant of FIGS. 6 and 7, the main elastic supports oomportent a cylindrical mass 16b of rubber; disposed between a central frame 14a and an outer frame 12a. The first is secured to the motor via a caliper 23, while the second is secured to a sleeve 24 taking the place and place of the flange 7 of FIG. 4 and 5. The upper and lower ends of the mass 16b are shaped in oons so as to constitute progressive support stops in the known manner.
It should also be understood that the present description in no way limits the field of the invention from which one would not depart by replacing the provisions described by any other equivalent, in particular with regard to the production of both the main elastic members and the 'rear attachment. It should also be noted that the joints 6 and 9, instead of being formed by ball joints in the manner schematically represented in FIG. 1 and 2, could also include a layer of elastic material allowing angular deflections without opposing a significant reaction.
Finally, and as it goes without saying, the invention not only encompasses
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
ment the elastic suspension devices of the type described, or any equivalent attractant, but also the assemblies comprising them, in particular airplanes whose engines or some of them are mounted by means of such devices.
- Summary and claims -
1. Resilient suspension for aircraft engines and the like, characterized in that it oomporte a support elastically deformable in the horizontal direction perpendicular to the drive shaft and substantially rigid in the vertical direction.
