<EMI ID=1.1>

Method and apparatus for the cold drawing of cords of

Cold drawing of ropes and thick hair

customary for drawing filaments or thin fibers
owing to the fact that the great force necessary subjects
these devices to extraordinary demands * It
was discovered that the bristles or strings of polyamide
can be stretched flawlessly in the same way
of metal wires. Without this end of the rope
is first elongated in some way and is drawn through a conical hole in a sheet
thick steel, a metal plate or the like. The wide inlet opening corresponds to the diameter
of the unstretched raw rope, while the opening of
narrow outlet is approximately equal to the diameter of
the rope in a fully stretched state, so that the
unstretched rope cannot pass through the hole. Taper
opening can be chosen between wide limits

so that metal sheets or plates of different thicknesses can be used. It may however be advantageous to choose thick materials because in the case of a more acute taper angle within determined limits, the stretching has a more gradual and more uniform rate.
The necessary strength and rigidity must also be considered. The device is advantageously lubricated by means of water, oil or suspensions of graphite or the like in order to decrease the friction and at the same time remove the heat of friction which arises. Lubrication is particularly essential at high drawing speeds. The metal surface coming into contact with the polyamide should be as smooth as possible.

prevents tearing of the rope, which is often the case otherwise. In addition, the highest possible stretch can be obtained, whereby the greatest strength and tension stability are produced.
To avoid premature wear, the opening of. output is advantageously extended as shown in the drawing. The only consequence of the wear is to make the taper angle progressively more acute or to displace the conical surface while the size of the outlet opening remains unchanged. The taper angle can of course also be quite large, as this corresponds to the sharp transition when stretching polyamide cords in a free space. In this case, however, it is advantageous to remove by grinding the narrow end of the supposedly complete truncated cone (see figure). The inlet opening can optionally be chosen a little larger than what corresponds to the diameter of the unstretched cord to allow free access of the lubricant.
The exit opening must not correspond with absolute precision to the diameter of the stretched rope; it must, however, have a diameter such that the unstretched rope cannot pass.
