<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

COUNTERWEIGHT BALANCING DEVICE FOR COMPASS-SHAPED CARRIER MECHANISMS.
Numerous devices have been devised with a view to ensuring, by counterweight, the "indifferent" balance in all positions and inclinations to articulated mechanisms carrying various objects: lamps, microphone, mirror, drawing ruler, tablet, etc. None, however, of the known devices of this type has fully and precisely achieved the problem in question. All must have recourse to brakes or frictions which reduce the mobility, flexibility and consequently the convenience of the carrying mechanism; even some of these known devices can only be used from certain angles.
In order to obtain a total solution, it is not enough in terms of effc: that the device is isostatic in one or more positions. determined; but the balance must be exact and indifferent in all the points which can occupy, in the sphere of use, not only the object carried by the mechanism, but also all the carrying and balancing organs, transmitters or receivers , orders printed on the organs or the object that they carry, during the movements of oelui.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
There is more to this here than just a rocker or a straight lever of the first degree of which it is enough to balance the power and the resistance horizontally. The problem is also more complicated than that of balancing a rocker which can pivot a complete turn, in indifferent equilibrium, around an axis with a view to the use of an object (lamp or other) which one would suspend on it, in all the degrees of a circle of gyration.
It is a question here of balancing a whole material system comprising several organs, which in their evolutions each act in the "way with particular potential energies giving rise to forces which must remain isodynamic on either side of the center of the body. pivot around which they react reciprocally. This equilibrium can only be obtained on condition that the torque of all the forces applied to the centers of gravity of power and resistance remains equal and in opposite directions on both sides. other of the central axis of rotation.
In this way, according to a classical definition of equilibrium, there will be guaranteed at all points, "the state of rest under the action of forces which destroy themselves."
To achieve this condition, in accordance with the invention, it is necessary that in all positions of the carried object, the center of gravity of the latter with its supporting arms and transmitters of the controls, and the center of gravity of the counterweight, with its supporting and receiving branches, are always on the same imaginary straight line passing through the central axis around which the whole mechanism pivots, the forces applied to these centers of gravity being equal and of opposite sign, while the distances of these last at the center of pivoting must always agree proportionally with each other to the reduction or amplitude scale adopted.
Practically the counterweight (s) must be conditioned in such a way as to constitute a faithful reproduction, but reversed, on an appropriate scale, of the supporting organs. It is thus that if one uses carrying or transmitting organs which are not rectilinear, but curvilinear, or if the pivots of these organs
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
are off-center if the organs themselves are off-center, it is essential that these variations in shape or arrangement are reproduced in a corresponding manner in the shape @ the arrangement given to the counterweight as a whole.
The invention also provides means intended to maintain the indifferent state of equilibrium of the carrying mechanism while the object carried varies in weight or is replaced on the mechanism under consideration by another of different mass. In this case, the corresponding part of the counterweight must be made heavier or lighter without the position of its center of gravity being changed, in other words it is essential that the centers of gravity of the object to be balanced and the device which equilibrates always pass through the imaginary straight line defined previously.
Finally, when the object worn: lamp, mirror, etc. must be able to oscillate itself in its support, or take various inclinations, means are provided to maintain the center of gravity of the object, - for example a lamp with its socket and its shade, - on the axis, of the fork for example, around which the assembly must pivot.
If all these conditions are found equalized, the caliper or equivalent member, which supports the whole mechanism, will keep perfectly the vertical direction without being stressed rather on one side than the other, and the caliper itself. it will even be able to pivot around its vertical axis without undergoing lateral friction.
Many balancing devices can be made within the scope of the invention thus defined. It is therefore possible to use, as transmission members, displacements imprinted with real or fictitious bearings forming the balancing device, articulated parallelograms, or endless cables, chains, bands driving pulleys, toothed wheels, etc.
The drawings appended to this specification thus show, by way of example, in FIGS. I to 5, various embodiment diagrams, while FIG. 6 and 7 show two embodiments of balanced lamps according to the invention. Fig. 8 and 9 relate to means for centering the carried object and for adjusting the counterweight.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The device shown in Fig. I comprises two compasses ABM and AEP pivoting in the opposite direction around the central axis A, the length and the weight of one of the compasses being compensated by the length and the weight of the other. , so as to realize the general equation of equilibrium: L xp = 1 x P
In order to transmit to the balancing system the displacements printed on the objects carried, articulated parallelograms ABOD and AEFG are used, respectively nested with the branches of the compasses and forming their extension. To ensure the balance of the system, the sides of the AEFG parallelogram are loaded to the extent necessary to achieve the equilibrium equation of the components, while at the end of the PG arm the counterweight P is placed, balancing the mass M fixed at the end of the PM arm.
It is obvious that if, as it has just been said, the branches of the compasses and the sides of the opposed articulated parallelograms satisfy the equilibrium equation: L x p = 1 x P; if the straight line Li joining the center of gravity of the mass to that of the counterweight P always passes, (that is to say for all the inclinations and amplitudes that it is possible and desirable $ to give to the compasses and to the parallelograms), by the common center of rotation A, and if the distances from these centers of gravity to the center of rotation always remain proportionally equivalent, on the same scale, the mechanism thus constructed, with the object it supports, will be in an "indifferent" equilibrium in all the positions that the envisaged object can occupy.
As shown in Fig.I bis, one can replace the six cont weights provided in Fig.I by a single counterweight of apparently complicated shape.
In the diagram of Fig.2, we find the two articulated parallelograms ABOD and ADEF, but the two compasses MNR and RHP each have a fictitious, imaginary branch, NR and RH, R being the common pivot center. The mass M is compensated by the counterweight P. For the mechanism to be in equilibrium, like that of Fig.I, it is sufficient that the sides of the parallelograms ABOD and ADEF
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
as well as the real branches MN and HP of the compasses correspond to the equilibrium equation:
L xp = 1 x P. and that the line Li joining the centers of gravity of the mass M and the counterweight P constantly passes through the center of pivoting R, and finally that these centers of gravity are always, at the scales adopted, at a reactive distance from the center R proportionally and equally equivalent.
As in the case of Fig.I, we can also design a single counterweight of apparently complicated shape (Fig.2bis) pivoting in F and E and which over the length FE compensates for the weight of the sides AB, BC and CD, counting made of the part already compensated by the sides AF and DE, while this counterweight compensates, on the length HP, the weight from N to M, and finally compensates in P the weight of the mass M taking into account, in each section from this form of counterweight, the different centers of gravity of each element of the mechanism, which each move in their own way.
Fig.3 shows a variant of the diagram of Fig.2. We find there the MNR and RHP compasses, the NR and RH branches this time being real. The sides B R 'and OR' 'can be formed by cables or wires of small section, tensioning wires or the like. The sides R 'A and R "D, as well as the branches of the RHP compass can be loaded separately so as to respond, as in the preceding diagrams, to the equilibrium conditions. One could only use here two RH counterweights. and AP (Fig.3bis) or even realize a single counterweight of more or less complicated shape satisfying the conditions exposed for the case of Fig.2bis.
In the diagram of Fig. 4, the sides of the parallelograms are replaced by cables, chains or endless bands passing over pulleys or pinions b, bt carried by the respective pivots B and C of the compasses MB, A and ACP. As shown schematically in the drawing, an has concentrated between A and C the counterweight which compensates for the mass of the branch AB and of the part of the free mission members (cable, band or belt), which starting from A 'surrounds the pulley b and ends at A '', minus the part which connects A 'to A' 'bypassing pulley b'. In this case again, a single counterweight of appropriate profile and dimensions can be provided.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
required, brought around the center of the pulley b '(Fig.4bis). This counterweight will compensate, in accordance with.
the invention, not only the object M, but also all the articulations and the movable parts of the carrier mechanism in all imaginable positions.
The diagram of Fig.5 differs from the diagram of Fig.4 only in that the branch BM supporting the object M is not rectilinear, but curved. The balancing is carried out as before, only it is necessary that the two counterweights (Fig.5) or the single counterweight (Fig.5bis), in its link arm C, have a corresponding profile, on a proportional scale. , to that of the curved branch BM.
In order to better fix the ideas, two embodiments of the invention are shown in Fig.6 and 7. The construction of Fig.6 corresponds to the diagram of Fig. 2. Around an axis o, carried by a metal bracket d surmounting a pivot e mounted in an appropriate base f can pivot the articulated parallelograms constituted by rods AB and DC joined at their upper part by a branch g extending into h to carry a lamp i with its socket and a shade. At their lower part, the rods AB and DC are articulated on circular electric current distributors 1 rotating on the pivoting axis o and they are fixed to the branches AF, DE extending the rods
AB and DU of the balancing parallelogram.
The branches AF, DE are articulated at their other end on circular counterweights m integral with counterweight P. The branches AF, DE thus form, with these counterweights, balance to the mass of the lamp and its accessories, as well as to the parallelogram ABCD
EMI7.1
and to the corresponding articulatioiial. An electrical conductor n terminating at the lamp is controlled by a switch p provided on the bracket d. The electrical equipment will obviously vary according to the applications envisaged.
The construction of the balanced lamp of Fig. 6 corresponds to the diagram in Fig. 5. The endless transmission cable has
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
is housed in tubes q connecting the counterweight mass r of the lower parallelogram to a caliper s carrying the axis of the upper pulley b, the lower pulley b 'forming part of the counterweight r, to which is connected on the other hand, by the short arm. be t the mass P. The assembly rotates freely in equilibrium around the axis o of the support d, which will receive a construction similar to that of Fig. 6 or will differ more or less depending on the circumstances.
In all the diagrams represented in Figs. 1,2 and 3, the branch BM of the compass carrying the mass to be balanced, lamp or other object, is located in the axial extension of the upper articulation pivots of the parallelogram ABCD; If this is not the case, it would obviously be necessary to provide a corresponding offset of the balancing counterweight with respect to the articulation pins of the lower parallelogram.
Fig. 8 shows a simple means of adjusting the center of gravity of a lamp mounted with its socket inside a shade v. For this purpose, a slider u is used which is laterally located inside this lampshade. If the lamp is replaced by a bulb of a different shape, whose center of gravity does not correspond to that of the preceding one. te, it suffices to move the slide and after adjustment to fix it by one of the many known wedging means.
Fig. 9 shows a device allowing safe and precise adjustment of the counterweight, both during assembly and when replacing an electric bulb with a heavier or lighter bulb. It consists of a disc w, itself forming a counterpiece as shown in Fig.6, and in which cavities x of cylindrical or other shape have been drilled arranged on circles concentric with respect to the center of the disc. It is in these cavities that one / of the lead bodies of corresponding shape: balls, rollers, etc., which will be held in place by means of a plate, bearing for example the manufacturer's advertisement. .
Lead bodies, which would be poured into a receptacle as in the counterweights acting only in one direction, would be
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
in the present case subjects to move and consequently would cause a continual imbalance of the mechanism. On the contrary, by judiciously introducing them into the cavities x parallel to the axis of the counterweight, or by removing them from them, these bodies can only move in the direction of the axis, even if these cavities are designed to receive each one. several of these bodies - which does not influence the center of gravity of a system which always works in the same plane.
Of course, these pellets must be distributed judiciously, the number of which can be easily determined beforehand, so if only one pellet needs to be added, it will be put in the middle cavity. will remove them from opposing cavities of a circle comprising an even number of cavities.
If 3,4,5,6,8 are needed, they will be distributed at equal distances over circles divisible by 3,4,5,6,8. If we need to add 7,9,11,13 ... pellets, we will put one in the center and the others in the circles divisible or multiplied by 6,8,10 or 2 x 6, (using three concentric circles x1 , x2 and x3 of 6.10 and 16 cavities respectively). In addition, as one can possibly have the two faces of the disc w, - then using two closing plates, - one can, if one wishes to achieve absolute precision, distribute on one and the other face of the disc w , circles of cavities of different diameters and in sufficient and diverse numbers, as in the well-known discs of dividing devices.
