<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Process for the manufacture of rolls for cold rolling mills.
Steels are used for the manufacture of cold-black rolled rolls, which are subjected to high compressive forces, the carbon content of which is determined so as to produce on the surface, during the trooping. , the hardness of the glass. The content of alloying elements in these steels depends on the desired quenching depth, which must be adapted to the compressive forces. The cylinders made of these steels are water quenched, which makes

ti that the core area becomes too dense and remains soft.
As a result of this texture, it is not possible to vary the core resistance within essential limits in cylinders thus manufactured; the core toughness is also relatively low due to the troostitic character of the texture. The object of the invention is to avoid these drawbacks.
This object is achieved, according to the invention, by virtue of the fact that the rolls are made of a steel alloy capable of undergoing, even in the case of relatively large cross sections, deep quenching and of receiving, during the improvement consisting of abrupt cooling and tempering, a substantially uniform hardness over the entire cross section, and that the cylinders made of this steel alloy are, after the improvement leading to resistance - this desired core, hardened on their surface, using induction heating.
For example, according to the invention, for the manufacture of cold rolling mill rolls, steel alloys containing:
0.55 to 1.2% carbon
0.10 to 1.0% silicon
0.5 to 2.0% manganese

0.1 to 0.8% vanadium. the vanadium content can be replaced, in whole or in part, by a titanium, tantalum or niobium content. The steel alloys can also contain additions of molybdenum and / or tungsten of up to about 2%.
Cylinders made from these steel alloys are first improved to achieve the desired core strength and then are, by induction heating, for example by heating with high frequency current, carried in the surface layer, at the quenching temperature, and quenching.

The value of the vanadium content, between the stated limits, is subordinate to the desired core resistance, and is preferably chosen at a figure higher as the core resistance needs to be higher. . The carbon content of the alloy will advantageously also be set at a value that is all the greater the higher the vanadium content.
As examples of rolls of cold rolling mills. fruits according to the invention, the compositions of two cylinders of different diameter and stone resistance will be indicated below:

The special advantage of cylinders manufactured in accordance with the invention is that, compared to cylinders constructed in the usual way, they exhibit high core strength and better core toughness. If one sought to obtain, with the present method of manufacture, corre- sponding core resistances, one would have to increase the content of alloying elements and thereby obtain at the same time a gradual increase. of the hardened border layer ,.
Cylin-. dres having an excessive quenching depth are not able, because of their insufficient toughness, to withstand the bending or shock forces generated during operation. Another / advantage of the rolls produced in accordance with the invention is that it is possible, by an appropriate choice of the vanadium content, to minimize, during induction heating, a softening of the transition zone situated. between border and core

given the high annealing stability of these steels. Optionally, it is possible to inductively quench the surface, also the bore of the rolls, in order to increase the resistance to alternating forces.
Surface quenching can also extend to the surface of the cylinder journals.
