<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Process for obtaining magnesium carbonate from ores and other compounds of magnesium and calcium.
The present invention relates to the treatment of ores such as dolomite and other compounds oxidized with carbonates of magnesium and calcium and it relates to a process for separating in the form of carbonate, the magnesium contained therein, and this in more advantageous and more economical conditions than by the known methods.
Of the chemical reagents used in the methods customarily employed for this purpose, the chief is carbonic acid which forms soluble magnesium bicarbonate and insoluble calcium carbonate. The processes which use this reaction require a preliminary calcination of the dolomite or other ore as well as subsequent treatments either for the precipitation of the magnesium in the form of carbonate or for the purification of the product. These manipulations are detrimental to the economy of the processes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to the present invention, the above drawbacks are avoided by using as reagent a compound of a volatile body capable of producing a double salt of magnesium which, on the one hand, can be separated from the corresponding calcium salt. and, on the other hand, is easily heat dissociable, so that the reagent can be recovered and reused in the operating cycle. The reaction is advantageously carried out in the presence of a catalyst.
For this purpose, the ore or magnesium product, finely ground and optionally calcined, is subjected to the action of a solution of ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate in the presence of a catalyst such as a methylated amine or a methylated amide. or one of their salts, for example methyl amine carbonate, tetramethylamine carbonate, a sulfomethylamide or else methylated compounds of amines or aromatic amides.
After formation of the double salt (magnesium and ammonium carbonate) which crystallizes in fine crystals and remains in suspension in the stock solution, the latter is separated first from the calcium carbonate and the impurities by decantation or centrifugation, then from the double salt suspended by filtration or re-centrifugation. The double salt is then subjected to thermal drying which decomposes the ammonium carbonate. The vapors given off (NH3 and CO2) are condensed and the condensate is returned to the solution.
This, thus reconstituted, is returned to the ore or magnesium product in order to continue extracting the magnesium salt until exhaustion.
It is advantageous, but not essential, to add alcohol, preferably methyl alcohol, to the stock solution, the presence of which has the effect of improving crystallization, of promoting the formation of double ammonium carbonate and of magnesium, and to lower the boiling point of the stock solution.
The process can be performed intermittently or continuously. In either case it is very economical, because the implementation requires only a relatively small amount.

of reagent which is continuously switched on.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, the diagram of an installation suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention.
The magnesium product, for example finely ground dolomite and partially or totally calcined and then recarbonated, is introduced through the hopper 1 into the receptacle 2 which, on the other hand, receives, through the valve 3, the reagent consisting of a solution of carbonate d Ammonium with added catalyst and, optionally, methyl alcohol. To accelerate the formation of double salt, the mass is stirred by the stirrer 4.
When the reaction is complete, the valve 5 is opened and the mass consisting of insoluble calcium carbonate and of solution containing the double salt Mg CO3 (NH4) 2 CO3 in suspension is allowed to flow into a settling vessel 6. In the container 6, the calcium carbonate settles to the bottom while the double salt remains in suspension in the solution and is sent, with the latter, through the line 7 to a filtration apparatus 8.
The double ammonium-magnesian salt is separated by the filter 9 from the stock solution which is returned by a pump 10 to the accumulator tank 11, from where it will be returned to the autoclave 2 via the line 12 and the valve 3 for the processing of a new load.
To recover the volatile products entrained on the one hand with the calcium carbonate, on the other hand with the double salt, steam is introduced into coils 13, 14 respectively lining the bottom of the settling tank 6 and the apparatus of filtration 8.
The vapors given off (water, alcohol, ammonia and carbonic acid) escape from devices 6 and 8 respectively through pipes 15 and 16 which lead them to refrigerant 17 where. they condense, with reconstitution of ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate. The condensate collected in the tank 18 is, after opening of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
valve 19 and closing of valve 20, returned by pump 10 to accumulator 11 where it enriches the reactive solution. To compensate for the consumption and loss of carbonic acid, carbon dioxide is injected into the solution through valve 23.
The dried calcium carbonate is drawn off at 21 and the magnesium carbonate at 22.
By way of example, to treat 300 kg of calcined and recarbonated dolomite, 2000 liters of reactive solution containing 10% ammonium carbonate and 1% catalyst are used, with the addition of 1280 liters of methyl alcohol. . These proportions can, however, be varied and the addition of alcohol and catalyst can even be omitted entirely since it is not essential.
Instead of being carried out intermittently, with alternating separation and drying operations in apparatus 6 and 8, the process can be carried out continuously, apparatus 6 and 8 then serving. only at the separation, one of the calcium carbonate and the other of the ammonico-magnesian carbonate. In this case, the coils 13, 14 are no longer found in the devices 6 and 8, but in dryers connected to these devices and in which the separated solids are discharged periodically or continuously. From these dryers then leave the conduits 15 and 16 ensuring the recovery of the vapors and their flow to the condenser 17.
Of course, other modifications can be made to the installation described without departing from the scope of the invention.
