<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"Dry cell n.
The present invention relates to a dry cell, the anode of which forms: receptacle for the other elements of the cell.
According to the invention, intersecting metal wires are placed in the depolarizing mass, the latter being directly applied to the anode and the wires having points of contact with the anode, so as to reduce the ohmic resistance of the depolarizing agent. These metallic threads are preferably formed by iron wool distributed in the depolarizing agent in a naturally entangled layer.
The present invention also provides for the introduction of a solution of milk, ca.sein or albuminous substance in general in the aloaline electrolyte of the battery, making it spongy by saponification and preventing the drying out of the electrolyte, while fat forms a protective layer on the cathode, preventing attack
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of this open circuit.
As a preferred form, the invention provides a flat dry cell battery mainly comprising a metal anode forming a housing, a depolarizer applied directly to the bottom of the housing and covered with a separation membrane, a metal cathode, disposed above the depolarizer, and an electrolyte. One or more of these cells of the cell are constituted as indicated above for the depolarizer and the electrolyte and as described below for the other cells of the cell, these characteristics being able to be applied independently or in combination.
The invention provides in particular that the separation membrane consists of a perforated sheet, covered with an insulator, this sheet being of slightly convex shape, so that, applied strongly to the depolarizing agent, the sheet straightens up and its edges become upright. press against the wall of the case, preventing any swelling of the depolarizer.
The invention also provides more particularly for the constitution of a dry battery of flat shape forming, by means of the attachment of a bulb, an absolutely complete flashlight.
In this battery, the casing is made of gra.phitée sheet iron, the wall of the casing being locally curved, so as to form a housing for the bulb, this housing constituting the socket and reflector. The end of the cathode can pass through the wall of the anode casing by an isolated passage, in order to be brought into contact with the bulb; it can also be connected to an insulating cover mounted on the housing, the connection point forming a terminal towards the outside. If a metal cover is used, the cathode attachment point will be isolated from the cover which is itself isolated from the housing.
Two embodiments of dry cells according to the invention are described below without limitation, with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawings, in order
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
to illustrate the main characteristics of the invention.
The fig.l is a longitudinal section of a cylindrical dry cell according to the invention.
Fig.2 is a cross section of the cell shown in Fig.l.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a plant stack according to the invention with the cover removed.
Fig.4 is a longitudinal section of the, stack according to Fig.3.
Fig. 5 is a v-V cross section of the. fig.3.
The cylindrical cell shown in Figs. 1 and a comprises a tubular anode 1 made of sheet iron, with a graphitized interior surface and forming a receptacle for the other elements of the cell, a depolarizer 2 applied directly to the inner circular surface of the anode 1 in a layer of thickness in equal, so as to have an oval free section, a separation membrane 3 of suitable composition, a pasty alkaline electrolyte 4 and a cathode 5, consisting of a corrugated zinc sheet.
Depolarizer 2 consists of alum mixture of retort charcoal, potassium permanganate and infusory earth, the potassium permanganate amounting to about 50% by weight of that of the retort charcoal. This mixture constitutes a pulverulent or plastic material pressed against the inner surface of the anode 1 at the time of the constitution of the. battery. The depolarizer also includes iron wool whose strands are in contact with the anode 1 and which decreases the chemical resistance of the depolarizer including the. surface is advantageously enlarged by a wavy configuration (dashed lines in fig. 2).
The electrolyte 4, in the form of a paste, consists of a mixture of oaustic soda, potash or sodium sulphate with a starchy material and a solution of milk or casein.
The cathode ¯5 consists of a sheet of zinc
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
corrugated and disposed in the greater width of the hollow formed by the ovalized depolarizer. A large surface expansion of the cathode is therefore obtained. this could also consist of a foil of aluminum, cadmium, tin, bismuth or any other metal with high negative potential.
The end 6 of the cathode 5, provided with an insulating sheath, is surmounted by a terminal 8 and emerges slightly from the receptacle provided with an iron cover 7 the flat battery shown in figs 3, 4 and 5 comprises a casing 11 of oblong shape and of essentially rectangular section, this' casing 11 being provided with a cover 12 in which it is fitted, the casing 11 and its / cover 12 are made of sheet iron internally graphitized, the ball and its cover constituting the battery anode.
On the bottom of the casing 11 is placed the depolarizer 13 consisting of a mixture of retort charcoal, potassium permanganate and infusory earth, as described for the cylindrical pile. In this depolarizing mass, made porous by the infusory earth contained therein, is embedded iron wool, certain wires of which are in contact with the anode, so as to reduce the ohmic resistance of the depolarizing agent.
A separating membrane 14 is pressed onto the depolarizer layer, which consists of a perforated and slightly convex iron sheet, which is flattened by compression on the depolarizer and the edge of which is therefore firmly pushed against the wall of the housing. The membrane therefore holds the depolarizer firmly and prevents any swelling. In order to minimize the tendency of the depolarizing agent to swell, it is saturated beforehand with a sodium hydroxide solution, of the same concentration as for the electrolyte. The small holes in the membrane are obtained by stamping and have edges or burrs which become embedded in the depolarizer. The surface of the membrane is insulated to prevent contact with the cathode.
The action of the membrane
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
is supported by the electroyte 16 constituted by a mixture of caustic soda, potash or soda sulphate with iron oxide, a starchy material and a milk solution.
In addition to the saponification aiding in the absorption of moisture, the presence of milk in the electrolyte allows the deposition of fat on the cathode 15 and thus protects it against any open circuit attack.
This cathode 15 is arranged above the depolarizing 13 'and its membrane 14 and is surrounded by the electrolyte 16 which fills the receptacle up to the cover 12 The latter is provided with insulating crossbars 17, in order to prevent any contact. between the cathode and the cover. The latter can, after filling the housing 11, be secured to the housing by a so'udure 18. The closure of the cover on the housing can also be made sufficiently waterproof by simply tightening its edge, slightly elastic, for example around a bead of the housing. The junction between the housing and the cover can then be provided with a paraffin tape or an adhesive cellulose tape.
If the covers are not welded to the housings, they can be stored and filled with electrolyte at the time of sale. The cover can also be mounted on its housing by screwing.
The cathode 15 consists of a corrugated or spiral zinc strip and having a broken line in section.
The surface of the cathode thus presents a very large development and the electrolyte is more or less partitioned. One could also use a sponge or wood fibers metallized with groin powder, to form the cathode.
The end 19 of the cathode 15 passes through an interior wall 20 of the case, serving as a reinforcement, and through the wall 21 of the case itself. The passages of the cathode through these walls are isolated, for example by a supply of paraffin.
The wall 21 of the housing constitutes a housing for a bulb 23 and the connection of the wall 21 with the side walls of the casing is constituted by sections 24 and 25
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
inclined and, preferably, slightly curved, so as to form a reflector for the bulb 23. In the housing formed by the wall 21 are also provided two or more spikes 26 arranged in a screw thread for maintaining the thread of the bulb. The latter is therefore screwed fully into the housing, coming into solid contact with the end 19 of the cathode 15.
The tips 26 being made of insulating material or being provided with an insulating layer, the contact between the base of the bulb 23 and the anode 11 is effected optionally by means of a button 27 which slides in the wall of the housing and can contact a strip 26 which is in contact with the base of the bulb but is isolated from the housing. The finish of the flat pile thus formed is obtained by applying a lacquer or an enamel forming an insulator and making it possible to give the pile an irreproachable appearance of finish.
Thanks to the combination of the graphitized iron anode, the iron-wool depolarizer of the milk solution electrolyte and the large-surface cathode, the battery according to the invention gives a voltage of nearly 2 volts at open circuit. and, complemented by the socket and reflector shape of the case, this battery makes an exceptionally practical flashlight.
It is obvious that the main characteristics of the invention do not necessarily have to be applied in combination and that the battery can undergo certain constructive modifications, without departing from the spirit of the invention. Thus, for example, the cover 12 can be constituted by an insulating material provided internally with a sheet iron washer which forms an anode with the housing as described. A very practical assembly of the flat cell according to the invention also consists in connecting the end of the cathode directly to the cover, e.g., by a solder point electrically isolated from the cover. An external terminal is thus obtained, without having to resort to a passage opening
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
in the housing.
In this case the cover will be isolated from the box or will be made of insulating material, eg. e. in bakelite.
