<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
1/ S'il y a lieu, un système planeur destiné à régulariser le feuillard de métal; des fraises ou meules affranchissant les bords du feuillard pour l'amener à un profil reotiligne, et pro- pres à faciliter la soudure ultérieure;
3/ La machine de formage comportant les jeux de galets dé- crits précédemment;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Fig. 11, un axe X supporte :
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

"PROCESS AND MACHINE FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF METAL TUBES"
It is customary to manufacture metal tubes from sheets, by constituting cylinders by means of rolling machines and by assembling the edges either by riveting or by welding. This prooédé offers the drawback of only allowing a fairly limited manufacturing range, because of the difficulties there is in winding sheets to a small diameter; in any case, said method only makes it possible to obtain short pipe elements which must be assembled together. The operations are discontinuous and require a significant specialized workforce, hence an excessive cost price.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
It is therefore preferable to use the known method which consists in winding a metal strip or strip on a mandrel, so as to constitute turns, assembled together, forming the desired tube; however, the winding is necessarily discontinuous, which practically excludes the use of automatic welding as a method of assembling the turns. In addition, the tubes thus obtained necessarily include an extra thickness along the junction line of the turns, from which significant constraints arise for the constitution of the joints.
The present invention, DEGLAIRE system, relates to a new process and a machine making it possible to wind a metal strip or strip without the use of a mandrel, so as to form contiguous turns assembled together by welding; process and machine exhibiting the advantages which will be demonstrated in the description which follows.
The machine is stationary, and the strip progresses so as to pass through a system of rollers arranged so as to deform it and to transform it into turns.
If we call 1 the width of the strip and d the diameter of the tube to be produced, we see in fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings (which represents a turn before winding), that the helices formed by the longitudinal lines of the strip form, with a plane perpendicular to the axis of the tube, an angle [alpha] whose sine is equal to 1 / # d; the pitch of the helix is equal to 1 / cos. [alpha] = p,
For the clarity of the description below, we will consider a strip formed by a fraction of the strip, for example a quarter, of width b, the strip therefore having a width equal to 4 b.
In Figure 2 is plotted e, on a cylinder (shown in dotted lines) whose diameter corresponds to that of the tube to be obtained, a strip of width b, wound with a pitch equal to p: we denote by H the helix formed by the middle line of the strip.
According to the invention, an input roller A is placed outside the cylinder, tangentially to the latter and in such a way that the point of contact of the two surfaces is at the midpoint.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
height of roller A, the mean plane of this roller also contains the tangent to the helium H passing through said point of contact.
An output roller C is arranged in the same way, outside the cylinder, at another point on the propeller H.
Finally, a roller B is also placed in a similar fashion between the rollers A and C but inside the cylinder.
If we now consider the strip of width defined previously, we see that due to the above-mentioned arrangement, we can impart to it a helical movement, of pitch P, on itself, during which the three rollers A, B, C, roll without slipping on the surface of the belt,
In the example chosen, in order to treat the strip over its entire width, there will be four input rollers A, four intermediate rollers B and four output rollers C, respectively juxtaposed.
It is easy to see that if the strip is forced to advance in this system of rollers, by guiding it, just before entering the machine, so that it is in the plane tangent to the cylinder at its point contact with the input roller and that its edges are perpendicular to the axis of this same roller, it will deform and take the desired shape.
According to one embodiment of the invention, shown in FIG. 3, the respective positions of the four input rollers A, the four intermediate rollers B and the four output rollers C are deduced by a translation parallel to the axis of the cylinder, so as to distribute them over the four bands constituting the entire width of the strip. One can, for example, form these rollers by means of spherical ball bearings, so that their outer part can rotate in a significantly inclined plane on the plane of the fixed inner ring, as shown in fig. .
4. Rigid bearings can also be used; they are then mounted on intermediate rings, fig. 5, themselves transferred to the rod supporting the rollers; these rings ensure a suitable inclination of the plane of the roller.
According to another embodiment of the invention,
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
shown in fig. 6, the four input rollers A, the / four intermediate rollers B and the four output rollers C, respectively, have their centers in a plane perpendicular to the mean helio of the strip. The section of the cylinder by this plane is an ellipse of fairly weak curvature, moreover; FIG. 7 shows, on the one hand, the section of the cylinder by one of these planes and, on the other hand, the projection of the rollers (only the outer rollers A have been shown); these rollers are mounted in a manner analogous to those described above.
In the preceding description, the use of rollers with substantially cylindrical edges has been considered; FIG. 8 shows, as a variant, rollers whose edges are tapered with the use of rigid bearings mounted on the same axis.
It is obvious that after passing the strip through the roller system, the strip can resume a slightly smaller curvature than that which it had when passing through the system, so that a tube with a diameter is obtained. greater than that determined geometrically by the position of the rollers; to remedy this, provision is made for the possibility of slightly modifying the relative position of the sets of rollers.
Regular winding is obtained by giving the strip at the entry into the machine an inclination on the perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder substantially equal to the angle [alpha].
In addition, small rollers arranged according to the tranohe of the strip (1st turn) guide it and ensure a well-defined position. By slightly modifying the inclination of the guide of the strip when entering the machine, it is possible to obtain turns tight against each other (by reducing the insulation) or on the contrary leaving between them a slight spacing favorable to welding (by increasing the inclination).
To advance the strip, it is possible, before its admission into the machine, to pass it between two suitable rollers, one of which is a motor and the other provides sufficient pressure to cause adhesion to the first.
Another drive mode is also possible in
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the case where the rollers are as shown in fig. 8; the (set of intermediate rollers B is then accompanied by a set of external rollers pressing the strip strongly against the rollers B, and it is rotated by any suitable means. To avoid slippage liable to cause wear of these rollers B as a result of the differences in radius ;; only a part of them can be driven, the others then being idle on the axis integral with the drive roller (s).
A variant consists in winding a strip, the edges of which are raised beforehand (or during forming), so as to constitute flanged edges, which facilitates welding and embellishes a kind of rib favorable to the strength.
The invention therefore makes it possible to obtain tubes, from a strip, without the use of mandrels, the intermediate rollers having a diameter smaller than that of the tube which cannot be assimilated to mandrels, of which they do not play garlic. - their not the role.
In fact, the complete equipment includes:
1 / If necessary, a glider system intended to regularize the metal strip; cutters or grinding wheels freeing the edges of the strip to bring it to a reotilinear profile, and suitable for facilitating subsequent welding;
2 / A drive system intended to advance the strip, which is guided so as to enter the machine itself with an appropriate inclination.
3 / The forming machine comprising the sets of rollers described above;
4 / A regularizing system having the effect of acting on the turns coming out of the forming machine referred to in 3 / and not yet welded together, so that the profile of the tube, which may have slight variations in its diameter, is brought back to the exact profile sought. This regularizing system can be constituted by a certain number of rollers, at least three, each of them touching the tube so that its generator passing through the point of contact is perpendicular to the propeller which passes through.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
this point on the tube.
5 / An "automatic welding head" system of a known model, assembling the turns together. This welding head can be endowed with a slight mobility in the direction parallel to the axis of the tube, and a finger resting in the small space left free between two neighboring turns guides the welding head so that the electrode has an absolutely preoise position in relation to the space to be welded. of
6 / A guide system / finished tube, which can be constituted by two rollers supporting it and such that the generatrioe of the roller passing through the point of contact is perpendicular to the helix of the tube which passes through this point, so that , during its progression like a screw, the tube rolls without slipping on said rollers.
As a variant of the arrangement shown in FIG. 2, provision is made for the case where the point of contact of the input roller A is brought closer to that of the intermediate roller B; the roller A is then strongly pushed against the roller B.
The strip is thus required to be tangent to the cylinder according to a determined generatrix and to come to touch the last roller or roller out so that it deforms and takes a heliootal shape.
This arrangement is shown in Figure 9, which gives a projection on a plane perpendicular to the axis of the fictitious cylinder.
A is the entry roller,
B the intermediate roller,
Here is the last pebble.
To reduce the force exerted by the strip by deforming at the point of contact of A and B, it may be useful to add a roller F a little forward and to retract the roller A slightly; the latter arrangement is shown in fig, 10.
In practice, only two systems of rollers, causing deformation of the strip close to one and the other of its edges, will generally be sufficient.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
By way of example of an embodiment of a machine, established in accordance with the invention, there is shown in elevation in fig, 11, the main members of which it is composed and in figure 12 the projection of these members. on a plane perpendicular to the axis of the fictitious cylinder, seen from the side opposite to the entry of the strip.
Fig. 11, an X axis supports:
1 / obliquesss rings ss' such as those described above with reference to FIG. 5, on which are mounted rollers B, B 'belonging respectively to each of the two systems .. my rollers.
2 / of the rings on which are mounted, by means of yokes, the rollers C, C '.
3 / a ring @ itself supporting, for the purpose of welding, a pad E to the internal profile of the tube to be obtained,
4 / [gamma] "[gamma]" 'rings on which the rollers D, D' are mounted.
The operation is as follows:
The strip G, pushed at a suitable angle, passes under the rollers B, B '(inside the fictitious cylinder; against which it is applied by the outside rollers A, A' not shown. In addition to the rollers F, F ' whose contact points f, f's have only been shown in fig. il, are located a little in front of rollers A, A '(see figures 9, 10 and 12); so that, directly above rollers B , B ', the strip is found to be embedded.
The strip then encounters rollers P, P '(see fig. 12) whose contact points p, p' only are shown in fig. 11, then rollers Q, Q '(see fig. 12) also represented by their contact points q, q 'fig. 11 and then arrives at the rollers C, C 'against which it is pressed by external rollers C1, C1' (see FIG. 12) exerting a vertical force downwards; the strip then touches the roller R (see fig. 12) represented by its point of contact r, then the roller S (see fig. 12) represented by its point of contact s, then arrives at the rollers D, D 'against which it is pressed by external rollers Di, D1 '(see fig. 12) exerting a vertical force,,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
down.
Between the rollers C'est D is the pad E, defined previously, pushed upwards so as to rest against the tube being formed. This part is used to maintain the molten metal during the welding which is done in its plumb.
For electric welding, the workpiece rests on the tube by slight protrusions, whereby the desired distance (a few tenths of a millimeter) is maintained between the pad and the inner surface of the tube.
If we refer to FIG, 12, we see that the strip is held everywhere and that it necessarily takes the desired shape.
The outer rollers are adjustable.
Thanks to the rollers C, C '(interior) - -Ci' C1 '(exterior) on the one hand and D, D' (interior) - D1, D1 '(exterior) on the other hand, the two edges to assembling are perfectly at the same height, just when the weld, shown in phantom lines with crossed points, is started, which is entirely favorable to obtaining a regular weld.
The relatively long X axis, can under the effect of external forces, mainly that of the rollers D1, Said to take a slight deformation, constant, not times the force 'suitable applied.
Although this deformation is generally negligible, it is compensated for by adjusting the height of the yokes which support the rollers D, D '.
