<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"Articulation joint for assembling machine shafts".
The present invention relates to coupling devices providing an articulated joint between two ar arms, or shaft elements, rotating and being able at the same time to pivot so as not to be in the continuation of one another. , these articulation joints being intended for example for vehicles, in particular for motor vehicles, for machines, for measuring instruments and for similar devices.
The present invention relates in particular to an articulation joint of the type in which the spherical head carried by one of the shafts is connected to a spherical cup, carried by the other shaft, by means of a drive rod which passes right through the device, which is mounted in grooves provided in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
head and the spherical bowl and which is moved in operation in an imperative manner by means of a workpiece in engagement with the two shafts so that its axis is always placed in the bisecting plane of symmetry of the angle that the trees form between them.
In a known articulation joint of the aforementioned type, the drive rod comprises in its middle a reinforcement provided with four faces, held in a square opening, provided in an operating part which moves the processing rod, so as to be able to undergo a translational movement in the direction of its length and in the transverse direction, the aforementioned operating part comprising on both sides of the drive rod studs perpendicular to its axis and by means of which this part d The drive is engaged via ball bearings with the two shafts.
As when the operating parts are arranged in a known manner on the square middle part of the driving rod, the operating part must be able to move in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the shaft as well. drive rod that perpendicular to this axis, the internal spherical surface of a casing surrounding the spherical head and cup was used in this arrangement to center the drive rod, provided with spherical end surfaces, c that is, to maintain it so that its axis passes in each position through the center of the whole system.
With this arrangement, however, it is not possible to obtain sufficient centering of the couplings or articulated joints which must transmit significant rotational forces and which must allow the coupled shafts to rotate in their plane at a large angle, because the thickness of the drive rod is limited, so that its spherical ends do not apply against the inner face of the outer casing except over a limited area.
As a result
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of this circumstance, as well as in. Due to the unavoidable tolerances. in the dimensions of the different parts and the sliding engagement made between the square middle part of the driving rod and the operating part, the driving rod can easily be moved. stuck, during operation, in the external casing by the high pressure forces which occur, which has the effect that the coupling no longer plays its role.
The aim of the present invention is to provide an articulated joint of the aforementioned type, serving for the assembly of two shafts, always achieving safe and jam-free operation, even when the forces transmitted are important and when the reciprocal pivot angles of the shafts. are great.
According to the present invention, the drive rod passing right through the device is executed in its middle in the form of a sphere held in a housing in the form of a spherical cup, provided inside. of the spherical head, so that it can rotate in all directions and that its center is maintained. at the center of the whole system.
Thanks to this arrangement, it is also possible to carry by the. spherical part of the mil @@ u of the driving rod * ne or several other driving rods, which are kept so that their center also coincides with the center of the whole system, but so that 'they can execute with respect to the rod which carries them, as well as with respect to each other, movements of a small amplitude in the plane of symmetry of the shafts.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawings, given by way of nonlimiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the drawings and from the text making it clear.

Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of one embodiment of an articulated joint for shafts according to the present invention and having a driving rod which passes right through the joint. The parts are reproduced in the / position they occupy when the two coupled shafts have not pivoted with respect to each other, that is to say when their axes are aligned along the same straight line.

Fig. 3 is an elevational view with partial section of the member, constituting the rod or the drive shaft of an embodiment of the coupling comprising two drive pins.
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken along line IV-IV of FIG. 3.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to that of FIG. 4 and shows a member forming a drive axis and belonging to one embodiment of a joint with three drive axes.
According to the embodiment shown in FIGS. I and 2, one of the shafts, the shaft 1, carries the spherical head 2 surrounded by a spherical bowl 3 carried by the other shaft 4. The transmission of force from one of the shafts to the the other is effected by means of a drive shaft 5 which passes right through the bowl and the spherical head, while on both ends of the shaft 5 there are cylindrical rollers 6 and 8, among which the inner rollers 6 are engaged with the side walls of grooves7 of the spherical head 2 and open on one side only and of which the outer rollers 8 are engaged with the side walls of grooves 8 closed at both ends and provided in the cup spherical 3,
while these rollers 5 and 6 roll at the same time on the side surfaces with which they are engaged, the rollers 8

rotating, in service, in the opposite direction of the rollers 6. The grooves are covered with a ring 10 forming a kick and surrounding the spherical cup. Instead of cylindrical rollers, it is also possible to use rollers whose outer surface is spherical or conical, and when the rollers are tapered the grooves provided in the spherical head and in the bowl are also tapered.
The middle part 11 of the drive shaft 5 is made in the form of a sphere housed in a bearing or bush, in the form of a spherical cup, so as to be able to turn in all directions, the center of this bearing. spherical coinciding with the center M of the whole system, foolishly that the center of the spherical median part 11 of the rod 5 is constantly held in the center M.
The spherical cup-shaped pad for the spherical part 11 of axis 5 is formed, to the right of line II-II, by a spherical surface 12 provided on the bottom of a cylindrical recess 13 of the spherical head 2, and on the left (the line II-II by a spherical surface 14 on the inner face of an opposite ring I5e The ring 15, which has grooves 16 which correspond to the grooves of the spherical head 2, has been introduced in the cylindrical recess 13 of the spherical head 2 and is held there by means of an elastic ring 17 which engages the spherical head 2, or in another way.
The rollers 6 and 8, arranged so as to be able to rotate on the drive shaft 5, are held in such a way that they cannot move around the exterior by the fact that the exterior rollers 8 are guided on the ring 10. forming a housing, in a hollow 18 convex along a spherical surface and going all the way around. On the contrary, the end surfaces of the drive shaft have no contact with the outer ring 10.
Part 11 of the middle of axis 5 carries an extension 20 in the form of a rod, provided with a spherical end 19 at $
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
means of which the axis is driven in operation in an imperative manner, by the operating part which is in engagement with the two shafts, so that the geometric axis of this driving axis is constantly maintained, according to the imposed condition, in the plane of symmetry bisecting the angle that the two shafts form between them. The operating part is formed by a bar 21, with spherical ends 22 and 23, placed on one of the sides of the geometric axis of the drive axis.
The maneuvering bar 21 is mounted by its spherical end 22 in a cylindrical hole 24 provided inside the spherical cup 3 or of the shaft 4, so that this end 22 can rotate and undergo a translational movement. - tion in this hole 24, at the same time as a spring 25 pushes the rod in the direction of the center M of the system.
The larger diameter spherical end 23 of the operating bar 21 is mounted within a cylindrical hole 26, formed by the interior surface of the. opposite ring 15, so as to be able to rotate and slide inside this end hole 26. of the end 23 of the operating bar 21 is provided with a recess 27 in the form of a funnel, comprising in its bottom a surface 28 against which the spherical end 19 of the extension 20 of the drive shaft bears. In operation, the bar 21 is constantly maintained in engagement with the sphere 19 by the spring 25, so that this sphere 19 can only rotate in its housing.
The open side of the articulation joint is closed by a sleeve 29 made of leather or by a similar member, which is firmly assembled by means of a collar 30 with the casing 10, and by means of a collar 31 with the. shaft 1. By this means, the entire interior volume, filled with lubricant, of the articulation joint of the shafts is closed in a sealed manner both against impurities and lubricant. The lubricant can be introduced or supplemented, for example, through one of the shafts. The holes
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
and conduits to be placed in the various organs for circulating the lubricant have not been shown in the drawing, in order to simplify it.
In order to be able, during assembly of the coupling joint, to pass the ring 10 over the parts of the drive shaft which protrude from the spherical cup, two grooves have been placed in the ring 10. longitudinal 32 starting from the open side. of the ring 10, and offset by 180 (fig. 2), and which open into the circular groove 18. The ring 10 is then placed in place, like a bayonet closure, by passing it through the direction of the axis over the spherical cup 3 through the side of the shaft 4 so that the protrusions of the drive shaft engage in the grooves 32.
Then we turn it around. bagua 90 so that the projecting parts of the drive shaft engage in the groove 18 convex on a spherical surface. So that the spherical cup 3 can be passed over the spherical head 2, xxsxpsossc is executed in two parts which meet by stepped edges in the plane defined by line II-II and which are held by bolts 33 or the like. The bolts 33 can then serve at the same time for fixing the ring 10 on the spherical cup.
In fig. 3 and 4 is shown separately, for simplicity, the member comprising two drive shafts and intended for an articulation joint for two shafts. Indeed, the other members of the coupling are similar to those of figs. I and 2, except that the spherical head 2, the spherical cup 4 and the ring 15 have additional grooves for the second drive shaft, and the ring 10 is provided with additional grooves 32 for passage.
The median part 11, of spherical shape, of the dragging axis 15 'is provided, in this example, with a cylindrical hole 40 perpendicular to the geometric axis of the antrainage axis.

nment, in which is mounted, so as to be able to rotate, the cylindrical part 41. This part 41 in turn comprises a hole 42 through which passes the second drive shaft.
43. The pin 43 can be press-fitted into the part 41, or it can, as in the present example, be secured in the part 41 by a special fastening device which prevents it from perform no longitudinal or rotational movement.
The fixing device consists of a screw in the head 44, screwed into the part 41 and which engages in a hole 45 perpendicular to the geometric axis of the drive shaft,
In order for the second drive axis 43 to be able to perform in service the necessary relative movements with respect to the axis 5 which carries, there is provided in the median part 11, of spherical shape, of the axis 5 an opening 46 through which the second axis 43 passes with sufficient play.
The extension 20, in the form of a rod, which engages with the operating bar 21 can be fixed, in this example, not on the spherical median part 11 of the axis 5, but on the part 41 which carries the second axis 43, the extension
20 can then be in one piece with the part 41, as shown in Fig.3.
The member shown in fig. 5 is intended for a coupling joint of two shafts operating with three drive axes and therefore provided in the spherical head
2 and in the spherical cup 3, six grooves offset by
60.
In the example shown in FIG. 5, the spherical part 11 of the middle of the first drive axis 5 is provided with a cylindrical hole 50 perpendicular to its axis, and in which is mounted, so as to be able to turn, the middle part 51, of cylindrical shape, of the second drive axis
52, while the ends of the pin 52 which engage via rollers with the grooves of the ball cup and the ball head pass through
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
openings 53, offset by 60 with respect to the geometric axis of the drive shaft 5, with sufficient clearance for the shaft 52 to be able to move relative to the axis 5 in service.
The cylindrical middle part 51 of the second axis 52 is also provided with a cylindrical hole 54 having the same axis as the hole 50 and receiving a cylindrical part 55 in which is fixed immobile, for example in the manner shown in Figs. . 3 and 4, the third drive shaft 56. This shaft 56 passes with sufficient play through openings 57 of the cylindrical middle part 51 of the second shaft 52, as well as through the openings 53 of the spherical part 11 of the. center / of the first drive axis 5, in order to be able to move in service with respect to axes 5 and 52.
The assembly unit pivots by the spherical middle part 11 of the axis 5 in the housing 12,14, in the form of a spherical cup, provided in the spherical head 2, so that the center of all the axes is constantly maintained during operation at the center of the entire system.
