<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
EXEMPLEXIX

PATENT OF INVENTION PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF ANTI FUEL
DETONANTS FOR ENGINES.
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of anti-knock fuels for engines.
It has been found that anti-detonating engine fuels can be obtained by adding to a fuel a small amount of a metallic compound (preferably a compound of copper, nickel, iron or cobalt) of an organic substance of the fuel. type:
EMI1.1
in which -IL represents a hydrogen atom or an organic radical with a free bond, which may be occupied by hydrogen, or any other monovalent atom, or an organic radical, while R2 represents
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
an alkyl or aryl group, which may be substituted, and in which the free bond of the -C- carbon atom is either unsaturated joined to the CI group is occupied by hydrogen, or by an organic radical, or joined to the free bond of the radical R1 (cyclic compounds),
as is the case for substances of the type:
EMI2.1
Substances which fall within the scope of the above definition, when added to motor fuels in small quantities, generally increase their anti-knock value considerably.
Under various circumstances the increase in the anti-knock value even considerably exceeds that achieved by adding equal amounts (calculated with respect to the metal) of tetraethyl lead.
An additional advantage which the additions according to the present invention have over a substance such as tetraethyl lead is that they are less toxic.
Those of those substances which are liquids are particularly contemplated and in addition, specifically, compounds of copper and cobalt; nickel compounds and also iron compounds are generally less active.
The substances according to the present invention are quite volatile and can in principle be vacuum distilled without any risk of decomposition.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
In general they are easily soluble in gasoline and they are sometimes miscible with it in any proportion.
Among the compounds according to the present invention

tion, the alkyl-amino-methylene-ketones and the alkyl-amino-methylene-aldehydes (preferably those in which the radicals R1 and R and those which are united to the unsaturated carbon atoms bonded to -Cgroup 0. do not contain more than 6 carbon atoms in all) have been shown to be particularly effective as anti-knock agents.

The compounds added in Examples II-VI and VIII and also, inter alia, the copper compounds of ethyl-amino-methylene-butanone, ethyl-aminomethylene-pinacoline and allyl-amino-methylene-pinacoline, are liquid at room temperature.
The metal compounds in accordance with the present invention can also be applied in the form of their mixtures, or combined with other substances which may or may not have an anti-detonating effect by themselves. These mixtures will be used, for example, when a compound is available which gives a considerable increase in the octane number, but which is solid or rather difficult to dissolve in gasoline. Such a compound will then be used together with a compound which is liquid, in such a proportion that this mixture is also a liquid.

The organic metal compounds employed according to the invention frequently exhibit decomposition phenomena, to a greater or lesser degree, when stored as such or in solution (eg dissolved in gasoline). Not only does this decomposition occur in light, but also, although to a lesser extent, in darkness.
According to the invention, it has been further discovered that this decomposition can be prevented or considerably delayed by mixing the compound metal compounds in question with aryls having at least one primary or secondary amino group combined.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
directly to the nucleus, for example with aniline, toluidine, diphenyl-amine, methyl-aniline, phenylene-diamine, halogenated aniline compounds, for example metachloroaniline, amino-phenols, etc. Aniline and diphenylamine have been shown to be very effective stabilizers.
The amounts of stabilizing agents employed can vary within wide limits. In general, an amount of 5 to 100% by weight, calculated on the basis of the metal compound concerned, is already sufficient. Apart from these stabilizing agents, other substances can be added which either act only as diluents or, in addition, impart special properties to the mixtures.
An example of the latter case is the addition of a small amount of benzene, in order to improve the homogeneity of the mixture of the anti-detonating agent and the stabilizing agent.
EXAMPLE XVIII
The ethyl-amino-methyleneacetone copper compound, a liquid, after standing for two weeks in a glass vial in semi-darkness, clearly showed compositional indices. A solid substance has settled.
The compound, mixed with 10% by weight of aniline, showed, under like circumstances, the same degree of decomposition only after two months.
Diphenylmine was approximately as active as aniline.

EXEMPLEXIX
To the cobaltous compound of ethyl-amino-methyleneacetone was added an equal weight of aniline and the resulting mixture was then exposed to the action of light for 10 days. It has been found that the solution remains clear.
