<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

L'influence du niobium sur les propriétés de résistance à la traction et au choc des aciers envisagés est indiquée par les données des tables II et III, qui montrent la limite élasti- que déterminée expérimentalement en kg par mm2, la charge de rupture en kg par mm2, l'allongement en % sur une longueur de 5 cm et la striction en %, le tout sur des éprouvettes d'essai à la traction normales de 12, 8 mm de diamètre, conformément à la pratique des essais A.S.T.M. ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"PROCESS FOR TREATING STEELS AND RESULTING PRODUCTS"
This invention relates to steels and relates to new and improved steels which are distinguished by new and advantageous properties from an industrial point of view.
The Applicant has discovered that the addition of amounts of niobium between 0.02% and 1% to ordinary carbon steels and to certain special steels with low levels of alloying elements improves markedly and surprisingly. the properties of these steels. An important effect of the addition of niobium is to refine the grain size of the steel, this grain refinement being retained and
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
maintained even at elevated temperatures up to and slightly above the critical scale. Another effect, which is undoubtedly - at least in part - a result of grain refinement, is the improvement in tensile strength afforded to many steels. The resilience is also increased, and this improvement is marked even at temperatures below 0 C.
There is also an increase in the resistance of steels to rust and hot oxidation. The drawing and cold rolling characteristics of steels are improved. The property of steels that they can be hardened by heat treatment is slightly diminished and the steel deforms less when cooled rapidly from high temperatures. The ratio of the elastic limit to the breaking load is increased to an extent which depends on the niobium and carbon contents of the steels, the increase being all the greater as the carbon and niobium contents of steels are weaker.
This invention therefore contemplates a process for imparting a fine-grained structure persistent to the above-mentioned ordinary steels and special steels of low alloying element contents, which process comprises incorporating 0.02% to 1% (preferably 0. 0.05 to 0.25%) niobium to the alloy.
The steels within the scope of this invention include:
A. Ordinary steels whose carbon content does not exceed 1% (and preferably 0.6%) and which may contain: up to 1% silicon; up to 2% manganese; and suitable amounts of niobium, the remainder being
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
composed of iron.
B. Chromium steels, the carbon content of which does not exceed 0.6% and, preferably, 0.4% and which may contain 0.25% to 2% chromium, up to 1% silicon, up to 2% manganese and suitable amounts of niobium, the remainder being iron.
C. Chromium - nickel steels containing, in addition to the elements of chromium steels, from 0.05% to 5% nickel.
The manganese preferably does not exceed 1%.
D. Molybdenum steels containing up to 0.6% and preferably not more than 0.4% carbon, from 0.05% to 1% molybdenum, up to 2% manganese, up to 1% silicon; suitable amounts of niobium, the remainder being iron.
E. Nickel-molybdenum steels containing, in addition to the elements of molybdenum steels, 0.05% to 5% nickel, the manganese content of these steels preferably not exceeding 1%.
F. Molybdenum - chromium steels containing up to 0.6% and preferably not more than 0.4% carbon, 0.25% to 2% chromium, 0.05% to 1% molybdenum, up to 1% silicon, up to 2% manganese, suitable amounts of niobium, the remainder being iron.
Amounts of niobium suitable for addition to these steels in accordance with this invention are those between 0.02% and 1%. It is usually not necessary or desirable to add more than 0.5% niobium and the most useful range is between 0.05% and 0.25%. In general, within the limits of the scales specified above, it will usually be appropriate to use the highest levels.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
high in niobium in steels containing the highest proportions of carbon.
One of the most useful properties of the niobium steels of this invention is that they possess of retaining their normally fine grained structure at elevated temperatures, this property being acquired without adversely affecting other important physical properties. In most cases, the devices heretofore customarily used to refine the grain size of carbon steels and special steels with low alloying element contents have adversely affected the toughness. steels, or (and) have failed to prevent grain growth at elevated temperatures, eg, during fabrication.
The coarsening of the grain is considerably aggravated in a carburizing operation, and in such an operation the addition of niobium to the steel is especially advantageous, as is evident from the data in Table I which gives the grain number, deter - experimentally mined (specification E 19-33 of the ASTM tests), on the surface of a series of steels having undergone a case hardening lasting eight hours, at each of three different temperatures, In each case, the size of the garin of the heart was smaller than that of the surface.

<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
In general, the grain refining effect is approximately proportional to the niobium content up to a certain optimum percentage, which depends mainly on the carbon content of the steel.
The grain refinement of a 0.1% carbon steel (maximum) substantially reaches its greatest degree for a niobium content of approximately 0.1%; a steel with 0.15% carbon reaches this same degree with about 0.15% niobium; 0.35% carbon steel achieves it with about 0.18% niobium; 0.5% carbon steel achieves it with about 0.25% niobium. The presence of chromium, molybdeh or vanadium somewhat decreases these optimum niobium contents. A moderate excess of niobium over the optimum value, if one does not exceed the maximum specified above (1%) will ordinarily not adversely affect the properties of the steel, at least to a significant degree.
The influence of niobium on the tensile and impact strength properties of the steels considered is indicated by the data in Tables II and III, which show the elastic limit determined experimentally in kg per mm2, the breaking load in kg per mm2, the elongation in% over a length of 5 cm and the necking in%, all on normal tensile test specimens of 12.8 mm diameter, in accordance with ASTM test practice ;
as well as the resilience, determined on a normal Izod machine with an initial energy level of 16.6 kilogrammeters and a normal square test piece of 1 cm X 1 cm fitted with a notch at 45

The data in Tables II and III show that in steels containing up to about 0.3% carbon, adding up to about 0.1% niobium increases the elastic limit, the load of failure and the ratio of the elastic limit to the breaking load. The ductility is only slightly changed.
When the niobium is raised above 0.1%, the softening effect of niobium begins to dominate, the elastic limit and the breaking load decrease, and the ductility increases significantly. As the carbon content is raised above 0.3% and further alloying additions are made, the effects of niobium on tensile strength decrease, especially if steels. are heat treated.
It also emerges from Tables II and III that the addition of niobium increases the resilience of steels and that this improvement is greatest in the case of steels rich in carbon and steels containing chromium.
As mentioned above, the addition of niobium to ordinary carbon steels and special steels with low alloying element contents greatly increases their resilience at temperatures below 0 C.
It only takes a proportion of niobium as low as 0.2% to raise the resilience to -100 C at 1.39 kilogrammeters or more.
Table IV contains impact test indications obtained as described for Tables II and III, except that the samples placed under the column header "-78 C" were cooled for approximately one hour to -78. C in a bath of acetone and frozen carbon dioxide before the test; that the samples placed
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
under the heading "-100 C 'were cooled for about one hour to -100% in liquid propane, which had itself been cooled with liquid air, before the test. After cooling, the specimens were quickly transferred from the coolant to the Izod machine and tested, in all cases the transfer and testing took less than ten seconds.

The presence of niobium significantly increases the resistance of these steels to hot oxidation, and,
although niobium steels should not be regarded as resistant to oxidation in the same sense that steels rich in chromium, for example, resist oxidation, the increase in strength will be useful in many applications of these steels. Table V provides information illustrating this effect of niobium.
