<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Improvements in relays.
In the differential protection devices of power transformers, it is known to use the high harmonic currents which arise at the time of switching on, to prevent the untimely operation of the protection relays under the action of the subsequent transient imbalance. when switching on.
The present invention relates to a particular embodiment of such a relay to which is added a device giving it a percentage operating characteristic allowing it to be used both for the protection of transformers with two windings and for the protection of transformers.

protection of transformers with three windings respectively connected to three energy sources.
This embodiment is characterized by the use of a relay of the electrodynamic iron type, the motor element of which, formed of a movable frame in series with the winding or windings of the fixed circuit, is supplied by a current which is a function of the differential current. , while the antagonist element, with a soft iron, comprises three windings supplied by currents proportional to those which pass through the three windings of the transformer to be protected.
The windings of the antagonist element are mounted on three magnetic cores, having a common yoke, but the dimensions of which are such that the mutual influences between the windings are negligible.
The elimination of unwanted operations, when the transformer to be protected is switched on, is obtained by means of a capacitor mounted in parallel with the fixed winding of the motor element and adjusted so that the motor torque is influenced by the frequency and changes sign for a frequency between the nominal frequency of the transformer and double the latter.
The DC component is passed through a very low resistance coil, bypassing all of the two windings of the motor element; this coil, on the other hand, opposes a large reactance to the currents whose frequency is equal to or greater than the nominal frequency of the transformer to be protected.
It is advantageous to supply everything using a current transformer, but this mode of supply

is not limiting of the possibilities of the invention.
Figures 1 and 2 show a particular embodiment, comprising a relay proper and a filter.
It is understood that this form is given only by way of non-limiting example.
The motor element of the relay comprises a movable frame 1 in molded bakelite supporting a coil 2; frame rotated around an axis 3 moves in the air gap of a laminated magnetic circuit 4 which supports two coils 5 and 6 connected in parallel.
The opposing element comprises a movable part 7 in mild steel, pivoted on the axis 3, having the shape of a star with three branches separated by 1200, and a magnetic circuit 8 in laminated sheets; the latter has the shape of an irregular hexagon with three polar cores 9, 10, 11 directed towards the center of symmetry along three axes at 120. Each of these cores carries a coil 12, 15, 14.
The dimensions of the moving iron and the fixed iron are such that the assembly obtained behaves very appreciably like a system with three independent moving elements wedged on the same axis 3. It is therefore possible (fig.3), by supplying each of the three coils 12, 13, 14 by a current proportional to the current flowing in each of the windings 15, 16, 17 of an exchange transformer between three energy sources, obtain of the relay an operation according to a so-called percentage characteristic .
This system is also applicable to a power transformer with two windings; all you have to do is feed one of the coils of the antagonist system with @
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
a current proportional to the current in the primary of the power transformer, and another coil by a current proportional to the secondary current, leaving the third coil unconnected, either to connect any two coils in parallel (Fig. 4), and of them supplied with a current proportional to the secondary (or primary) current, the third coil then being supplied with a current proportional to the primary (or secondary) current.
The contact system comprises a fixed part 18, constituted by a point mounted on an insulating plate, and a movable part 19, constituted by two counter-blades, carrying a blade at the end of which is riveted a disc. metallic that the rotation of the crew comes to apply to the tip of the fixed contact.
The movable contact is mounted on an insulating block 20, serving at the same time as a support for a pallet 21; this moves normally in the air gap of a magnet 22 producing a very intense field.
The "contact-pallet-insulating block" assembly is mounted on the axis 3 to which it is made integral by a set of elastic blades not shown in FIG. 1.
The invention also provides for the threading, by a suitable filter, of the current or of all the currents acting on the motor element described above.
This filter comprises a transformer 23, a self-inductance 24 and a capacitor 25.
The primary of the transformer 23 comprising three taps in order to obtain three percentage values, is supplied by the differential current, the secondary is connected to the terminals of the circuit comprising in series the inductors 5 and 6 and the frame 2 of the element. engine. not
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The self-inductance 24 is mounted directly across the secondary of the transformer 23; its dimensions are such that its impedance for the fundamental frequency is large compared to the impedance of the windings of the motor element of the relay and that its resistance is low compared to that of the motor element.
Its role is to eliminate, when the power transformer is switched on, the influence of the DC component which tends to actuate the relay crew in the direction of the closing of the contacts.
The capacitor 25 is connected to the terminals of the inductors 5 and 6 of the motor circuit, it is adjusted to a value such that the relay has a torque in the direction of the contact closing when the filter is supplied with a current at the fundamental frequency, and a torque in the opposite direction when the power supply is made by a current at a frequency greater than or equal to twice the fundamental frequency.
The capacitance and the relay frame are respectively protected against transient overvoltages by two neon lamps 26 and 27.
