<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Un semblable fonctionnement de l'obturateur est effe c- tué en réglant le mécanisme obturateur dans les différentes mesures indiquées par les graduations de l'échelle 13. Si on le désire, ces graduations peuvent représenter les périodes d'exposition réelles , par exemple xx 1 de seconde ;
500
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

"Improvements to photographic cameras (dark rooms)".
The present invention consists of improvements made to photographic cameras also called photographic dark rooms and its object is to provide means allowing the application of a new and expeditious method of determining the speed of exposure, correct. ., having regard to a particular aperture and / or a light filter chosen for the use.
The invention relates to a camera provided with a variable speed shutter adjustment device comprising an adjustable element which carries a scale for indicating the adjustment positions of the element for controlling the operation of the shutter. shutter so as to reduce periods of exposure which are in geometric progression or so. It is a similar camera which is to be understood by the phrase "a camera of the type described" used hereinafter in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
present description and claims.
According to the present invention, a photographic apparatus of the type described comprises, in combination as part of the structure of the apparatus, a series of interchangeable stops which have opening areas linked between which exactly or approximately in the same way. terms of a geometric progression having a reason comure n in simple relation to that of the progression according to which the exposure periods set by the shutter mechanism are arranged, said stops each carrying a number representative of both the relaticn between the stop in question and a selected stop and the aforesaid simple ror- ation, and a posometer which is calibrated to show for varying lighting conditions,
the shutter settings correctly required to expose a film or plate of a given speed% when said chosen stopper is employed and which has graduations identical to those of the adjustable element of the 1 + shutter adjuster so that a correct reading of the scale for the latter is given by the simple result of a simple mathematical calculation / based on numerical readings obtained by consulting the posometer and a stop which one has decided to use.
Preferably, the opening areas of the interlocking stops are interchangeable / linked to each other exactly or approximately in the manner of the terms of a geometric progression identical to that according to which the times or periods of exposure set by the mechanism da % + shutter are arranged and the number for each stop then directly represents the relation between the stop in question and the stop chosen.
Preferably also a photographic apparatus according to the invention further comprises, in combination as part of the structure of the apparatus, a series of wires.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
very interchangeable in color which in use requires a modification of the exposure period which can be obtained approximately with the progression in which the exposure periods set by the shutter mechanism are arranged, said color filters each bearing a number representative of the above modification and capable of being used in conjunction with digital readings taken from the posometer and a stopper which it has been decided to use.
It has previously been proposed to provide, in or for a photographic camera) a shutter adjustment device. variable speed comprising elements adjustable with respect to one another, the relative setting of which is determined by means of a scale and an index carried respectively by the two elements.
In order to determine the desired scale reading for a given exposure it has been common to adjust one or more scales affecting the form of a slide rule in accordance with the readings or indications taken from a posometer and from stops and filters. interchangeable color s In this case a reading is taken on another scale of the slide rule corresponding to the reading on the scale of the shutter adjuster to which the shutter adjuster must be set to obtain the correct exposure in the conditions specified by the meter and the particular stopper and color filter to be employed.
According to one embodiment, it has been proposed to incorporate the slide rule into the camera and to provide an indicator or index to be brought to the shutter setting position indicated by the figure. mnipulation of the slide rule. This index movement was used to make the actual correct shutter adjustment.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It will be appreciated that correct adjustment of the shutter with the shutter adjuster provided by the present invention is effected as a direct result of a simple calculation from the data taken from the graduations of the scale or from the numbers of the posometer. , the stopper and / or the filter without having to refer to any table and without having to use any form of slide rule (slide rule) as was the case usual so far.
Thus, the graduations or numbers on the shutter speed adjuster, the posometer, the interchangeable stops and the interchangeable color filters are all in direct relation to each other and it is evident from Therefore, that the readings on the scale of the posoneter will not necessarily have any relation to the usual readings of the devices used hitherto and that the indications carried by the other elements of the suit will not cor- respond to those employed usually in photographic records.
In order that the invention may be understood more clearly, a preferably adopted example will be described below with the aid of the appended drawing which shows in perspective a photographic apparatus exhibiting all the characteristics of the present invention. .
The body of the apparatus comprises an outer box or case 1 and telescopically extendable sections 2 and 3, the construction of which corresponds substantially to those described in UK Patent No. 423,035.
In the front part of the inner section 3 are mounted two discs; the edge of one of these is indicated as 4 and the edge of the other will appear in a similar fashion on the opposite side of the lower part of the front section
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
but is not visible in the drawing. These two discs can rotate about a fixed axis eccentric with respect to the optical axis of the lens or objective 5, and the disc 4 has a series of spaced openings of different dimensions which, when the disc is rotated, can be brought, yne at a time, into a coaxial position with respect to the optical axis of the objective.
In a similar way, the otter disc carries a series of color filters which can each be brought at will opposite the objective by a rotation of the disc, and the two discs will be supported in section 3 in a similar manner. to that described in British Patent No. 423,226.
When each aperture is placed coaxially with the objective, an indication is brought into coincidence with an aperture 6 and, in a similar fashion, when each filter is brought to a certain position relative to the objective. , a corresponding indication is brought into coincidence with an opening 7. As has been stated above, each opening and each filter has its own distinctive indication and in the drawing these indications are represented by the numbers 4 and 6 respectively. - ment for the particular opening and filter which are supposed to have been brought into position for service.
A light meter comprising a light wedge or an 8-graduated strip can be removed from or brought back to the lower section of the body of the device and can be observed from the rear of the device through a viewfinder including a glass previous is indicated in 9. The assembly, use and operation of the light meter comprising the 8µ strip are similar to those described in Belgian patent no. 406,003.
For the adjustment of the shutter speeds, a rotating ring 10 is used which carries an index 11 and rotates in relation to a fixed sleeve 12 bearing a scale of musical indications 13. This speed adjustment mechanism
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the shutter is similar to that described in Belgian patent no.406.002.
As the constructions of the individual elements comprising the camera body, the interchangeable stops and filters, the light meter and the shutter speed adjustment mechanism do not by themselves constitute the present invention, they do not. It will not be necessary to describe them in more detail since all the necessary details can be obtained by reference to the prior patents mentioned above. The present invention resides in the use of the adjustable elements when they are provided with distinctive giadnations and markings visible to the operator and correlated in the manner described above.
For example, the graduations of the shutter speed adjuster may be arranged such that to determine the correct exposure the band 8 of the light meter is adjusted in a known manner and the indication that it provides no noted. Then, at the choice of the operator and according to whether he wishes to obtain a sharpness of the details or a sharpness of the contrasts in the object to be photographed, or at the same time the details and the contrasts, the reading made on the posometer band will be multiplied by the values of the indications of the stop and / or the selected filter. This is a simple matter of mental arithmetic. and the result will give a figure representing the one at which the index 11 should be placed on the scale 13.
An exemplary embodiment of a camera in accordance with the proposition made in the immediately preceding paragraph and capable of being employed in the manner described, is provided by a variable speed shutter mechanism capable of operating at different rates which give periods of exposure exactly or approximately in geometric progression.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
A similar operation of the shutter is effected by adjusting the shutter mechanism in the different measurements indicated by the graduations of scale 13. If desired, these graduations can represent the actual exposure periods, for example xx 1 of a second;
500
1 sec .; 1 of sec; 1 of sec; 1 sec; 1 sec; 250 125 64 32 16 1/8 sec; 1/4 sec; 1/2 sec; 1 second; 2 seconds and 4 seconds. These exposure times are approximately geometrically increasing by a factor of 2.
The strip 8 of the light meter is calibrated to give a reading showing the exposure time (ie the shutter adjustment) required for given lighting conditions with use of the light. 'a normal opening or / stop. The normal opening is advantageously represented by the largest available stop. Band 8 will therefore be provided with indications identical to those of scale 13 and when the larger (normal) stop is used, it will suffice to take a reading on scale 8 and set the shutter mechanism to scale 13 according to the reading on scale 8.
The interchangeable stops are themselves arranged to correspond to opening areas having between them a relationship very close to that existing between the terms of a geometric progression. Thus, the normal stop (the largest) can correspond to f / 3.5, a second stop to f / 4.5, a third stop to f / 6.3, and a fourth stop to f / 16. It will be noted that the fourth stop represents the fifth and not the fourth term of the geometric progression of ratio 1/2, and according to which the opening areas are arranged.
The normal stop (f / 3, 5) can be given the distinctive indication l, which, when used as a multiplier for any reading made on the posometer still gives the correct setting.

of the shutter for use with this stopper. The second stop (f / 4.5) can receive the distinctive indication 2, the third, the indication 4, and the fourth, the indication 16.
These indica-

We choose color filters which also require,

Indications 2, and 4, must therefore be applied respectively to the selected color filters referred to here, from
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
so that these indications can be used as multipliers to obtain a representation of the correct setting of the shutter by the method described above.
It is obvious that in order to employ the method just alluded to, the operator does not need to know the technical considerations of the function. stops or filters other than that the precision of detail will be increased by reducing the area of the aperture through which the exposure must be made and that for different subjects different filters are to be preferred. This information can be given to him in the instructions accompanying the camera and therefore it is not necessary for him to know how much real time is needed for the exposure.
The time lapse is automatically adjusted by placing the index 11 on the appropriate indication of scale 13 For this reason, in the example described above, it is not necessary that scales 8 and 13 are graduated in real exposure times obtained when the shutter mechanism is actuated for the various settings of the latter, but can be marked with any numerical indications in the necessary geometric progression. Thus, instead of the exposure times 1/500 secl.1 / 250 sec., Etc., marked on scales 8 and 13 in accordance with the previous example, said scales can bear the indications 1,2,4 , 8,16, .32,64,128,256,512,1024 and 2048, the latter figure corresponding to the exposure time of 4 seconds indicated above.
The light meter and the shutter mechanism carrying scales marked in this way, the indications described above for the stops and the filters are used and, in service, serve as multipliers for the reading made on the light meter in order to obtain a setting of the shutter.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The invention is not limited to a construction such that it requires for the use a mathematical calculation involving a simple multiplication. The different scale marks and the index can be arranged so as to require, for example, a simple addition and these scale marks will represent logarithms, reduced to a suitable base, of numbers capable of being multiplied together. in the manner described above.
Thus, the scales 8 and! 3 can be numbered - in succession 1, 2, 3 etc., each number representing a shutter setting resulted in an exposure time approximately double that of the previous setting in the table. case of the exposure time series referred to above. However, in the present arrangement, the normal stop (that is to say the largest) is designated by 0 and the other stops by 1, 2 and 4 respectively. The memory for each stop is simply added to the indication provided by the light meter to give the correct setting of the shutter.
The number for each stopper represents the number of times the opening area is divided into 2 when that stopper is used, compared to the normal stopper.
Similarly, the color filters referred to above will now be designated 1 for each yellow filter and 2 for the green filter, these numbers being again added to the number obtained from a posometer reading and a stop indication in order to give a correct adjustment of the shutter. ke xxxxxxx
The table below gives another series of marks which can also be used to give a correct adjustment of the shutter by simple addition of the indications provided by the light meter and the stops and by a color filter that can be used. desire to employ.

It will be noted that in the example of the invention tabulated above, the scale marks and the indications n which are liable to be simply added together, to give a correct adjustment of the operator, represent the housings having for base 2, numbers used as marks of scales and indications suggested previously in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
opulent description being suitable for use in a camera when the marks and indications chosen are multiplied between them to give a correct shutter setting.
It is understood that in accordance with the present invention whatever manner is chosen for arranging the scale marks for the posometer and the shutter adjuster $ and for the arrangement of the differentiation indications. stops and filters, the marks and indications will be such that nothing more than a simple calculation which can be done without the aid of a pencil and paper will ordinarily be necessary to determine with the aid of said marks d 'scales and indications correct shutter setting.
It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the particular arrangement of the stops and interchangeable filters described above. Each stopper and each filter can, if desired, be entirely removable and be interchangeable in this sense, or the interchangeable stops can be replaced by an adjustable iris diaphragm which gives a practically equivalent effect. When the term "interchangeable" is used herein applied to stoppers and filters, it is to be interpreted to include such elements when they are interchangeable as shown, or by complete removal, or in the case of stoppers by the use of a adjustable iris diaphragm.
