<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

MO BLLES BODY FAIRING
The present invention relates to the fairing of a moving body (vehicle, projectile, etc.) or of a series of moving bodies (train of wagons, etc.) moving in air or in any fluid, and particularly concerns the rear or side fairing of these moving bodies.
The invention more especially consists in providing at the rear or on the sides of the movable body or bodies, and even at the front, a sheath preferably of flexible or elastic and partially deformable material, which can be filled in motion. by the fluid in which the mobile moves, said fluid being maintained by any suitable means at the desired pressure so that the sheath provides satisfactory fairing of the mobile. Such a device has the advantage of taking
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
itself a form of least resistance by submitting itself exactly to the external and internal forces which request it and avoiding any formation of eddies.
The device can be armed internally and locally to facilitate its installation or its development, or give it in advance an invariable or substantially invariable form which would be judged more suitable for its use.
In principle, the sheath comprises a front part, preferably rigid, which ensures a deviation and a judicious orientation of the fluid, and behind this rigid part, @ a part which can be deformable flexible or elastic, supported! or not by reinforcements, which ensures the best recovery of the energy of the external fluid at all speeds, that is to say, it allows the fairing device to take a form of as low resistance as possible at all speeds, or substantially such.
The device has the advantage of being folded up or developed at will so that the mobile or the vehicle, or the train of vehicles, can operate in all uses without disturbing the operating conditions, for example the maneuver of the couplings, despite the proximity of other vehicles, or even without unnecessarily increasing the size of a projectile, such as an airplane bomb before launching. In this case, while reducing the resistance to forward movement, it can replace the tail unit, by rear guiding the air that is allowed to pass between the bomb and the sheath, all around; etqu'on let out through the open bottom of the sheath.
The sheath ensuring the fairing can be combined with deflector devices, rigid or semi-rigid, placed at the front of the mobile body, also at the rear around said sheath, to increase its efficiency or reduce it, if it applicable, the dimensions. Deviators can be executed in an elastic body, but of course some
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
parts may be rigid to withstand. external pressures which could cause deformations contrary to the aim pursued.
The rear elastic part of the sheath, which can be filled with the external fluid, or with any other fluid, is maintained at a determined pressure, this pressure being able to be chosen as a function of the speed of the mobile and variable with it. The filling can be effected by a scoop, or nozzle which draws the external fluid externally driven by a movement relative to the mobile, or by any suitable mechanical means. The sheath may also receive intake orifices and exhaust orifices making it possible to adjust, automatically or not, the desired pressure inside, in the manner of an air sock.
This is how the sheath can be fitted with an automatic valve adjusting the pressure as a function of the speed.We can also leave a constant opening at the rear of the sheath, this opening allowing the exhaust, and in this In this case, the admission of the filling fluid is adjusted. On the contrary, one can keep the intake constant and vary the dimensions of the exhaust port according to the speed.
When the sheath which is the subject of the invention is applied to the rear of an oar, it may be useful to limit its movements under the action of side winds, In this case it is necessary to arm more or less rigidly the sheath, especially as the sheath must be folded when the rear part of the train becomes the front part. The reinforcement can be used to aid in folding. These reinforcements, or any other means, also make it possible to avoid that during a journey on a curve or by a side wind acc 'entu6, the sheath is not offset externally on the other track where. it could cause clashes with another train.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In general, when the device is applied to a set of railway wagons, a sheath made of rubberized canvas or oiled canvas, or of solid blades, telescopic or not, etc., is placed at each end of the train. and this sleeve can be folded very easily against the bottom of the car so as not to interfere with the attachment of the motor vehicle when the sleeve is located at the front of the train. Sheaths can also be provided at the rear of each wagon and serve for the lateral fairing of the train by protecting the intervals; between wagons. The filling of the ducts can in this case be carried out either by means of a nozzle or of any lateral opening as has been said above, or even by using the compressed air pipes intended for the brakes.
The exterior surface, and even the interior surface, of the sheath may be covered with any coating capable of reducing the friction of the fluid in the sheath. The material constituting the sheath can be a plastic, flexible, transparent, of the kind used in aviation to protect shelters, and thus the sheath does not interfere with visibility.
These sheaths, flexible or not, associated with a deflector of the type described in the Applicant's external patents, supply the aerial body created by the deflector and prevent its premature destruction, or give it any desired shape in any desired location.
Inside the sheath following the diverter, which supplies it and guides it, there can be any body to be protected or adjusted (mobile, radiator, motor, etc.), whether or not it bears the diverter assembly and sheath.
The description which will follow with regard to the appended drawings given by way of example will make it easier to understand the manner in which the invention can be implemented.

Figs. 1 to 6 show in schematic section the movable bodies provided with several variants of the fairing device object of the invention.
Fig. 7 shows in schematic section an interval between wagons to which the side fairing object of the invention has been applied.
In fig. 1, the mobile body a, the front of which is shaped in any suitable way, moves in the surrounding fluid in the direction of arrow A. This body a is provided at the rear of the sheath b which comprises a scoop, or nozzle, which draws from the outside, due to the movement, a portion of the surrounding fluid which is sent into the sheath b to create the desired pressure therein. An exhaust port d is provided at the rear of the duct b. In fig. 2, the movable body a is equipped at the front with deflector devices t which may be of the type described in the prior patents of the Applicant. At the rear, there is provided a fairing device b, flexible, but provided with fittings e, an air pump, or any other mechanical device, injects at f into the device b the fluid necessary to give it the desired shape.
In the case of fig. 3, the sheath b is held by a central rod g. The anterior edge of the sheath b extends slightly beyond the profile of the body a, and, through the slit thus formed, fluid penetrates, the speed and nearness of which are regulated by suitable deviating surfaces h placed around the rear of the movable body as seen in the figure.
In fig. 4, the fairing effect of the sheath b is reinforced or supplemented by a deflector ring i, in the form of a torus, which controls the circulation of the fluid around the sheath b and helps to give it the desired shape. this deviating crown can be rigid or semi-rigid.
This device, with or without crown, replaces advantageous *. ment a tail for a bomb. A diverter placed
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
in front of the front opening, as in the case of fig. 3, can be used, automatically or not.
Fig. 5 shows an aircraft bomb, at the front of which the suitable deflector surfaces t have been arranged, and which comprises at the rear a deflector ring i similar to that of FIG. 4, which crown controls the flow of fluid around the rear profile of the bomb.
This arrangement makes it possible to eliminate the stabilizers generally used.
In the case of fig. 6, the movable body a is pierced with an axial hole j into which penetrates the fluid which feeds the sheath placed at the rear, said sheath @ mportant or not a discharge orifice d.
Finally, fig. 7 shows the application of the invention to an interval between wagons. The previous wagon a is fitted at the rear with the sheath b1 carried by a frame fixed to the wagon 1: .. Part of the air enters between the sheath b1 and the wagon and dome in the sheath the desired shape if this sheath is not rigid, which can be, thanks to which vortices at the height of the coupling are avoided. At the rear of the set of wagons, the last wagon comprises a sheath b of the type described in gregard of FIGS. 1 to 6.
