<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
La fig. 1 est une vue en coupe verticale prise à tra- vers le carter à manivelles d'un compresseur montrant une par- tie de deux cylindres utilisés;
La fig. 2 est une vue fragmentaire agrandie d'un dis- positif de joint ou garniture d'étanchéité montrée sur la fig.l;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Improvements to sealing devices or gaskets for shafts and similar mechanical elements.
This invention relates to diaphragm type seal or packing devices and particularly, although not exclusively, relates to sealing devices employed to prevent leakage of liquid and / or gas between a rotating member and a member. fixed relative to the rotating element.
The invention applies in particular, although not exclusively, to compressors for refrigeration systems. When small compressors are used in these systems, the pressure in the crank housing is generally equal to or substantially equal to the suction pressure of the refrigerant circuit. This is advantageous, since the suction pressure is the low pressure of the refrigerant circuit, so that the tendency to leak around the crankshaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
is reduced to a minimum.
A serious drawback, however, results from the fact that with the commercial refrigerants in use today, and especially when operation is provided by intermittent operation of the compressor, the suction pressure of the system may at times be less than the minimum. atmospheric pressure, and at other times, be higher than atmospheric pressure. In some systems, regulators intended to vary the temperature through the refrigerant circuit cause changes in the suction pressure with a similar result.
In diaphragm seals constructed heretofore, such a reversal of the differential pressure acting on the seal would create abnormal conditions where the fluid pressure acting on the diaphragm would have the effect of reducing the sealing pressure acting on a washer. Sealing, so that one or more load springs to maintain the sealing pressure were commonly employed whenever differential pressure was expected.
When employing a load spring to overcome the abnormal conditions just mentioned, under normal conditions an exaggerated sealing pressure occurs, and the main object of the present invention is to provide a seal or packing device. improved sealing with a view to avoiding the use of the aforementioned load spring (s), this packing device serving at the same time to maintain an appropriate seal under the abnormal conditions specified above.
According to the invention, the seal or packing device comprises two movable members with respect to one another arranged to be kept in intimate contact.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in order to ensure the required tightness, one of these members being actuated by an elastic or flexible diaphragm comprising a relatively fixed edge and a device providing a support which reacts on the diaphragm between the fixed and movable edges of the diaphragm. the latter, the diaphragm being constructed in such a manner and the support being arranged relative to it in such a way that when the pressure is such that the diaphragm is pushed towards the support, the latter divides the diaphragm in two surfaces which generate opposing forces by which the aforementioned members are maintained in sealed engagement as required.
According to the preferred embodiment of the invention, the diaphragm comprises a flat ring or flat ring of which the outer circumferential part is fixed or clamped in place, while the inner or movable part is attached to a sealing ring cooperating with a shoulder, ring or other sealing surface with which, for example, a crankshaft is provided, and the bearing providing device is in the form of an annular rib which is arranged so as to impart slight initial flexion at the diaphragm, which produces the sealing pressure on this member or these rings due to the inherent elasticity of the diaphragm. This pressure constitutes the normal sealing pressure exerted on these members, which preferably satisfies all the operating conditions.
If we assume that the differential pressure acting on the diaphragm is reversible, as mentioned above, and if this differential pressure pushes the diaphragm back from the fulcrum, the entire surface of the diaphragm suffers the pressure in the direction corresponding to tightness, but before the differential pressure has moved the diaphragm away from the fulcrum (which is not envisaged), the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The total sealing pressure exerted on the two members is not significantly increased since the bending stress is simply transferred from the fulcrum to the differential pressure.
When the differential pressure is reversed, so that the diaphragm is pushed towards the annular support, the support divides the diaphragm into two annular surfaces which generate opposing forces ensuring the sealing pressure between the rings. The ideal condition would be that the pressure acting on these two surfaces forces them to substantially equilibrate each other, and in this case the sealing pressure exerted on the rings would not change. We can formulate this condition by saying that the effective areas are substantially equal to each other, although in practice the real areas differ significantly from each other.
However, for the purpose of sealing, it is considered preferable that the fluid pressure acting on the diaphragm at the outer circumferential part thereof predominates slightly, so that the sealing pressure exerted is increased. rather than diminished.
The object is to produce a single diaphragm whose sealing pressure is substantially equal to the pressure generated by the flexion of the diaphragm during assembly of the device and is substantially independent of the fluid pressure. However, the effect produced by the fluid pressure, regardless of the direction in which the differential pressure acts, is favorable to maintaining the seal.
Although the invention is primarily intended to provide a seal or gasket between two elements rotating relative to each other, for example between the crank shaft and the crank housing of a compressor or ma -
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
China analogous, it is clear that the invention can also be applied to cases where the displacement between the elements is not strictly rotary and it is irrelevant whether both or only one of the moving elements one relative to each other are in motion. In the exemplary embodiment of the invention described below, the diaphragm is fixed to that of the two concentric elements and rotating relative to each other which is on the outside.
Obviously the reverse arrangement can be used and, since the tightness is ensured regardless of the direction in which the sealing pressure acts, it is obvious that the construction can also be reversed at this point. of view.
In order to make the invention fully understood and to facilitate its implementation, it will be described below in more detail with reference to the appended drawings which show it by way of example in its application to a single-stage compressor. full effect.
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the crank case of a compressor showing part of two cylinders in use;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of a gasket or packing device shown in FIG. 1;
Fig. 3 is a front view of a seal ring used in the device and illustrating a detail of the invention.
In Figure 1, the crank housing 6 is provided with a rear bearing 7 and a front bearing 8 supporting a shaft 9 with two cranks.
Passages 11 and 12 are judiciously reserved for the passage of the lubricating oil in which the crankshaft 9 is bubbling as well as the sealing ring described below.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The block 13 comprises two cylinders in which the pistons 14 work, connected by the connecting rods 15 to the crankshaft 9, the ends 16 and 17 of which turn respectively in the bearings 7 and 8. Only the end 17 of the crankshaft. The crankshaft extends to 18 and comes out of the housing 6.
As a result, the internal differential pressure between the housing 6 and the atmosphere acting on the cross-sectional surface of the shaft passing through the seal will develop a force acting on the shaft in an axial moving direction. inward (to the left) when atmospheric pressure predominates or outward (to the right) when the pressure inside the casing 6 in turn predominates.
The shaft 9 necessarily has a very slight axial play between the bearings 7 and 8.
The shaft 9 has a thinned portion 18 which passes through the seal described below and outside the latter terminates in a cone as indicated at 19 to receive a flywheel 21 by which it is driven. The flywheel 21 is retained by a key 22 and a crenellated nut 23, screwed onto the end of the shaft 9. The components thus described and generally known in this type of machine are completed by a seal or gasket device characterizing more particularly the present invention.
Encircling the thinned part 18 of the crankshaft 9 is disposed against the shoulder between the journal 17 and the part 18, a sealing ring 24 which is driven with the shaft 9 by means of a key. 25 spherical embedded in part in a corresponding notch hollowed out in part 18.
The reason we use the ring 24 as
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
a separate unit of the shaft 9 is that its outer sealing face can be finished with much greater precision than is possible with a shoulder formed integrally with the shaft 9.
Further, the ring 24 may be made of a selected special material which would not necessarily be suitable for the construction of a crankshaft; it can be treated separately, for example hot, without influencing the shaft 9.
In the example shown, the ring 24 is made of hardened and polished steel.
The practice is to place the ring 24 on part 18 of the shaft 9 and against its shoulder so that a hermetic seal is provided between the ring and the shaft.
Slidable axially on the part 18 of the shaft 9 is a. second relatively flexible seal ring 26, the inner face of which is in close contact with the outer face of the ring 24; the contact of these two faces produces the hermetic seal. In order to ensure the lubrication of the two faces, the ring 26 is provided with a series of superficial cavities 27 (fig. 4), arranged in a spiral, the outermost of which intersects the outer periphery of the ring, so that it takes oil in passage 12. The cavities or cells 27 will fill one after another with oil so that a film of lubricant is constantly maintained between the contacting surfaces of the rings. 24 and 26.
The ring 26 immobilizes a flat diaphragm 28, made of resistant material (FIG. 3). This diaphragm is preferably constructed of suitably heat treated steel, it is held in place by a nut 29 screwing onto a reduced diameter portion of the ring 26, so as to force the diaphragm 28 against the shoulder formed. on the ring 26.
To allow adjustment of the position of the diaphragm 28 relative to the inner face of the ring 26,
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
interchangeable shims 31 and different thicknesses make it possible to compensate for the progressive wear of the rings.
The outer periphery of the diaphragm 28 is rigidly fixed against an annular seat 32, established in the housing 6 of the crankshaft, the fixing being made by means of a cover disc 33 fixed by bolts 34.
The covering disc 33 is provided with a circular relief 35 forming a fulcrum which bears on the outer side of the diaphragm 28 somewhat closer to the ring 26 than to the seat 32 and produces a slight initial flexion of the diaphragm 28 sufficient to develop a suitable sealing pressure between ring 26 and ring 24 when the differential pressure acting on said diaphragm is zero.
For the adjustment, interchangeable wedges 36 are interposed between the periphery of the diaphragm 28 and the seat 32, as are the wedges 31 arranged towards the center of this same diaphragm.
As ordinarily constructed, the circular rib 35 which serves as a fulcrum still allows atmospheric pressure to act on the entire exterior surface of diaphragm 28 at all times.
In order to make it clearer in the drawing that the outer surface of the diaphragm 28 is subjected to atmospheric pressure through the opening 38 of the disc 33, an orifice 37 has been shown which can be used, (although its employment is not strictly essential to achieve the desired result.) The inwardly projecting flange 38 of disc 33 is used in conjunction with the gutter flanges 39 (Fig. 1) of flywheel 21 to collect the inwardly flowing disc. oil which may seep through the seal and proper connections (not shown in the drawings) will be made as follows.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
to drain this oil thus recovered in reservoirs or return it to the sump 6.
When there is no differential pressure between the shaft housing 6 and the atmosphere, the rib 35 causes a slight flexion of the diaphragm 28 and the latter being elastic will develop a necessary normal sealing pressure. sary preventing any leakage.
When atmospheric pressure predominates over the internal pressure of the crankcase, shaft 9 is pushed inward (to the left) by the prevailing atmospheric pressure.
Under these conditions, the flexion of the diaphragm by the annular fulcrum is slightly reduced but the sealing pressure between the rings 26 and 24 is maintained and even increases by the differential pressure of the fluid which acts on the entire surface of the diaphragm. diaphragm 28.
When the interior pressure of the shaft housing 6 predominates over atmospheric pressure, the shaft 9 moves slightly outward.
This displacement ensures a slight increase in the flexion of the diaphragm 28 on the circular support rib 35.
The actual area of diaphragm 28 exposed to the predominant interior pressure on the exterior side of rib 35 is greater both radially and circumferentially than (and here substantially exceeds) the actual area inside rib 35, so that the outward bending of the diaphragm 28 on the outer side of the rib 35 sufficiently deforms the diaphragm 28 so as to push the inner circumference of the diaphragm and consequently the movable ring 26 inward (left side). ).
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
The difference between. The actual surfaces of the diaphragm outside and inside the support is greater than the difference in the opposing forces that are developed. This is because the outer edge is pinched rigidly and the outer part of the diaphragm has very little latitude of movement.
The expression "effective area" is used to define the area as a function of the force developed. Two annular surfaces of a diaphragm approximately equal in effective area (ie having equal force-generating properties) can differ markedly in actual area.
The expression "annular" applied to the rib or support does not imply that it is necessary to use as support a continuous or closed ring. It suffices that the support rib or its equivalent is capable of causing a substantially uniform annular bending of the diaphragm, although an uninterrupted rib is preferable.
The use of a single diaphragm subject to a reversible differential pressure in conjunction with a backing point to develop a one-way seal pressure in a gasket or packing device is susceptible of many applications. Consequently, it goes without saying that the shapes, the dimensions, the materials used may vary according to the applications, without departing from the scope of the invention.
