<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
de finesse, ce, dans des conditions voulues et calculées de natures, de qualités et de quantités correspondantes aux caractéristiques particullières de chacune des matières de fabrication, et des produits à obtenir, savoir : a) plasticité, températures de cuisson et de fusion de la terre plastique; b) pouvoir calorifique du combustible ;
1 La terre plastique est préalablement séchée et réduite en poudre plus :ou moins fine (suivant sa nature);
2 Le combustible préalablement réduit en poudre, en granules ou petits morceaux, aux degrés de finesse né- cessaires, est incorporé à la terre, soigneusement dosé, réparti uniformément et intimement mélangé avec elle ; cecombustible consiste en charbon, coke, sciure de bois, tourbe ou tous autres ayant un pouvoir calorifique appéciable; la nature et la quantité du combustible à incorporer en mélange avec la terre plastique sont déterminées en tenant compte : a) de la pororsité et de la densité imposées pour les pro- duits fabriqués;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
porter la masse à la température de cuisson sans la dépasser, et que, d'autre part, son emcombrement dans la masse laissera après volatilisation une quantité de vides et de cavités cor- respondantes à la porosité et à la densité imposées pour le produit fabriqué) ;
3 Après un dosage et un mélange de la terre et du combustible, très soigneusement effectués à sec, ce mélange est humidifié par l'adjonction d'une quantité plus ou moins forte d'eau, pulvérisée ou vaporisée, d'une manière uniforme dans toute la masse du mélange, de manière à ranimer la plasticité de la terre contenue dans le mélange pour que la consistance du mélange soit plus ou moins rnaléable pour cor- respondre à la puissance des efforts auxquels le mélange sera soumis lors du moulage des produits, suivant les différents modes de fabrication, que ce soit par pressions, pilonnages, laminages,étirages ou tous autres moyens de travail appro- priés uax formes des produits à obtenir ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

PATENT "Porous construction material, light and resistant, based on clay".
We have already tried to produce a porous, light and resistant material, based on clay, by incorporating the fuel necessary for its cooking, -which was eliminated or scarified by combustion- and materials intended for. increase the strength of the finished material. However, the results obtained were not favorable, because the manufacturing process employed was defective.
Hitherto, in fact, the mixing process was carried out by a wet method, which prevented a uniform distribution of the fuel in the mass, and, consequently, a uniform distribution of the cavities or pores, due to its volatilization or to its acorification.
The object of the new production process is precisely to obtain, practically and economically, terra cotta products, which are very porous, very low in density and incombustible; it consists in introducing into the plastic clay of manufacture, before the molding, to incorporate it, to distribute it there and to mix it very uniformly and intimately, a large quantity of fuel necessary for the cooking, previously reduced to an adequate degree
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
fineness, this, under desired and calculated conditions of natures, qualities and quantities corresponding to the particular characteristics of each of the manufacturing materials, and of the products to be obtained, namely: a) plasticity, firing and melting temperatures of the plastic earth; b) calorific value of the fuel;
c) porosity and density imposed for the manufactured products.
The fuel, during cooking, volatilizes or is reduced to ashes and a multitude of voids, cavities or cells are thus produced in the mass, which reduce its density accordingly.
The new manufacturing process mainly comprises the various successive operations described below:
1 Plastic soil is dried beforehand and reduced to a more: or less fine powder (depending on its nature);
2 The fuel previously reduced to powder, granules or small pieces, to the necessary degrees of fineness, is incorporated into the earth, carefully dosed, distributed uniformly and intimately mixed with it; this fuel consists of coal, coke, sawdust, peat or any other having an appreciable calorific value; the nature and quantity of the fuel to be incorporated mixed with the plastic earth are determined taking into account: a) the pororsity and density imposed for the products manufactured;
(b) the firing and melting temperatures of the plastic earth used; c) the calorific value of the fuel (in certain cases, several fuels of different types can be used in a mixture, in suitable proportions, to obtain an average appropriate to the needs of the manufacture, i.e. this mixture will be constituted in such a way that, on the one hand, its average calorific value will be sufficient to
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
bring the mass to the firing temperature without exceeding it, and that, on the other hand, its size in the mass will leave after volatilization a quantity of voids and cavities corresponding to the porosity and density imposed for the manufactured product );
3 After a metering and mixing of the earth and the fuel, very carefully carried out dry, this mixture is humidified by the addition of a more or less strong quantity of water, pulverized or vaporized, in a uniform way in the whole mass of the mixture, so as to revive the plasticity of the soil contained in the mixture so that the consistency of the mixture is more or less variable to correspond to the power of the forces to which the mixture will be subjected during the molding of the products, according to the different manufacturing methods, whether by pressure, pounding, rolling, drawing or any other appropriate working means uax shapes of the products to be obtained;
4 After molding, depending on the degree of moistening, the products enter the oven for baking, with or without first undergoing a more or less prolonged period of drying,
The fuel necessary for cooking having been incorporated almost entirely in the mass, before the molding of the products, it will suffice to add to the oven, for cooking, a small quantity of fuel with long flames to accelerate and push the advance ment. cooking.
The new manufacturing process makes it possible to obtain products of the most diverse shapes: bricks, blocks, plates, etc., etc., solid and hollow, and possibly internally reinforced. It makes it possible to obtain economically very regular products of homogeneous shape, composition, well packaged and of very low density; for example, from this last point of view, if we suppose a mixture comprising half of plastic earth and half of fuel, this plastic earth weighing in the cubic meter 1.400 @ is a density
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
of 1.4, the density of the fired product will be halved and will be more than 0.7 except for a few hundredths resulting from the few fuel residues which will not have been volatilized.
This density of 0.7 is understood for solid products, but when it comes to hollow, perforated products, for example having an average of 30% hollow, the density will be reduced to 0.5.
For certain products of special shapes, the re-distance of the material to the tensile forces can be reinforced in the areas where these forces require it, by the incorporation, during the manufacture, in the molding, of adequate reinforcements.
