<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

"Improvements made to engines running by injection, in particular to those having to operate at variable altitudes".
The invention relates to engines operated by injection, and it relates more particularly, because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest, but not exclusively, among these engines, those having to be able to operate at varying altitudes, for example those for driving aircraft propellers.
Its aim, above all, is to make the said engines * such that they respond better than hitherto to the various desiderata of practice.
It mainly consists of arranging in such a way the engines of the genre in question. that the control linkage making it possible to adjust the quantity of fuel injected per cycle also ensures the control of means acting on the input of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
air supply to the engine, these means being the same, at least for certain engine speeds, the mass of air entering said engine for a determined time remains substantially proportional to the mass of fuel injected - at the same time.
It consists, easily apart from this principle provision, of certain other provisions, which are preferably used at the same time, and which will be discussed more explicitly below; Bile more particularly aims at a certain mode of application, as well as certain embodiments, of said provisions; and it is still more particularly aimed at new industrial products. engines of the type in question comprising application of said provisions, specific elements specific to their establishment, as well as fixed or semi-rigid assemblies comprising such engines.
And it can, in any case, be well understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the accompanying drawing, which complement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
FIG. I of this drawing shows, schematically, an aircraft engine established in accordance with the invention.
Figures 2, 3 and 4, finally, show three diagrams for explaining the operation of injection pumps likely to be used on this engine,
According to the invention, and more pattioulellement according to that of its modes of application, as well as those of the embodiments of its various parts, to which it seems that preference should be given, proposing, for example , to establish an internal combustion engine, functioning by injection, to operate the propeller of an aircraft, one does it as follows or in a similar way.
The whole of this engine, with the exception of its supply systems, both in fuel and in air, is made up by using all appropriate embodiments,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This is how we can, for example, arrange said engine so that it functions according to the two-stroke cycle or according to the four-stroke cycle, its distribution being able to be provided by valves, by lights or any other. appropriately,
As regards, now, the fuel supply system to be included in the engine to be established, we have, for example, recourse, for each engine cylinder, to an injection pump (2) supplying an injector (3) and actuated by a cam (4), and means are provided, actuated by a linkage (5)
suitable for making it possible to vary the quantity of fuel injected per cycle, whereby the speed of the engine can be adjusted since the latter, all other things being equal, increases when the quantity of fuel injected itself increases and vice versa ,
One can, of course, establish the aforesaid means in any suitable manner, for example and as shown in the drawing, by providing the injection pump (2) with a piston (6) capable of being displaced by rotation. around its axis and the head of which is, as is known, shaped such that the quantity of fuel injected depends on the angular position occupied by the piston in its cylinder.
Thus it is possible to provide, in the cylinder of the pump, a single orifice (7) communicating with a reserve of fuel and to bring to the head of the piston an element (8) sliding in a sealed manner in the cylinder. of the pump and delimited upwards and downwards by two ridges, at least one of which is oblique with respect to the axis of the cylinder. Thus, the discharge takes place only during the time when the orifice (7) is covered by the zone between the two aforesaid ridges, a zone whose height is different for each of its generatrices.
The start of injection takes place, in fact, when the piston rises, at the moment when the upper edge closes the orifice (7), while the end of the injection takes place at the instant when this orifice is uncovered by the lower edge because, from this moment, the delivery chamber of the pump communicates with the orifice (7) by a
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
conduit passing through the piston head (6).
The aforesaid area may, for example, develop in one of the shapes shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4. It can be seen that, if the piston (6) is rotated on itself in the direction corresponding to the arrows in said figures, the quantity of fuel injected per cycle will increase.
It is known that the rotation of the piston (6) can be ensured by a rack (9) engaged directly by the linkage (5) and meshing with a pinion (10) wedged on the base of the piston.
Advantageously, provision is also made for means suitable for advancing, in the cycle, the period of the injection as the speed increases. These means can be established in any suitable manner and are advantageously actuated at the same time as the linkage (5) so that the injection is advanced when the quantity of fuel injected increases and vice versa:
If the type of rotary piston pump just described has been adopted, it will suffice, for example, to achieve this result, for the center line of the aforesaid zone to go up (fig. 4) when the piston rotates in the direction causing an increase in injection.
It would also be possible (FIG. 3), by analogous means, to cause the rotation of the piston to simultaneously cause a certain advance of the start of the injection and a less delay in the end of the latter.
As regards, now, the air supply system to be included in the engine to be established. it is made to include a throttle (II) disposed on the suction pipe of the engine, and this throttle is arranged in such a way, which is connected to the wheelhouse (5) in such a way that , at least for certain engine speeds, the mass of air entering said engine for a determined time always remains proportional to the mass of fuel injected during the same time,
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
If we assume, first of all, that the ambient pressure remains constant and equal to a value P, we can see that, knowing the law according to which the mass of fuel injected per unit of time varies when the linkage (5 ) is moved,
we for. ra, in each particular case, determine, either experimental. ment, or by calculation, the way in which the throttle (II) must be constituted and must be connected to the wheelhouse (5) so that the above-mentioned condition is fulfilled,
Thus, we will be able to maintain at the optimum value (which will depend among other things on the nature of the fuel) the ratio of the mass of fuel to the mass of air, whereby combustion will always be carried out satisfactorily, whatever or the marohe regime and, in particular, incomplete combustion and exhaust fumes will be avoided.
Of course, the invention may find its application whether or not the engine to be established must be provided with a supercharger. If there is such a compressor, this member (12) can be placed either upstream or, better still, downstream of the throttle (II).
Assuming, now that the ambient pressure must be able to vary, which is the case for aircraft engines, the device just described would cause an increasing excess of fuel as the pressure di- would decrease below the pressure P for which the device was established and an increasing lack of fuel as the pressure increases above this pressure P,
To avoid these drawbacks, in accordance with the invention, recourse is had to means such that the pressure, upstream of the throttle (11), is kept substantially constant, whether or not a compressor (12) is , planned .
One can, for this purpose, use, among other devices,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
that shown in the drawing and which comprises a valve (13) driven by a manometric capsule (14) arranged in a chamber (15) where, thanks to a communication tube (16), the pressure prevailing between the valve (13) prevails and the choke (II),
Thus, depending on whether this pressure decreases below the pressure P that it is desired to maintain upstream of the throttle (II), or exceeds it, the capsule (14) deforms in one direction or the other and moves the valve (13), either in the closing direction or in the opening direction, which restores the pressure P.
Of course., Between the cap (14) and the valve (13), a servomotor of any suitable type, for example at oil pressure, will advantageously be provided, leaving the capsule to act as a guide member but taking all the necessary effort to operate the valve (13).
As a result of which a device has been produced such that, as long as the pressure upstream of the valve (13) remains between certain limits (in practice between the atmospheric pressure on the ground and the pressure P, that is to say that corresponding to the altitude up to which it is desired to be able to keep the engine power constant), the pressure at the inlet of the supply system will remain constantly equal to P and the device will ensure the constant mass ratio of fuel and air accessing the engine.
As it goes without saying, and as it is already evident. of the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to that of its modes of application, nor to those of the embodiments of its various parts, which have more particularly been explained; on the contrary, it embraces some. all variants.
