<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

PATENT OF INVENTION, "Rotary machine capable of serving as a compressor or a motor".
The present invention relates to a rotary machine comprising a fixed cylinder in communication with two conduits and inside which is eccentrically disposed a rotor in which blades are engaged in contact with the walls of the fixed cylinder.
In machines of this type known until now, said blades can slide in the eccentric rotor and when the latter rotates they tend to press against the cylindrical wall of the fixed cylinder under the action of centrifugal force. . Sometimes, these blades are also urged by springs towards said wall. These machines have the drawback of giving rise to considerable wear of the blades and of the cylinder and to poor contact of the blades with the cylindrical wall of the cylinder by the fact that they do not remain in radial planes perpendicular to this wall.
In order to remedy these drawbacks, provision is made, according to the invention, for said blades to be mounted idly on a fixed shaft concentric with the fixed cylinder and to pass through joints mounted in the rotor so that while remaining exactly in position. contact with the walls of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
cylinder, and in radial planes, the angle which they form between them two by two can vary during the rotation of the rotor.
When it is especially desired to use this machine as a compressor, the rotor is driven by a motor and one of the aforesaid pipes is made to open into the fixed cylinder at a place such that the increasing space between two successive blades which move apart ceases to 'be in communication with it at the moment when the maximum space between these blades is achieved while the other of the aforementioned pipes is made to open into the fixed cylinder at a place such as the decreasing space between two blades which approach begins to be in communication with it at the moment when the desired pressure of repression is realized in this space.
A compressor of this kind can run at high speed, its flow rate is absolutely regular. As a result, it can be of very reduced weight and bulk and simple to construct. It delivers a well-determined volume per revolution and unlike known devices which have the same property, it operates silently. It also has the advantage over fans of not requiring a diffuser or a diffusion chimney.
When it is especially desired to use the rotary machine as a motor, according to the invention, the rotor is wedged on a receiving shaft and one of the aforesaid pipes is opened, which is in communication with a source of pressurized gas in part of the fixed cylinder where two successive vanes can move away from each other, while the other of the aforesaid pipes, which is in communication with the exhaust, is made to open into the fixed cylinder from l 'place beyond which two successive pallets approach one another.
When this motor must be able to turn in both directions,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
it is further completed as follows. On each side of its part which limits the maximum space between two successive blades, the fixed cylinder is in communication with an exhaust duct by a slot which is closed by one of the blades when this maximum space is achieved, each of these exhaust ducts being provided with a valve which can be brought into the exhaust preventing position while the valve in the other exhaust duct is in the exhaust permitting position. Furthermore, said fixed cylinder is in communication with two other conduits which can be placed one in communication with a source of pressurized gas and the other with the exhaust or vice versa.
The displacement of the valves allowing rotation in the correct direction can moreover be carried out automatically at the same time as the admission of the pressurized gas by the corresponding pipe by the fact that each of the aforesaid valves is connected to an auxiliary piston which determines in the cylinder - dre which contains two chambers of which the one which, by being pressurized causes the valve to close, is in communication with the part of the fixed cylinder in which the pressure of the motor fluid prevails and of which that which is on the other side of the auxiliary piston is in communication with the part of the fixed cylinder which is at this moment in communication with the exhaust.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto and which represent schematically, and by way of example only, two embodiments of a rotary machine according to the invention. .
Figure 1 is a cross section along the line I-I of Figure 2 in a rotary machine according to the invention equipped with a compressor.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section along the line II-II of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross section in a rotary machine according to the invention equipped with a motor.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
In Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a fixed cylinder 2 into which open a pipe 3 and a pipe 4, inside this fixed cylinder 2 is disposed exdentrically a rotor 5. The peripheral wall of the latter is crossed by blades such as 6,7,8 and 9. These blades are mounted freely by means of bearings 10 such as ball bearings on a fixed shaft 11 concentric with the fixed cylinder 2.
These blades 6 to 9 come into contact with the inside face of the cylindrical wall of the fixed cylinder 2 and are in radial planes and therefore in planes perpendicular to this cylindrical wall. They pass through joints 12 mounted in the rotor 5. By this assembly, when the rotor is rotated, the angular distance between two successive blades varies from a minimum represented by the angle between the blades 8 and 9 up to a minimum. maximum represented by the angle between the blades 6 and 7, although the blades remain in radial planes.
Let us suppose that the rotor 5 turns in the direction of the arrow X. The pipe 3 opens into the part of the fixed cylinder 2 included between the blades 9 and 6, that is to say in a place such as the blades 9 and 6 one otter moves apart, so as to form an increasing space between them. It serves as a suction line. It extends towards the position occupied by the blade 6 to a place 3a such that it ceases to be in communication with the maximum space between the blades 6 and 7 when this maximum space is achieved. It
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
As a result, the suction between the moving blades takes place until the moment when the maximum space is achieved.
When the blades 6 and 7 are driven by the rotor 5 from the position in which they are shown, they approach one another and compress the gas between them. This compression takes place until the moment when the blade 7 occupies the position shown at 7 ′ for which the space between the blades 6 and 7 begins to be in communication at 4a with the pipe 4 which serves as a discharge pipe.
The place where the line 4: begins to be in communication with the decreasing space between two approaching blades is determined so that the gas pressure in this space is equal to the discharge pressure at the moment when said communication is established.
The suction line 3 is in communication with the interior of the fixed cylinder 2 from a location 3b quite close to the line of contact 5a of the rotor 5 with the fixed cylinder 2.
In this way, the suction between two blades which separate can take place from the beginning of this separation. The delivery pipe 4 is in communication with the fixed cylinder 2 as far as a location 4b very close to said contact line 5a. In this way, the delivery can be done in a practically complete way since at the moment when one of the blades is in front of the place 4b, the volume of gas included between it, the fixed cylinder 2, the line of contact 5a and rotor 5 is negligible.
The tightness between the blades 6 to 9 and the fixed cylinder 2 can be ensured by means of sealing strips arranged in the blades. Preferably, the sealing strips intended to come into contact with the cylindrical wall of the cylinder are of very low mass and are subjected to the action of tension springs acting in the opposite direction to the centrifugal face in order to be able to rotate the blades. to large
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
speed without the sealing bars exerting significant friction on the fixed cylindrical wall 2. The side bars intended to ensure the sealing between the blades and the bases 2a of the fixed cylinder 2 are simply pressed against these bases by springs.
The lubrication of the bearings 10 serving to support the blades is carried out for example by means of a longitudinal channel 11a and radial channels 11b formed in the fixed shaft 11. The sealing between the ends of the rotor 5 and the bases 2a of the fixed cylinder 2 is ensured by means of rings 13, 14 and 15.
The ring 13, which is fixed, is connected to the ring 14 by a spring 16, so that this ring 14 is pressed against the ring 15 made integral with the rotor 5. The latter is integral with a shaft 17 carried by the frame 18 by means of bearings 19 and carries a gear 20 which receives the action of the motor intended to make it turn.
In Figure 3, there is shown a rotary machine according to the invention in which the rotor 5, instead of being controlled by an auxiliary motor, is wedged on a receiving shaft mounted in the frame 18, for example of a manner analogous to that shown in FIG. 2 for the shaft 17, which is in the axis of the rotor 5.
In the fixed cylinder 2 opens a pipe 21 which can be placed in communication with a source of pressurized gas.
This pipe opens into a part of the fixed cylinder 2 where two successive blades such as 9 and 6 can move away from each other.
A line 22 also opens into the fixed pylinder 2, which can be placed in communication with a medium at a pressure lower than that of the gas admitted through line 21.
This pipe 22 opens for example into the atmosphere or into a condenser depending on whether the gas admitted through the pipe
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
21 is compressed air or pressurized steam. In the case shown, the pipe 22 communicates with the atmosphere.
The space between the fixed cylinder 2 and two blades which approach each other can be put in communication with the atmosphere (or the exhaust) as soon as this approximation begins. This communication is effected, for example, by a slot 23 formed opposite the position occupied by one of the blades when the latter is used to determine with one of the neighboring blades the maximum space between two successive blades. In the case shown, it can be seen that the blade 7 is opposite the light 23. If the blade 7 rotates in the direction of the arrow Y, as soon as it has passed the position in which it is shown, the space between the blades 6 and 7 are in communication with the atmosphere through light 23, while the species between blades 7 and 8 is in communication with the atmosphere through line 22.
If a compressed air tank is connected to a pipe 24, this compressed air enters by passing through the pipe 21 between the blades 6 and 9 and by relaxing causes the blades to turn in the direction of the arrow Y. The relaxation of this air The compressed air takes place until the moment when the blade 6 has reached the current position of the blade 7 and the blade 9 the current position of the blade 6. During this time, compressed air is admitted between the blades. 9 and 8, while the air which was between the blades 6 and 7 escaped through the port 23 and through the pipe 22. The rotation of the blades causes the rotor 5 to rotate in the direction of the arrow X.
To turn the rotor in the opposite direction to the arrow X, it suffices to move a distributor such that the pipe 22 instead of being in communication with the atmosphere is in communication with the fitting 24 and that the pipe 21 instead to be in communication with connection 24, or in communication with the atmosphere. This connection change
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
can be carried out by moving a double piston 25 in the direction of arrow Z up to the full stroke in the cylinder 26 which contains it and whose two ends 26a and 26b communicate with the atmosphere. For this new pasition of the double piston 25, the head 25a of the latter is located between the end 26a and the pipe 22, while the head 25b is located between the connector 24 and the pipe 21.
The escape of the air between the blades 6 and 7 takes place as soon as the blade 6 has passed the position where it is represented by a light 27 identical to the light 23 described above. But so that at this moment the compressed air, which is admitted between the blades 8 and 7 through the duct 22, cannot escape through the opening 23, as soon as the blade 7 has passed the latter, the communication between the light 23 and the atmosphere must be blocked. This sealing is effected by applying to its seat a valve 28 disposed in the pipe 29. A similar valve 30 disposed in the pipe 31 must at the same time be moved away from its seat in order to put the port 27 in communication with the. atmosphere.
The displacement of the valves 28 and 30 can be carried out automatically at the same time as the compressed air is admitted into the cylinder by one or the other of the pipes 21 or 22 by the fact that these valves are integral with an auxiliary piston. denoted respectively by 32 and 33. This piston determines with the cylinder which contains it, respectively 34 or 35, two chambers 34a and 34b for the cylinder 34 and two chambers 35a and 35b for the cylinder 35. The chamber 34a is in communication with the cylinder. The interior of the fixed cylinder 2 through a slot 36 which opens into this cylinder in the vicinity of the pipe 22. A channel 37, which opens into the chamber 34b, also opens into the fixed cylinder 2 in the vicinity of the pipe 21.
Likewise, a slot 38, which opens in the vicinity of the pipe 21, puts the ohambre 35a in communication with the interior of the fixed cylinder 2 and a channel 39, which opens into the chamber 35b, also opens out.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
ment in the fixed cylinder 2 in the vicinity of the pipe 22.
As a result of the presence of these slots 36 and 38 as well as these channels 37 and 39, when the compressed air is admitted through the pipe 22, the piston 32 is lifted up to the tide where the valve 28 is applied to its seat, while the piston 33 is Jazz lowered until the valve 30 comes to press on the bottom of the cylinder 35.
The double piston 25 constituting the single distributor by which the admission of pressurized gas and the exhaust of the expanded gas are simultaneously controlled can be maintained in a position between those envisaged above and for which the heads 25a and 25b eliminate all communication between the source of pressurized gas and the two conduits 21 and 22. These are then simultaneously in communication with the atmosphere via the ends 26a and 26b of the cylinder 26. The distributor 25 can be maintained in this intermediate position, for example, by a ball engaged in a circular groove of the rod 40, under the action of a spring.
The rotary machine according to Figure 3 can advantageously serve as a winch drive motor in mines.
It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiments shown and that many modifications can be made in the fourme, the arrangement and the constitution of the elements involved in its realization without going beyond the scope of the present patent.
