<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

REVENDICATIONS ---------------------------

Method and device for starting motors
Diesel by hand or using a low power starter.
The present invention makes it possible to start by hand or with the aid of a low power starter diesel engines which, even when they are of small displacement, ordinarily require a very powerful starter to overcome the resistance to the engine. starting due to the very high compression required to produce ignition in this type of engine.
According to the invention, in order to start a diesel engine, it is first run without compression by keeping the air inlet of the cylinder closed during the four stages of the cycle and by opening the exhaust of the cylinder for. the compression time, then when the engine has reached a sufficient speed so that its inertia can, over-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
increase the resistance of the compression, we re-establish the normal play of the admission and the exhaust. This produces, with the compression of the load, the ignition of the latter and the starting of the engine which is thus obtained without effort.
The execution of this starting process does not require major modifications to ordinary diesel engines to which it suffices to adapt an air intake shutter and a control opening the exhaust valve (s) to the time. compression. The two devices are preferably engaged so that they can be put into and out of action simultaneously, by a single maneuver.
In order to make the invention fully understood, it will be described below in more detail, with reference to the appended drawing given by way of example and in which:
Figs. 1 to 4 are schematic views of a cylinder head, in vertical section, showing the position of the components at the four times of the operating cycle of the diesel engine, when starting, and
Fig. 5 shows a starting mechanism according to the invention, suitable for a diesel engine seen in vertical section.
In these figures, a denotes the intake shutter which may be a throttle mounted in the intake duct as shown, or else a valve or other suitable shutter, and b is the or- Cylinder whose control is arranged so that, for starting, it can be made to open the valve twice instead of once in each cycle.
The shutter being closed and the control of the valve b being placed in the starting position, we
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
cranks the engine by hand or using a starter which may be low power.
At the first stage (Fig. 1) the suction valve c opens, but as the shutter a is closed, the piston d going down does not suck more air into the cylinder than it contained. and creates a slight depression behind him.
At the second stroke (Fig. 2), which corresponds to the compression time in the normal cycle, the intake valve c closes and the exhaust valve b opens by the effect of its special command. The little air in the cylinder is forced out through b by the rising piston.
At the third stroke (Fig. 3) the two valves b, c being closed, the piston goes down creating a vacuum.
At the fourth stroke (Fig. 4) the exhaust valve b opens normally, the piston rises, the valve b closes and the intake valve c opens for the start of the first stroke.
But as the shutter has remained closed, there is no re-entry of air into the cylinder and the piston continues to work in the rarefied air, which avoids any pressure and therefore allows the mo - motor at high speed by hand or using the starter, almost without effort.
After two or three revolutions of the engine, the speed acquired is sufficient to overcome the normal compressive resistance which is caused by opening the shutter a and re-establishing the normal operation of the exhaust valve b. The fuel is injected into the compressed air, the load ignites and the engine begins to work.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the exemplary embodiment shown in FIG. 5, the intake shutter and the mechanism opening the exhaust valve b at compression time are controlled together by the lever 1 which acts by means of the rod 2 on the lever 3 of the shutter a and at means of the rod 4 on the rocker arm 5 actuating the valve b.
In the starting position, shown in solid lines, the shutter has closed the intake and the rocker arm 5 engages a stop 6 of the valve lifter 7 while a second rocker arm 8, connected to the rocker arm 5 by a rod 9, is placed with its roller 10 in the path of the cam 11. In this way, the cam 11 opens the valve b twice at each revolution: once at the exhaust time by acting normally on the roller 12 of pusher 7, and once at the compression time via rocker arms 8 and 5.
When the lever 1 is returned to the normal operating position, shown in chain lines, the shutter a opens and the rocker arms 5 and 8 move away from the stop 6 and from the cam 11, respectively. as a result of the pivoting of the eccentric 13 on which the rocker arm 5 is mounted. The cam 11 then no longer opens the valve b until the escape time.
If the engine has several cylinders, only one intake shutter a may be provided for a group of cylinders, but it goes without saying that the exhaust valve b of each cylinder must be ordered separately in order to open on time. compression of the cylinder considered. When the construction of the engine is suitable, this control can be carried out by means of a shaft with two sets of cams offset by 180. Still other arrangements are obviously possible.

The invention is particularly advantageous in its application to diesel engines for automobiles which, thanks to it, can be started by cranking or by means of a starter and ordinary electric accumulators.
