<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
lingots qu'on étire ensuite.

1 ) l'enceinte en forme de creuset qui contient la masse vitreuse fondue est percée d'évents dans sa région supérieure, de façon à permettre l'évacuation des vapeurs qui se dégagent des matières en cours de fusion;
2')l'apport de chaleur nécessaire à la fusion est assuré par une source calorifique unique, en forme de résistor hélicoï- dal qui chauffe le pourtour de l'enceinte ;

diaire entre lenoeinte et la gaine étant en communication avec l'enoeinte par les évents pratiques dans celle-ci et avec l'air extérieur, de manière à assurer l'évacuation des vapeurs qui se dégagent des matières en fusion et à protéger la source de cha- leur contre le contact de ces vapeurs ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
substance calorifuge 23
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

"METHOD AND DEVICES FOR MANUFACTURING GLASS PRODUCTS BY STRETCHING OR ROLINATING".
The present invention, from) to Mr. Gaston DELPECH, relates to a process for the manufacture of vitreous products by stretching or rolling consisting of forming a molten vitreous mass, of as small a volume as possible, the upper layer of which consists of a bed of fusion fed by a supply of solid batch materials, such as frits or.
quartz in grains and the lower layer of which is simultaneously formed into drawn or rolled products, such as rods, tubes, sheets or plates, of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
such that during the manufacturing process the volume of the vitreous mass remains as constant as possible *
The invention also comprises apparatuses for carrying out the above process comprising in principle an enclosure which contains the molten vitreous mass, a device for supplying this enclosure with vitrifiable solids, a heat source which melts these materials. , by forming a fusion bed at the upper part of the molten tinsse and refining it,
and a stretching or rolling machine, the flow rate of which is adjusted so as to extract from the lower part of the enclosure an amount of molten material equivalent to that which is produced by the supply of the batch solids.
We know that there are already, for sufficiently fluid vitreous materials, such as glass, enclosures made up of several zones which are arranged one after the other, the first serving for the melting of the raw materials. and the last to the feeding of rolling or drawing machines, either by removing the molten material or by continuously discharging this material into said machines.
The disadvantage of these enclosures is their enoombreme nt resulting from the juxtaposition of the melting and extraction zones, the heat losses caused by the development of the walls of the zones thus juxtaposed, the low ratio of the heat energy used to the quantity of molten material and lack of homogeneity of the molten material resulting from insufficient mixing of warmer top layers and cooler bottom layers
For glassy materials of higher viscosity, such as fused silica, there are currently only batch manufacturing methods consisting of forming
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
ingots which are then stretched.
It is also known to manufacture finished products by melting superimposed layers of materials using consecutive inputs of quartz grains on a blank,
The advantages procured by the invention are the reduction of the cavity and the installation costs resulting from the superposition of the smelting and extraction stages in a single enclosure of small volume.
the increase in water efficiency by the better use of heat which acts on the fusion bed and by the minimum reduction in maintenance costs. the best quality of the products obtained as a result of the regularity of the successive layers of molten material from the fusion to the exit of the chamber and the rapid refining of the molten material, finally the flexibility of the manufacturing which although continues, can lend itself to all changes, stops and resumes, according to the nature of the products to be obtained, these various changes of regime being achievable in the minimum of time and with the minimum of expense.
In the appended drawing, which shows, by way of example, devices for carrying out the method forming the subject of the invention, FIG. 1 is a vertical section through the axis of an apparatus for the manufacture of solid fused silica rods, Figures 2 and 3 are two vertical sections at 90 through the axis of an apparatus for the manufacture of fused silica plates, and Figure 4 is a vertical section through the axis of an improvement of the apparatus of FIG. 1 arranged for the manufacture of fused silica tubes.
In Figure 1, 1 shows an oreuset-shaped enclosure open at its upper part and the removable side of which 2
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
is pierced with an opening 3 in the form of a die for drawing the fused silica 4 using a machine at adjustable speed 5.
A rotary distributor 6 regulates the fall of the quartz grains 7 in a sheath 8 on a melting bed 9 heated by a three-phase arc 10 which spurts out between electrodes 11. The circumference of the crucible 1 is heated by the electric feedthrough. glove a resistor 12,
To make tubes at. instead of solid rods, a punch is arranged in the known manner in the axis of the die.
In Figures 2 and 3, the heating enclosure is reduced to its removable bottom, formed by two flat walls, graphite for example, which at the same time constitute the resistor.
The end pieces 13, which close the enclosure, are used to supply the current. The distributor 6 is movable above the melting bed 9 in the direction of the arrows 14 at the same time as the electrodes 11 between which the arc 10 shoots out, which makes it possible to obtain the drawing in plates. the device of figure 4 differs from that of figure 1 by the following characteristics
1) the crucible-shaped enclosure which contains the molten vitreous mass is pierced with vents in its upper region, so as to allow the evacuation of the vapors which emerge from the materials being melted;
2 ') the supply of heat necessary for fusion is provided by a single heat source, in the form of a helical resistor which heats the periphery of the enclosure;
3) the melting chamber is surrounded by a tubular sheath which separates it from the heat source, the intermediate space
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
between the enclosure and the sheath being in communication with the enclosure by the practical vents therein and with the outside air, so as to ensure the evacuation of the vapors which emanate from the molten materials and to protect the source of heat against contact with these vapors;
4) The feed to the fusion bed is ensured not by a distributor, but by a receptacle which contains the material to be melted and which surmounts the fusion chamber.
5) the start-up is carried out after placing in the melting chamber a block of previously melted material and closing the upper opening of this chamber with a plate of the same material, so as to subtract the charge p ulveru - slow to the reducing and fueling action of the vapors emanating from the melting chamber at the start of the operation.
It is when this cover has melted and has collapsed in the melting chamber that the continuous descent and melting of the load begins and that the drawing operation can be started.
In the device of FIG. 4, the heating chamber, formed by a cylindrical wall 1 and by a bottom 2 forming a die, is provided at its upper part with oblique vents 15.
The electric resistor 12, made in accordance with the device which is the subject of the French patent application dismantled by the applicant on February 19, 1932 under N 329.955, comprises two sockets 16 and 17, provided with flow chambers of 'water 18 and 19, and crimped on two blocks of oarbone 20 and 21,
Block 20 is screwed directly onto one end of resistor 12. Block 21 is connected to the other end by means of a conductive graphite boot 22, lined with a
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
heat-insulating substance 23
The electrical isolation of the two current leads is provided by the insulating washer 24 protected from the radiation of the resistor by the refractory seal 25.
Between the cylindrical wall 1 of the melting chamber and the resistor 12 is disposed a vertical graphite tube 26, which rests, with the chamber, on a base formed by the calorifuge pieces 27 and 28. A plug, not shown. in the drawing, allows to close the lower opening of part 28.
Vents 29 made at the base of the wall above the part 27 allow the silica vapors, which leave the melting chamber through the vents 15, and which spread through the annular space between the wall 1 of this enclosure and the tube 26, to escape to the outside.
A graphite plate 30, hollowed out in its middle, is supported on the one hand on the upper edge of the wall 1 of the enclosure and of the tube 26, on the other hand on the outer periphery of the boot 22 of which it is isolated by a refractory seal 31.
A ferrule 32 supported on the socket 17 and on the block 21 forms with these parts a container intended to receive the material to be melted? This material, by melting in the enclosure 1, takes the form 33.
A punch 34, which determines the internal diameter of the tube to be drawn 35, is fixed to the end of a tube 36 of heat-insulating material, screwed into the lower part of a rod 37, the upper part of which is threaded and movable. in a hole 38. The punch 34, the tube 35 and the shank 37 are holes, so as to allow the access or the introduction of air or a suitable gas in the center of the tube to be drawn 35.
The nut 38 is supported on a support 39 which can be moved horizontally by means of the adjusting screws 40 on a
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
plate 41 which is connected by spacers 42 with the base 43 which serves as a seat for all of the components previously described. * Ire adjustment in position of the punch is effected by the hole 38 and the adjustment screws 40.
The support 39 is hollow, so as to circulate therein a cooling fluid to prevent the heating of the rod 36 and thus facilitate the movement of this rod in the support 39.
In the event that one wishes to stretch a rod at the link of the tube 35, the punch 34 and the members to which it is attached are removed.
To start up the device of FIG. 4, a block of previously melted silica is placed in the melting chamber which will serve as a primer for the continuation of the operation; the upper opening of the melting chamber is closed by a silica cover resting on the plate 30, and the inside of the ferrule 32 is filled with sand or granulated quartz. The silica cover subtracts the powder charge. slow to the reducing and fueling action of the vapors emanating from the melting chamber at the start of the operation.
It is when this cover has melted and collapsed in the melting chamber that the continuous descent and melting of the charge begins and the stretching operation can be started.
It is understood that the devices shown in this drawing are indicated only by way of example and that the details of execution may vary without modifying the principle of the invention.
