<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Retractable anti-glare windshield.
The present invention relates to a retractable anti - glare windshield, to be mounted at any desired location of a motor vehicle. This windshield has a cylindrical boot of small dimensions, which is fixed vertically to an upright of the body; from this box protrudes a control member which it suffices to remove - by traction - from the boot to cause a transparent and anti-glare screen to emerge from it, which is deployed to the desired length. Essentially, the screen consists of a sheet of cellophane or other flexible transparent material, tinted yellow, blue or other desired color.
One end of the screen is attached to a rotating spring drum mounted in the cylinder, and the other to the actuator; the longitudinal edges of the screen are engaged in a slot of a retractable or telescopic tube, one end of which is fixed to the cylinder, while the other is attacked by the control member.

The object of the invention is shown in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing by way of example, and in which:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view, partly in section, of the device with a partially developed screen.
Fig.2 is the elevational view, the screen being fully extended.
Fig.3 is a section along III-III of Fig.1 and
Fig.4 is a side view of the fig 1.
Fig.6 is a section along V-V of fig.4.
The device comprises, as already mentioned, a cylindrical box 1, made of metal, which is attached vertically to any desired amount of the vehicle, for example by a tab 2 (fig.2).
In this cylinder is mounted a drum 3 capable of rotating on the central axis 4 with respect to which it is centered by rings or sleeves 5 rotating with it. The cylinder is closed at both ends by interlocking caps 6, both crossed by the pin 4 which is held fixed in the cylinder by the nuts 7 screwed on its threaded ends. On the shaft 4 is mounted a spring 8, one end of which is fixed to the shaft and the other is fixed either to the drum 3 or to one of the rings 5.
On the drum 3 is fixed an edge of a screen 9, formed of a transparent, flexible and anti-glare material, such as cellophane colored yellow. This screen is any length; it exits outside the cylinder 1 through a longitudinal slot 10 thereof.
Each of the caps 6 is secured (by welding or by tightening the nuts 7) with a tab 11 terminating a tube 12 which extends perpendicularly to the axis of the cylinder 1. These two tubes, of any cross section, are of the telescopic type. They are for example each formed of a series of tubes nested one inside the other (12-12'-12 "-12" ') and capable of coming out successively from each other without however

release completely, thanks to stops 13-14 (fig.l) The various sections constituting each tube are split lengthwise at 16, to receive the longitudinal edges of the transparent screen when the latter is pulled out of the cylinder 1.
The free transverse edge of the screen is clamped, over almost its entire length, between two metal tabs 17 of a tube 18 threaded onto a rod 19, the two flat ends of which penetrate into the slots 15 of the tubes 12. 12 "'of smaller diameter are closed at their outer end, to prevent the exit of the rod 19 from the slots 15.
On the tube 18 are threaded two other tubes 20, capable of being brought together against the springs 21, by pushing on their opposite end tab 22; normally, in the position of fig.l and 2, said springs, resting against the stop 23 of the tube 18, separate these tubes 20 from each other and maintain their external end tab 24 against the closed end of the smaller diameter 12 "'tubes.
The screen being for example fully developed (fig.2), and the powerful spring µ. being strongly tensioned as a result of the rotation of the drum 3 when exiting the screen, the tabs 24, pressed against the end of the tubes 12 "', tend, under the action of the spring, to force one back into the other the various sections 12 "', 12", 12', 12, at the same time as the screen itself enters the cylinder 1 and winds up on the drum 3, This retraction movement will occur if the spring 8 is quite tight.
Otherwise, it will be necessary to push back by hand, until the tabs 24 have reached the end of the tubes 12. Then bringing the tubes 20 to one another, so as to bring the tabs back. 24 out of engagement with the tubes 12, the screen alone will then be attracted by the spring 8, to arrive at the position given in dotted lines in fig.l.
To open the screen, it suffices, starting from this last position, to pull on the tabs 22, in the direction of the tubes.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
12; the screen unfolds progressively (by tensioning the spring) and the ends of the rod 19 successively drive the various tube sections 12 "'-12" -12'.
It is preferable to bend the spring µ. sufficiently so that the screen and the tubes 12 'automatically return to the closed position. In this case, it is obviously necessary to provide a device enabling the screen to be blocked in any opening position. For this purpose (fig.1) on the upper end of the hollow drum 1 is freely placed a ring 25 whose necked part penetrates into the drum. This ring carries several small pins 26 which pass through the top cap 6 and protrude out of it. On the threaded end of the axle, and above the nut 7, is screwed a hollow cap 27.
The screen being developed to the desired length, it suffices to tighten this nut 27, the latter presses strongly on the pins 26 and therefore applies the ring 25 against the drum 3. thus acting as a locking brake. As soon as the nut 37 is loosened, the drum 3 is released and can obey the bias of the spring 8.
It is obvious that the screen could be uncolored and only serve as a windshield.
