BREVET D'INVENTION.

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

PATENT.
"Improvements made to seats, especially those for automotive vericules".
The invention relates to seats ;, and it relates more specifically (because it is in their case that its application seems to offer the most interest), but not exclusively, among these seats, those intended motor vehicles,
Its purpose., Above all, to make such., These. seats, that they are more comfortable and less expensive to set up, than up to now.
It consists, mainly, in arranging these same seats in such a way, that their part intended to directly bear the weight of the person is connected, to an appropriate frame, by at least one elastic articulation arranged in such a way. , that the weight of said person can exert, on this joint, a couple likely to. cause certain relative tilting movements of said part with respect to the frame.
It consists, put at. apart from this main provision

cipale, in certain other provisions. which are preferably used at the same time, and which will be discussed more explicitly below, in particular, in a second provision, also relating to the seats, consisting in constituting at least partially the part intended to directly receive the weight of the person, by a number of resilient tubular elements, arranged parallel to one another, these elements being produced, for example, by means of tubes wound in spirals, of the kind used for the transmissions of the Bowden type.
It relates more particularly to a certain mode of application (that in which it is applied to: seats for automobiles), as well as certain embodiments of said arrangements; and it relates more particularly still, and this by way of new industrial products, the seats comprising the application of these same provisions, the special elements specific to their establishment, as well as the sets, fixed or mobile, in particular motor vehicles. , comprising the like. seats.
And it can, in any event, be clearly understood with the aid of the additional description which follows, as well as the appended drawing, which supplement and drawing are, of course, given above all by way of indication.
Figs. 1 to. 5, of this drawing, show, each in side view, seats established according to different embodiments of the invention.
Fig. 6 shows, in partial plan view, a seat established according to another embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 7, finally, shows, in side view, a seat

place to give the preference, proposing to establish a seat to be used, for example, either as an apartment, or as a garden furniture, or, as will be indicated later in a more precisely, a seat intended to be mounted on a motor vehicle, the procedure is as follows, or similarly.
Said seat is arranged in such a way that it essentially comprises two parts, namely, on the one hand, a fixed frame a, intended to rest on the floor of the room or ae the assembly to support the seat, and to. transfer the weight of the seated person to the same floor, and on the other hand, a movable part b intended to directly receive the weight of said person, and that said movable part is connected to the frame by at least one elastic articulation arranged in such a way that the weight of the person can come to exert, on said articulation, a torque capable of causing certain relative tilting movements of the movable part relative to the frame.
For this purpose, and as regards, first of all 'the frame a and the movable part b, they are made of any material, for example of wood or of metal, and, preferably, in the latter case, they are made. uses tubular elements which make it possible to obtain the lowest cost price, and they are given any suitable shape by fitting them, for example - and assuming, as will be done in what follows, that the tubular elements are used - for the frame a. or by at least two bent elements with two branches arranged in such a way that, when one of the branches is placed on the ground, the other branch can be used as upright (fig. 1, 2, 4. and 5), or by four uprights connected together in an appropriate manner (fig.
3), or in any other way
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and, as regards the movable part b, by a six-frame of roughly rectangular shape for example (fig. 6), to which is added, preferably, a backrest c, more or less inclined which follows whether it is a seat for the seated position or for the lying position (chaise longue), said backrest being either integral with said frame, forming, for example, a single piece with the latter, or connected to that here by elastic means, for example of the same type as those to be provided between the. frame b and frame a (fig. 2).
As regards, now, cesderniers means, that is to say those intended to connect the frame b and the frame a, they are produced, for example, or, alternatively, as shown in FIGS. 1 to 4, using a single resilient articulation formed between said frame or a member integral with the latter, and the uprights of the frame or at least some. uprights of this frame, said articulation being, in any event, arranged in such a way that it extends along the front edge of said frame, so that the weight of the person tends to overturn the frame backwards and its backrest, and this same articulation being achieved, for example, either by springs d in the form of a swan neck (fig.
2), either by helical springs, with one or more coils. (other figures), or else, as shown in fig. 5 and 7, with the aid of several articulations formed between the frame and the frame, preferably with the aid of two articulations of parallel axes, arranged in such a way, and connected to one another. other in such a way that the center of gravity of the seated person falls into the interval between these two. axes, and that the weight of said person tends to exert on these joints torques in opposite directions, so that said frame can, in its movements, keep approximately the same inclination with respect to the ground.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
According to this last arrangement, which seems particularly interesting in the case of seats for motor vehicles, said articulations (fig. 5 and 7) are made, for example, by connecting each of the lateral elements of the frame, to the corresponding upright of the frame. frame, using an elastic bar, of suitable section, which is wound, near its two ends, along two helices el e2 in opposite directions: but, of course, we could obtain the same result by replacing the portion of said bar, separating the two helixes, by any intermediate member.
If, according to the latter arrangement, it is desired that the chassis strictly retain the same inclination with respect to the ground, it may be useful to provide means for guiding the chassis or the backrest, suitable for making it possible to achieve these. conditions.
It is also possible to advantageously provide, in each of the above-mentioned embodiments, means suitable for making it possible to vary the depth of the seat, said means being produced, for example, by connecting each of the lateral elements of the frame b, to the corresponding articulation, using a slide g, arranged so as to allow a relative displacement of, -, said ,, elements relative to the axis of the articulation.
By virtue of these latter means, it is possible, at the same time as the depth is varied, to modify the flexibility of the assembly, by varying the lever arm of the torque acting on the joint or joints.
Finally, it goes without saying that the joints of which it has been spoken can be advantageously covered, defaçon @ be made invisible, which is easily achieved, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 7, by extending forwards the side elements of the frame b, the gap between these elements being filled by a sheet, a canvas or by any other means.
As a result, whatever the mode of realization -
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
tion adopted, one can get exhibiting seats compared to those. already existing, many advantages, in particular, that of offering great flexibility, that of making it possible to replace advantageously, and in particular in the case. of vehicle seats, the coil springs which until now formed the padding of said seats, which springs sag very quickly, that, in this same case, of constituting in a way a second suspension coming to combine with the suspension specific to said vehicles, a shock absorber system, of any type h (fig.
7), being then provided, preferably, between the frame of said seats, and the floor of the bodywork, that of preventing the clothes of the person from puiasent- wear by friction against the backrest, since the backrest follows the movements of the chassis b (unlike what happens in ordinary seats), and that, finally, of being of a low establishment price.
Advantageously, in addition, according to an arrangement capable, where appropriate, of being used in isolation, the filling is formed between the elements of the frame b, by a certain number of transverse tusular and elastic elements i, arranged parallel to each other. others, and constituted., for example, with the aid of tubes wound in a spiral, of the kind used for transmissions of the Bowden type, and the whole is covered by a covering of leather or fabrics, or by cushions. .
In addition, more preferably, means are provided for adjusting the tension of said elements, for which the ends of the latter are mounted, for example, on rods j capable of being more or less close to the elements. corresponding side elements of the frame b.
As goes without saying, and as it follows moreover already from the foregoing, the invention is in no way limited to @
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
those of its modes of application, nor those of the embodiments of its various parts which have been more specifically indicated; on the contrary, it embraces all the variants.
