<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Power transmitting mechanism.
French patent no. 5190086 of April 24, 1919, with seven additions, has already described constructions of the author of the present invention and in particular, the fifth addition of March 5, 1921, constructions which concerned gear change mechanisms mounted on a flywheel referred to as "transformer flywheel".
The present invention relates to a power transmission mechanism, connecting a motor shaft to a receiving shaft, in which the speeds of the two shafts are in a ratio which can vary continuously by the maneuver. of a single drive shaft. This mechanism is characterized in that Ho 308, case IV.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
one of the two shafts carries, symmetrically arranged on each of two spokes forming at least one diameter, two circular guides with the same axis, one guiding an externally toothed satellite ring and the other a plate provided with a button. crank, while the other shaft is integral with a pinion mounted coaxially on it and which meshes with the aforementioned crown-planet gear, then in that means make it possible to make each of the plates integral for rotation, and crown of the same axis, means that a cam puts into action for the various plates successively when they traverse a certain sector of their revolution,
the securing of a plate with its crown having the effect that the crown drives the receiving shaft at the speed of the motor shaft when it is stationary on its circular guide and at another speed when it moves on it, these two effects being possible by the fact that the crank knobs of the chainrings are freely adjusted in a circular groove made in a ring which is movable around its eccentric axis so that, when it is eccentric, said ring forces the knobs to oscillate around their respective axes at the same time as these axes participate in the relative rotation of the two shafts, the cam being shaped and arranged so as to secure the plates and rings in a determined part of their rotary oscillation thus produced,
mechanism further characterized in that the rotation of the drive shaft has the first effect of determining the eccentricity of the groove and thereby regulating the relative speed of the shafts, then the concomitant effect, by virtue of appropriate kinematic connections, to adjust the cam setting angle with respect to the frame, so that the used parts of the ring oscillations are always the same,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
said connections causing the wedging angle to be a function of the space traversed by the axis of the groove in its eccentric movement.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Figure 1 is a semi-schematic and plan section of the mechanism mounted on a flywheel.
FIG. 2 is a section along the axis of the motor and receiver shafts.
FIG. 3 is a schematic section of FIG. 2, on the plane A-B and showing a control mechanism located behind the section plane.
1 and 2 designate the two parts of the casing, 3 the motor flywheel, 21 its shaft and 8 the receiving shaft integral with the pinion 7. The flywheel 3 has circular guides 13 located entirely between its axis and its periphery, and raised in its own material, These guides have the shape of rings. Crowns 12 toothed internally and externally are fitted on their outer periphery; teeth are designated by 6 'and 6. In the interior of the rings 13 are guided plates 4 by their annular edge 4' fitted in the rings 13. On these plates are rotatably mounted planet gears 15.
In the form shown, Figure 1, these pinions are guided in recesses made in these plates and in which they fit by their perimeter Each of the plates 4 carries, fixed on it, a crank button 9 suitably notched so that the teeth interior 6 'of the crown 12 can pass below the cylindrical part of this button. Coaxially with the guides 13, are lifted in the flywheel 3 cores 14 and drilled holes for the housing of shafts 5 mounted idle on the flywheel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
These shafts have a conical surface intended to cooperate with the hub of an extendable pinion 16 made up of several similar sections. A plate 4 provided with its planet wheels which mesh on the one hand with such an extendable pinion and on the other hand with an inner ring gear, constitutes a coupling mechanism already used for other purposes by the author of the present invention. It makes it possible to couple, by the axial operation of the shaft 5, the plate 4 with the ring gear 12, thanks to the fact that the enlargement of the extendable pinion makes it impossible to transmit the movement by gearing, the meshing being made incorrect. .
Another mode of coupling which can constitute a variant of the invention is shown to the right of FIG. 1.
There is shown there three brake shoes 17 inside the ring 12. The latter no longer has internal teeth but a smooth surface against which the jaws 17 come to rest. 18 is a split annular spring which tends to return the three jaws to the center in a groove of which it is fitted.
It will be understood that these jaws can also be controlled by a conical shaft movable axially.
In any case, cone shafts 5 can be controlled by levers 19 mounted on the flywheel 3 and actuated by a bell-shaped cam 24. integral with a ring 20 and a clip 22. On the ring 20 a ring 23 can slide by the action of a fork 25. The fork 25 and the fastener 22 are each connected by appropriate kinematic connections to the control screw 33. These connection mechanisms are not shown.
In figure 2 there is shown a crank knob 9 although there is none in figure 1 that is @
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
located on the axial cutting plane. This button is guided in a pad 39 which is itself freely adjusted in a circular groove 40 made in a ring 38. This ring is guided by its inner cylindrical periphery, and by means of a ball bearing 29, on the hub 28 of a plate 26. This hub 28 is eccentric with respect to the axis 27 of the plate 26 by an amount equal to that of which the axis 27 is eccentric with respect to the axis of the shafts 8 and 21.
The plate 26 is movable around the axis 27 of its outer cylindrical periphery thanks to the fact that it is guided, by this circumference, in a rib 41, circular, but of eccentric axis 27, provided in part 2 of the housing.
The movement of the plate 26 in this fixed guide is determined by a control screw 33 connected by a connecting rod to a button 32 fixed to the plate 26. 37 and 35 are part of the linkage mechanisms existing between the shaft. control and the cam rings 20 and 23, as well as a groove 36 and a pin 36 ', shown separately, on the face of the wheel 37 (FIG. 3).
The operation is as follows:
The cam 20 is maintained in an invariable position with respect to the steering wheel when the control 33 does not act on the connection point 22. But this control can vary the angular position of the ring 20 and the position along it. axis of the ring 23. The actual cam 24 integral with the ring 20 is constructed in such a way that it pushes the lever 19 towards the plate 3 once per revolution. This results in a pulling of the shaft 5 which has the effect of enlarging the pinion 16 and securing the plates 4 with their crowns 12. However, this securing only takes place for one group at a time, and while the hump 24 of the cam passes in front of one of the four
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
levers of the construction shown.
It will be understood that while one of the rings is secured to its plate, their assembly constitutes a planetary wheel whose axis is driven by the flywheel 3 but which continues to be movable on its guide 130 However, the assembly 4 and 12 does not cannot rotate if button 9 is engaged in groove 40 and if the latter is centered, because it is then kept at an invariable distance from axis 8, 21.
The reaction of the shaft 8 tends to produce a rotation on itself of the crown wheel 12, in the same direction as that of the flywheel and consequently of the plate 4 carrying the button 9: It results from this tendency to turn. rotation that the button 8 exerts, by its bearing 39, a radial pressure against one or the other of the walls of the groove 40, and that the ring 38 starts to rotate on its ball bearing by the effect of the virtual friction created by this pressure between the pad and this wall. The torque which tends to rotate the crown 12 thus being balanced by the radial reaction of the ring 38, everything happens as if this crown were integral with the flywheel. It therefore drives the pinion 7 without rolling on it, which provides what is called direct drive in the case of automobiles.
This direct grip would only last a quarter of a turn for each group of plates and crowns, 'these groups taking turns at each quarter turn, if things were not set so that when the rain re 40 is centered, the ring 23 is found to have slid axially so as to replace the cam 24 in its action on the levers 19 and so as to keep them all together in the position for which the four shafts 5 provide the suspension. said direct socket. It would in fact be pointless to constantly operate these clutches, the arrangement of which is primarily intended to vary the speeds, as will be explained.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
As soon as, by operating the screw 33 and the connecting rod
31, we create an eccentricity of the groove 40, the links not shown which exist between the mechanism 35-37 and the fork 25 cause the ring 23 to withdraw to let the cam 24 control the levers 19. It determines the 'clutching the plates and crowns every quarter of a turn if there are four similar mechanisms on the flywheel as here, every sixth of a turn if there are six, etc.
It will be understood that the ring 38, while having a given eccentricity relative to the frame, can continue to rotate on its ball bearing, a rotation which has no other purpose than to reduce the work of the friction. The eccentricity inevitably creates a minimal sliding of the pads 39 in the groove 40. This does not affect its role, which is to produce an oscillatory movement of each of the buttons 9; Indeed, the instantaneous positions of their respective centers are at the intersections of the circular trajectories imposed on these centers by the shafts 5 with the eccentric circumference led by the middle of the groove 40.
The centers of the buttons are therefore constrained to approach and to move away from axis 8 in their movement around it, so that their movement of revolution around this axis 8 is accompanied for each of them by a oscillation around its axis 5. This oscillation can be substantially sinusoidal for a suitable diameter of the groove 40.
The cam 24 is constructed so as to secure each group of plate and crown when its button 9 performs the quarter-oscillation during which its speed around axis 5 is the most constant.
It follows from this that a certain proper rotational movement is given to each crown 12 during the time that it has
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
an action on the pinion 7. It will be understood that depending on the direction of this rotation, the speed of the pinion 7 may be greater or less than that of the flywheel.
To obtain the reduced intermediate speeds necessary in an automobile, the part of the oscillation in which the button 9 moves in the direction which gives a reduction will be chosen. This is the case when the crown turns in the same direction as the flywheel. It is evident that a given eccentricity corresponds to a certain amplitude of the oscillatory movement and that the proper rotation of a ring on itself during the same fraction of the oscillation depends directly on this amplitude. . When the eccentricity increases, it happens that the proper rotation of the crowns completely cancels the drive rotation of the planetary movement, so that the shaft 8 is stationary.
If the eccentricity is then increased, the effect due to the proper rotation of the crowns outweighs the driving effect, so that the pinion 7 assumes a speed in the opposite direction to that of the flywheel. It is the reverse gear.
Since the screw 33 can be controlled little by little, it will be appreciated that the speed ratio can vary continuously from a negative value to the positive value of the direct drive.
It should be noted that, in its movement of eccentricity, the axis of the hub 28 and of the groove 40 describes a circular trajectory around the axis 27. The chord of the arc described on this trajectory and which determines the eccentricity changes direction. It follows that the azimuth for which the cam 24 must come into action must vary with the eccentricity. This is why a connection is provided between the clip 22 and the control 33 in order to vary the timing angle of the cam relative to the casing,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
so that it is always the best part of the oscillation that is used.
When the mechanism has four buttons, the speed of the crowns on a quarter turn varies only from 0.707 V to V, if V is the maximum speed. The number of buttons can be greater than four which gives less variation in speed.
The planet gears 15 can be guided in the same material as the plates 4. One of the variants has already been pointed out as to the means of securing the plates and rings, and comprising brakes 17. Another variant may consist in the mounting of scales on the plates 4 inside the crowns 12, rockers having at least one tooth that the control causes to penetrate into the internal teeth of the crown.
