"MACHINE PARLANTE "
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

"TALKING MACHINE"
The object of the present invention is a speaking machine which can be used simultaneously or at the choice of a record phonograph and of an apparatus for reproducing photographic sound recordings (sound films). By sound film reproduction is meant more especially the reproduction of purely sound recordings (without images of objects) and the support used for the phonogram is preferably made of a narrow film of paper or of any non-flammable material, so that the apparatus is suitable for domestic uses.
The invention essentially resides in that the reels for winding and unwinding the film, contrary to the usual arrangements, are not mounted on a horizontal shaft.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
but on a vertical or almost vertical shaft, which at the same time constitutes the axis of the disc holder plate.
In the attached drawing, A designates the common shaft, SI and S2 the film winding and unwinding reels F. Between: Points P1 and P2, is the film feed mechanism and the window for scanning optics of the phonograph carried by the film, These elements not forming the subject of the invention, they have not been shown in the drawing. T designates the disc tray. The optical exploration of the photographic recording of sounds is carried out in a known manner at the hub of a photocell and the exploration of the disc is obtained by means of a needle, and preferably with the 'using a pick-up which can be connected to the amplifier device used for the photocell.
The use of the apparatus as a phonograph is obtained in a known manner by placing a disc on the platter and by resting the needle on the disc. to pass to the reproduction of sound films, one removes the disc holder plate, easily removable thanks to two or more rounded nipples or thanks to a prismatic nipple, and one threads the reels of film. 'axis A, the film being guided in a designed way on the guide coils, and through the exploration window. Then, the circuit of the photocell is connected to the amplifier in replacement of the circuit pick-up. Silon uses. movies and discs recorded synchronously, it is possible to obtain the sound reproduction of a disc and a film simultaneously.
Because the film has to be guided from the unwinding reel in an inclined direction relative to the rewinding reel, it has been found advantageous to tilt the plane of the scanning window relative to this. - He reels, which consequently implies the need to incline the axes of the feed wheels relative to that of the reels for the film.
If therefore it seems useful from a constructive point of view to have the axes of the feed wheels in
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
a perfectly vertical direction it may be necessary to incline slightly with respect to the vertical the axis of the film reels, and consequently that of the disc holder plate, so that the plane of this plate will no longer be exactly horizontal, what, moreover, has no influence on the functioning of the apparatus in the reproduction of discs.
For the feeding of the film and the movement of the reels, an arrangement can advantageously be used which makes it possible to successively reproduce several recordings carried by the film and taking place in the opposite direction, without requiring a change of the reels between two successive reproductions. According to this special arrangement, the two reels are constantly urged in the same direction by means of a friction drive, and this independently of one another and independently of the direction of rotation of the film at the time. considered, so that at this moment the reel which functions as winding reel obeys the friction control, while the other reel, functioning as unwinding reel, turns under the effect of the traction of the film in the opposite direction of its friction control.
Of course, this direction of rotation of the axis of the reels, determined once and for all in the apparatus, will be chosen so that it corresponds to the usual direction of rotation of phonograph records.
In this arrangement, the two coils are mounted on two pins threaded one into the other, each of them being connected independently of the other by means (1'a friction plate corresponding to a drive disc of the The apparatus, coupled to the motor. If, after removing the film reels, the phonograph disc is then fixed on the inner shaft which protrudes upwards, it may happen that the friction coupling obtained by means of the friction plate is insufficient to drive the disc holder plate without sliding. to avoid this drawback and according to the invention, the coupling between the axis of the plate holder and the drive disc is made positive by locking as soon as
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
that we move from photographic reproduction to reproduction by discs.
According to another embodiment of the present invention, it is possible to obtain a reliable drive of the disc holder plate by rigidly coupling the two axes of the spools threaded into one another. As a result, the two friction couplings corresponding to the two axes act simultaneously on the disc carrier, so that by choosing. properly frictional pressure prevents slippage of the backing pad. This coupling can be obtained for example by means of a cylindrical sleeve carrying on the one hand the disc holder plate and resting on the other hand on each of the pins threaded one into the other, with sufficient friction so that said cylindrical sleeve prevents their relative rotation.
As indicated previously, the pick-up can be connected to the amplifier used for the photocell.
According to the invention, it is also possible to combine the apparatus for recording and reproducing sounds and speech with a radio receiver, so that the receiving station, as well as the device for reproducing sound films and picking up up of the phonograph can be connected to a common amplifier.
