<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Manufacturing process allowing the introduction into aluminum alloys, in a homogeneous manner, of certain metals and products obtained"
The previous work of MM. Berthelemy and de Montby have established, as is apparent, in particular from French patents 610,464 of May 11, 1925, 634,751 of May 20, 1927 and 659,240 of December 13, 1927, which it is possible to incorporate in a homogeneous manner, in aluminum or in an aluminum alloy, a fairly large amount of cadmium using a vehicle of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
cadmium, magnesium.
Whereas, prior to the work in question, no homogeneous incorporation of cadmium had ever been achieved in aluminum and its alloys, experience has shown that this incorporation could be obtained with a absolute certainty, by implementing the aforementioned means.
MM. Berthelemy, de Montby and Pouvreau have now recognized, while continuing their research, that the process mentioned above was of more general application and that it made it possible to obtain the incorporation, of a homogeneously, with aluminum or its alloys, of metals other than cadmium, metals which, up to this day, have been incorporated in a non-homogeneous manner and they recognized that the application of this means general made it possible to obtain alloys with special physical or chemical characteristics.
The object of the invention is the medium in general consisting in producing the incorporation, in a homogeneous manner, into aluminum or in its alloys, of other metals (which, by the methods previously used, occur. found incorporated in a non-homogeneous manner), said general means consisting of using magnesium as the carrier of the metal to. to incorporate.
The subject of the invention is also a new industrial product consisting of an aluminum alloy in the composition of which there is a metal (lead) capable of giving said alloy special properties, said addition metal being incorporated into the alloy. the alloy in a homogeneous way, thanks to the application of the vehicle retort magnesium.
In general, the alloys thus obtained can undergo any mechanical treatment (rolling, forging, drawing, stamping, drawing, etc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
or else be melted into a mold.
By way of example only of one embodiment of the invention, the method of preparing an aluminum alloy containing lead will be described:
In a plumbago crucible brazed with magnesia, the aluminum is melted. The molten bath is descaled by the usual methods, after which a magnesium-lead alloy is incorporated therein.
The amount of magnesium thus added should be 0.80 to 1% of the total aluminum load; the amount of pure lead added should be 1.50 to .2% of the total charge.
When the magnesium-lead alloy is completely melted, the mass is stirred vigorously and the bath is cleaned again. The casting is then carried out by the usual methods.
This incorporation of magnesium and lead can also be done by the successive or simultaneous introduction of magnesium and lead.
The alloy thus prepared exhibits perfect homogeneity, the homogeneous distribution of lead being able to be explained by the fact that the mag @ sium-lead equilibrium diagram exhibits a limited solid solution of lead in magnesium.
Such an alloy behaves very well when it is deaf to various natural corrosion agents (humidity, sea water, salt mist, etc.).
Alternate corrosion tests carried out in seawater, the oxidizing properties of which were enhanced by an addition of 10% hydrogen peroxide at 20 volumes, gave the following figures:
