<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
La fig. 3 représente une modalité de l'invention re- présentée déjà par la fig. 2;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"AUTOMATIC MACHINE FOR IE ADJUSTING THE ELECTRIC ARCS"
It is known, many types of machines for adjusting arcs, in particular those intended for electric welding with ara; most of the recommended devices employ either a motor influenced directly by the voltage or intentd characteristics of the are or a clutch system intended to produce the forward, stop or reverse movements of the system. power supply of the electrode.
In electric arc welding, the electrode is most generally formed by a metal wire; in this case, the motor member acts on a driving wheel by means of a mechanical device
The present invention is equally applicable to this
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
last case than the control of any electric arc.
It is particularly characterized by the fact that the arc voltage being opposed to a fixed voltage, the difference, positive or negative, is used to act in the appropriate direction on the control motor members.
The differential effect is already used by adjustment relays mounted on certain types of automatic machine; the machine produced according to the present invention completely eliminates these checking devices, the corrective effect is faster and the use of delicate devices is avoided,
The present invention is represented by Figures 1 and 2 in two different variants which are likely to give the desired results,
In fig. 1, the aro power supply circuit is made up on the one hand by connection 1 leading to the nozzle 2 which allows the electrode wire 3 to pass.
The arc springs between this electrode 3 and the part 4 which is connected by a connection 5 to the other part of the current-generating maohine.
From the nozzle 2 also leaves a connection 6 which ends at one of the terminals 7 of the armature 8 of a small motor, the windings of which alone are shown schematically in fig 1; the other terminal 9 of the armature is connected by a connection 10 to the cursor 11 of a potentiometric resistor 12.
This potentiometric resistor is supplied by a constant voltage source with suitable polarity corresponding to the polarity of the aro power source, the two voltages being in opposition.
The excitation of the small motor, shown as a shunt winding 13 for clarity, is connected to the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
constant voltage source terminals and a rheostat is provided
14 which makes it possible to adjust the speed independently of the operation of the motor armature, The motor shaft controls by a suitable mechanical device the wheels 15 and 16 which feed the wire electrode
For an adjustment determines, if the arc is crossed,
the voltage at the terminals of the axis is lower than the voltage opposed by the potentiometer 1S in the branch included between the cursor 11 and the positive polo the Gourant in 1 armature of the motor is such that its direction determined the rotation of 1? Induced in the direction corresponding to the spacing of the electrode from the part,
If the voltage of the are approaching the voltage of the potentiometer, the motor slows down and stops as soon as two opposing voltages are equal.
As soon as the voltage of the are exceeds the voltage of the potentiometer, the current in the armature of the motor is reversed and it is the same for the rotation of the motor which advances the electrode towards the part,
It can be seen that the armature of the motor follows all the fluo- tuations of the voltage at the terminals of the arc around a determined value, this latter value being able to be fixed in advance by the simple operation of the cursor 11.
It will thus be possible to adjust the length of the arc by a succession of advancements ;, stops and retreats of the electrode. At. at the start of the operation, the no-load voltage of the machine is higher than the welding speed voltage, the motor rotates in the correct direction to advance the eleotrode until contact with the workpiece; at this moment the voltage at the edges of the aro is zero and the motor reverses its rotation to move aside the eleotrode and start the arc.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Fig. 2 represents a variant; it will be noted that the armature 8 of the motor is placed in bypass on the anxiety source and that the excitation winding 13 of this same motor has been placed in its place.
This winding was designed to withstand a high intensity; it will be a winding of the type of the series windings mounted on electric motors,
In order to be able to adjust the speed of the motor, a rheostat 14 has been placed at the terminals of this excitation winding, which shunts part of the current at the will of the operator,
It can be seen that this assembly gives substantially the same results as the preceding one and that the rotation of the motor will follow all the variations of the arc; indeed, the direction of current in the excitation and its value will be variable like the length of the arc,
Fig. 3 represents a form of the invention already represented by FIG. 2;
in fact, to increase the mechanical power available on the shaft of the armature 8 of the motor intended to drive the electrode 3, a small auxiliary generator 17 is used which, in a way, plays the role of amplifier relay,
The winding 13 becomes the excitation winding of the small auxiliary generator 17 and this winding 13 is thus traversed by a current which varies in size and direction and depending on the characteristics of the aro as has been explained. upper.
The auxiliary generator 17 has an armature 18 with two brushes 19 and 20 and it is driven by any motor 21. The rotation of the armature of the generator in the field produced by the winding 13 determines the induction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
an electro-motive force which is used to supply the armature 8 of the motor intended for the electrode conduit ;, the shunt excitation winding 22 of which is preferably connected to the constant voltage source with interposition of a control hostat 23.
It appears that the direction of rotation of the armature 8 of the electrode descent motor will be, as well as its speed of rotation, completely dependent on the characteristics of the arc, and that, as a result of the suitable choice of the generator auxiliary 17 it is possible to have at the terminals 19 = 20 of the armature 18 a greater power than that which can be obtained directly by placing a member of the electrode descent motor in branch 6 - 11 of the following diagrams freeze, l and 8
It appears that the motor shown in the diagrams is of a common type and that it would be possible to add special windings to it without prejudicing the invention itself.
it is obvious that the motor can drive any type of electrode supply. whatever the intermediate mechanical device.
@
It is quite evident that the potentiometer has been indicated only as a means of obtaining conveniently a tension opposable to the tension of the aro; the same end can be achieved by the direct employment of any source such as? adjustable voltage generator, rechargeable battery etc ....
