<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Improvements to grain cleaning machines"
The present invention relates to machines for cleaning grains of wheat or the like prior to milling or grinding, and its general object is to provide a simple and highly efficient machine which will subject the grain to thorough cleaning and cleaning actions. brushing by means of stationary and rotating brushes cooperating with rollers, and which comprises a device producing ventilation or suction means, arranged so as to effectively remove from the grain any material not admitted and to smooth the delivery of a high quality sample of perfectly cleaned grain.
Many wheat varieties have a furrow extending longitudinally to the kernels, in which dust and other foreign matter are partially liable to lodge. Foreign matter usually collects in the beard
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of grain and in depressions of rough or uneven surfaces, and most of it the grains have a certain amount of germ fiber adhering to these grains.
Perm @ the many types of grain cleaning machines in existence today, for the most part, as far as is known, are only capable of dislodging and removing all dust and foreign matter out of the groove, beard and rough surfaces of the grain. grain nor to completely remove the fiber of the germa.
Another defect of many existing grain-cleaning machines, incorporating otherwise movable or rotating brushes, is that the bristles of the brushes are subject to rapid and uneven asaration, which results in poor cleaning effacement and demands. frequent replacement of brushes. This is due to some extent to the shape and arrangement of the brushes and associated parts, and so in large part this should be considered to be due to the fact that the grain is fed to the brushes in the current year. relatively thick, so that the various parts of each brush have to do more or less work and are thus subject to more or less wear.
If any distribution da. grain if the actuating surface of the brush takes place, it is effected by the brush itself during the cleaning operation. In all cases, it has been found, in many kinds of brush cleaning machines, that the bristles are quickly cut and unevenly worn,
One of the special battles of the present invention
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is to provide advanced cleaning devices in a grain cleaning machine which will ensure the removal of all dust and foreign matter from the groove, beard and rough surfaces of the grain, as well as qae out of the remaining sur faces of it.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved means for delivering grain to the cleaning device of a grain cleaning machine, whereby the grain is evenly distributed to the cleaning members in a relatively thin stream or web. wide so that the bristles of the brushes receive a minimum of fatigue and that the asare mowing which would occur is uniform over the entire surface of the faces of the brushes in action or cleaned.
A further bat of this invention is to provide an improved machine for cleaning grain in which the grain, from the lead where it is fed to the first: cleaning device until it reaches its point of discharge, is maintained. in the form of a web or layer, in a relatively wide, but thin layer, so as to receive in the most effective and complete way the cleaning, brushing or the like treatment (s) and to allow the aspiration to operate with the best result.
The bats mentioned above and others, as well as other features of the present invention will however be explained in detail in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
following description, together with the accompanying drawings which show a practical embodiment of this invention In these drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation, half in section, of diane machina making the present improvements. The section is taken approximately along the line I-I of FIG. 3, and some parts have been omitted or cut away for clarity of the drawing. Fig. 2 is a sectional plane of the machine, approximately taken along line II-II of FIG. 3, omitting certain parts for clarity of the drawing. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section taken approximately along the central line of the machine. Fig. 4 is an end vae; FIG. 5 is an enlarged cross section of a stationary brush. Fig. 6 is a view, on an enlarged scale, of a feed roller or grain distributor.
A machine according to the present invention comprises a main casing 2 of suitable shape and dimensions. On the roof, near the roof of the envelope, preferably behind and extending over the entire width of this envelope, there is a hopper or feed compartment 3 in which the grain to be milked r is brought by a corridor of admission 4.
this corridor can have a central branch 6 and two lateral branches 7 adjusted by suitable regulators (not shown) so that the grain
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
arriving is distributed uniformly over the entire width of hopper 3,
At the bottom of the hopper there is a horizontal distribution roller or alimentate 9 through which the grain is distributed, in the form of a sideways and uniformly thin stream or web, towards a first cleaning device,
This distributor roll is preferably fluted or corrugated and the flutes 11 may extend substantially axially as shown or they may be traced slightly in a spiral direction. The hopper peat have a coarb extension or plate 12 extending around the lower arc of the roller 9, and a small hinged regulating plate 13 to be resiliently pressed against the roller by a spring 14 so as to adjust the delivery rate on of the hopper.
The first cleaning device preferably comprises a drum roller 16 extending lengthwise and horizontally in the casing 2. This roller may be solid and made of wood, where it may well comprise a certain number of pulleys. or cross-braces 17 spaced lengthwise and attached to a shaft 18, with cross-sectional wooden blocks 19 enclosed in segments and attached to the braces.
The outer periphery of the roll is of a preferably roughened nature and this can be achieved by rolling emery or similar material in the form of a sheet or emery cloth or the like, or by applying a cement coating. emery, or the like, by means of a brush.
The periphery of
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
roll may however be covered with a metallic net or the like. the arc or lower part of the roller 16, is adapted to a brush 21 in the form of cross-sectional segments, which is mounted and remains stationary in the casing, at the longitudinal edge of this brush, which may be called the edge front, being approximately in the vertical alignment of the gap between the roller 9 and its regulating plate 13 so that the current or. The layer of grain coming from the hopper falls on the cleaning device where the front edge of the brush meets the roller 16.
The brush 21 consists of a number of longitudinal blocks or bottom pieces 22 having suitable bristles 23 extending inwardly of the brush in a radial direction with respect to the roller 16. The blocks can be fixed to curved corners 24 or the like by means of screws 26 and nuts 27 and the various angles can be connected to each other by rods 28, in order to form a frame, by means of which the brush can be fitted in one piece relative to roller 16 and to compensate for any wear of the bristles.
According to the adjustment means, the) ends of the rods before passing through parallel slots 29 of the ends of the casing 2 and be threaded to receive the clamping nuts 31. In addition, the blocks 22 can, if desired , be individually adjusted in order to maintain the exact concavity of the working surface of the graining brush and to ensure
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
that it is uniformly spaced from the periphery of the roller 16. This adjustment can be carried out by inserting strips of trim between the angles 24 and the bottoms of the blocks.
Guard plates 32 may be attached to the leading edge and the rear edge of the brush to prevent adjacent bristles from being coapped or damaged by grain or twisted by the rotation of roller 16.
Another plate 33 may extend upward from the leading edge of the brush to the wall of the envelope, in order to prevent grain from passing behind the brush 21.
The roller 16 is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow in FIG. 3, and thus toasting, the grain is subjected to a very thorough premie cleaning which effectively dislodges the pot and the light particles of bran from the grain.
The grain having received this initial treatment still comes out in the form of a relatively thin web out of the rear edge of the brush 21 and enters a coaloir that passage 36 leading it to a second cleaning device where the grain is still cleaned. and also polite.
Passing from the first processing device to the second, the grain is subjected to an air draft, where what is generally called in the art, a suction, in the beater to remove all the pots and foreign material managed. dislodged by the cleaning device. In this bat, the coaloir can be formed of front and rear partitions provided with slots oa of baffles 37, 38 preferably constructed of thin metal foil.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
perforated or. with slits 39 the dimensions of which are insuffi- cient for the grain to pass through them.
A fan 41 may be disposed in a suitable position to produce draft through an air inlet 42, through partitions 37 and 38 and the path of grain movement in the aisle. An adjustable flap or register 40 may be associated with the air intake orifice, to allow adjustment of the suction. The fan can be housed in a hood 43 having a discharge pipe 44 for the exhaust of dust and relatively light impurities. Tons heavier items, such as seeds, stunted kernels and the like fall into a collecting chamber 46 having a. helical conveyor 47 which leads these impurities out of the casing.
A cap guard 48 may extend above an upper portion of roll 16 to isolate dispensing roll 9 and grain falling therefrom from suction.
The polishing or second cleaning device consists of a rotating brush 49 mounted horizontally on a shaft 50 and preferably in the form of a roller comprising longitudinal blocks 52 of arcuate shape with bristles 53 extending radially outward. . The associated stationary brush 54 is similar to that of the first cleaning device and comprises blocks 2Za, with bristles 23a extending inwardly and, which are attached to curved angles 24a which are connected by rods 28a. so that the brush 54 and / o has the individual blocks 22a can
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
be added in a manner similar to that of brush 21.
In its passage between the rotating cylindrical brush 49 and the stationary concave brush 54 the large still soas the form of a current where a relatively thin coach is carefully rolled and brushed and aunt dust remaining in the furrow, or the beard of the grain is effectively dislodged, and the grain receives a very polished finish.
Plates 32 may be attached to the longitudinal edges of the brush 54 to prevent the adjacent saws from being coiled by the grain or deformed by the brush roller 49.
The grain having received the polishing and exiting from the rear edge of the brush 54, falls on a plate inclined downwards and forwards and forming the bottom of a delivery compartment of grain 57, and it is meat by gravitation and again in its form analogous to a relatively thin current, towards a discharge cellar 58 placed at the bottom and in front of the envelope. The communication between the chamber and the discharge weir can be regulated by a valve in the form of a pivoting trap door 59. influenced by a counterweight lever 61 and arranged to provide a smooth and uniform delivery. da grain in the dump cellar.
A final aspiration of grain can be obtained by providing for an introduction of air, attracted by the vent through an opening 62, located above the discharge cellar 58, and in the opposite direction to the grain flow, and qai then passes to the @@ ut by a suction passage 64, formed in front of the en-
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
veloppe by a partition 66. This passage communicates at its upper part with the collecting chamber mentioned above. The upper part 66a of the partition 66 can be adjusted vertically.
By arranging so that the grain, in its various treatments, either in the form of a stream, or a broad but relatively thin web or coache, it is ensured that each grain receives individually a complete cleaning, polishing and vacuuming, thus ensuring results in a perfectly clean finished grain and a satisfactory polish.
Further advantages are that any wear on the bristles of the brushes is limited to their tips and is uniform over the entire acting surfaces of the brushes. It has been proven that after several months of operation under normal working conditions, the bristles showed no appreciable wear and that the wooden blocks could not be daring.
The bristles will undoubtedly wear out over time, but the asare will be uniform, so that an effective cleaning and polishing action can be obtained during the life of the brushes.
Circular flanges 16a and 49a may extend around roaleaax 16 and 49, at their ends, in order to prevent any saki grain from escaping towards the end of these roaleaax.
Doors 67, 68, 69 and windows 70, 71, 72 73 may be provided at suitable places in the casing to allow access to the interior parts and inspection of the operation of the machine.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
Obviously, any suitable means can be provided for controlling the moving parts of the machine.
In the drawings, the shaft 50 of the brush 49 carries a pulley 74 for belt drive aa by means of a counter shaft and is connected by a belt and pulley transmission 76 to the fan shaft 41a. . A further belt and pulley transmission 77 can connect the shaft 50 to the conveying shaft 47. Additional belt and pulley drives 78 and 79 can be provided for the roller 9 and the roller 16. .
