<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
figs.

In accordance with fig.l an generator-absorbear 58 is in communication, by the eondait 60, with an condensea.r 56, cooled by a coil 68 and in communication by the duct 64 with an evaporator 52. comprising an insulated tank 66 and exposed evaporation tables 68, in which a cooling liquid circulates over time) and which cools a compartment 54. The arrangement of FIG. 1 is schematic and in practice the condenser is above the level of the generator, while the evaporator is above the level of the condenser.
The generator-absorber, as shown in fig. 7 is preferably in the form of a cylindrical tank G10 which is laid hot ,,, and supported on a group of panels oa walls G12, which subdivide the tank into compartments and, serve as heat conducting elements, for the trans - heat transfer through the mass of absorbent material

The control system.
Some water. circulates uninterruptedly through the two condenser coils 62 and 90, which are connected by conduit 98, in which is placed a jet or drive pump having a fine suction chamber 94 and a throat 96 in which a jet water is discharged. The pump constantly tends to produce a vacuum in a conduit 98. A bellows 100 is connected to the conduit 98 and actuates the valve 84 its lever means 104, which comprises forked arms 106 having their pivot at 108, and a central arm 110. qai extends into housing 86, the central arm being secured to the chamber by a soafflet seal 112.
The pivots 108 are mounted by a second fork lever 114 having its pivot at 116 and surrounding the bellows seal 112, which expands and contracts against the force of a spring 130, in accordance with changes in pressure in the housing. 86. The expansion of the bellows seal 112 lowers the lever 114 in order to raise an arm 121 and lift a vacuum adjusting valve 124, from a rib seat 126, and the contraction of the soaflet raised the arm 114 to allow the vacuum soapape to close.
The gas supply to the burner is controlled by the soapape 130 attached to its bellows 132, the interior of which is connected to the vacuum duct 98.
The vacuum elbow system includes a high temperature safety duct 136, the end of which is ordinarily closed by a weak plug 140 placed in a well, in a vapor jacket 70.
A valve housing 142 containing a choke soapape 144 is interposed in the conduit 92. The valve is hemmed by the spring 152 and closed by the lever 146 actuated by a bellows 156 connected to the refrigerant elbow 64 per year of the conduit. 158.
System operation.
To turn on the appliance, the standby is

lit and 1 water is admitted into the pipe 92. At this time the generatear-absorbear is saturated with ammonia and the evaporator tables 68 are full of liquid ammonia. The pressure in the vapor envelope 70 is low, and by its reason the soafflet 112 is collapsed so as to close the vacuum soapape 124. The vacuum established by the water seal flattens the soafflet 100 so as to close the vapor valve 84, and at the same time flattens the bellows 132 in order to fill gas with the gas. burner 82. The generatear-absorbear is then heated as explained above.
Fig. 3 shows the system conditions, shown as a function of time, by the operating cycle. In this figure the abscissas represent time and the ordinates represent the pressures in kilograms per square centimeter poar toates the curves, except that of the tem- peratare of the enclosure to be kept cold, in which the ordinates represent degrees centigrade. When heating is started, the pressure of ethyl chlorare rises rapidly as shown in part 400-402 of the vapor curve. Strontiam chloride is quickly heated with ethyl chlorare, as shown in part 406-408 of the condenser coarb.
In 408 the strontiam- chlorare begins to distill off the ammonia, which is condensed in the chamber 56, in a constant proportion, by the cooling water. This maintains a substantially constant pressure in the arfimonia circulating as shown in part 408-410 of the refrigerant coil. Due to the fact that ammonia continually absorbs its latent heat of transformation. In ethyl chlorare, the latter tends to remain at a constant pressure, as shown by 402-412 on the vapor curve.
At point 410 essentially all the ammonia (qai) could be vaporized) at this temperature and pressure, was distilled. As a result the release of ammonia
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
ceases and the pressure of the ethyl chlorare rises sharply) as shown in part 412-414 of the coarba of vapear.
The spring 120 is put to a tension corresponding to a pressure of about 12 kilograms per square centimeter in the vapor circuit, which is represented by point 414.
When this pressure is reached the bellows 112 has expanded sufficiently to open the vacuum valve 124, allowing the gas soapape 130 to close, and the vapor valve 84 to be opened. This stops the heating period. The opening of the valve 84 allows the circulation

Zion being quickly reduced) as shown in part 41.1-418.de of the vapor curve. Similarly, the sudden immersion of the ar-absorbed gene in cold liquid} reduced the pressure of ammonia as shown (416-42G without the coarb of the refrigerant.
At the low pressure represented by 420, the strontiam-abs'ohlorare absorbs ammonia and produces the. refrigeration in the well cannas way. The latent chalear

This device is provided for the admission of a small quantity of air into the jet chamber 94, in order to

that the air can be continuously pushed out of the chamber by the jet and thus keep the jet agitated to maintain intimate contact with the throat.
The constant temperature soapape which is kept in the chamber keep cold, can be regulated by adjusting the tension of the auxiliary spring 16Q by means of the hand-driven cam 162, so as to oppose the sag of the soafflet 156. As the ethyl chlorare pressure is reduced, the spring 120 gradually flattens the bellows 112. When the absorbent is completely saturated with ammonia, heat is not released. more yielded to ethyl chlorare, and therefore the pressure of ethyl chlorare gradually falls, as indicated by 424-426 on the vapor curve.
When the pressure reaches point 426, the spring 120 has flattened the soafflet 112 enough to close the vacuum soapape 124 and a new period.

heating is started. The described cycle repeats itself automatically. As shown in Fig. 3 the pressure of ethyl chloride and that of ammonia are all very close to the same value.
The combination of the materials, ethyl chlorare, strontiam chlorare and ammonia results in this result, which has the advantage of eliminating the tension on the wall of the general absorbent.
If the generatear-absorbear was overheated for any reason, for example because of ethyl chlorare being out of the steam circuit, the buffer is weak 140

The structure of the condenser.
In fig. 1 The vapor condenser 74 and the refrigerant condenser 56 are shown separately to simplify the explanation of the system, but in practice the two condensers are in heat exchange relationship and form a single structure. in accordance with figs 4 and 5, a drum 010 serves as a reservoir for the entire condensate unit. and foarnit a condensation chamber C12 corresponding to 74 in fig. 1.
This chamber has a 016 steam inlet connection and a C18 steam exhaust connection. In the chamber is arranged a water circulation coil C24, interposed between the intake passage C21 and the exhaust passage C23. This coil corresponds to the two coils 62 and 90 in ladfig. 1. The coil inserts are spaced apart to receive the windings of a similar helical coil C34, which is interposed between the refrigerant inlet C37, and the refrigerant exhaust on its shutter valve C44. This coil corresponds to chamber 56 in fig. 1.
The serpentins C24 and 034 are preferably probed together by an intimate thermal bond. The C44 valve comprises a C45 coape-shaped handle with a C46 intake passage, surrounded by a deformable C48 tabular valve seat.
A cup-shaped diawraq @ e, C50, is welded to the housing housing 045, and has a central spherical protrusion C51, which can be tightened by the seat., By a buffer 052 and a screw 051 ) passing through a crown C56 soadée to the coape 044 with the diaphragm. The soapape body has a C58qai exhaust communicating with an elbow G62b (see
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
figs. 4 and 5) connected to conduit 190.
The flexible diaphragm and the seat of the tabular valve come out constructed of a material having a defined but low elasticity, and a relatively high plasticity, which allows the seat to deform) and thus conform to any irregularity in the shape of the diaphragm allows for exact seating of the diaphragm for low effort. This allows the manufacture of a well-sealed valve without precision in the formation and alignment of the parts.
The opposite end of the condenser may be formed by a similar C60 soapape for charging. The entire condenser can be covered with an insulating layer of felt C66 and a sleeve 068 with end caps C72.
The condenser structure, shown in figs. 4 to 6, has the advantage of emptying itself positively of the liquid ammonia at the end of the heating period and forcing all this ammonia to enter the evaporator.
At the moment when the vapor valve 84 is opened, the condenser coil C34 is filled with the last quantity of liquefied ammonia from the generator-absorber, and as the hot vapor of ethyl chloride enters the chamber. C12. it heats the ammonia in the C34 coil, vaporizing part of the liquid and raising its pressure as represented by part 410-416 of the refrigerant curve, high enough to force the remaining liquid to rise in the evaporator . The coil will be emptied of liquid, because of the formation of capillary plugs in the coil and in the conduit 64, the shape of the conduits being chosen for this purpose.
Although the embodiment of the invention, explained herein, constitutes a preferable form, it goes without saying that other forms can be adopted, coming within the scope of the following claims.
