<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

elements or reciprocating pistons of a crankless motor,
while the other two bearing elements are disposed on opposite sides of the reciprocating axis of the assembly and in sliding contact with the elements. Reciprocating Motion The contacting bearing surfaces are preferably cylindrical although, if desired, as shown in certain embodiments of the invention, the contacting surfaces may be flat or inclined. The bearing elements are preferably mounted such that, for example by pivoting mounting, they are 'self-aligning.'
Other details of the invention will emerge from the following description,
Fig. 1 of the drawing shows a crankless motor of the type disclosed by Michell Patent No. 15756, issued February 5, 1924.
In this motor there are several groups with reciprocating movement and fig. 1 shows two of these groups 20 and 21, The reciprocating groups comprise pistons 24 and 25 moving back and forth in cylinders 22 and 23 and connected by a connecting piece, 26.
The pistons 24 and 25 are provided with sliding bearing elements 30 and 31 which pivot with universal movement with respect to the pistons and which have mating faces 32 and 33 respectively engaging the opposite sides. an oblique plate 35 mounted on a shaft 36 ,.
In the embodiment shown in FIG.
1, the pistons 34 and 25 slide in sylindrical bearings 36 and 57 at the ends of the cylinders. ,, The shaft 36 is rotatably mounted in bearings 40 and 41 and the axial thrust is absorbed by surfaces of axial stops 42 and 43.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The construction described above is shown in the aforementioned patent and the present invention aims to improve the construction and efficiency of guide bearings for reciprocating groups, since in the construction described the bearings. cylindrical 36 and 37 which perform the guiding function for reciprocating groups have not been found entirely satisfactory,
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4, three bearing elements A, B and C. can be seen.
The bearing member A is placed in sliding contact with the outer cylindrical bearing surface 5 of the joint piece 26 and has a cylindrical bearing surface 46 disposed in sliding contact with the surface 45 of the piece. The bearing elements B and C are placed in sliding contact respectively with extensions of the pistons 24, 25 and they have cylindrical bearing surfaces 47 disposed in sliding contact with the cylindrical outer surfaces 48 of the piston. piston extensions,
It is evident that the three bearing elements A, B and C effectively guide the central and lateral parts of the reciprocating group, -
In the embodiment of the invention, shown in FIGS.
5 and 6, a slight modification can be seen in the construction of the side bearing members B and C. In this embodiment the bearing member is provided with a curved outer surface.
49 which is placed in a socket or a seat 50 of corresponding shape. The bearing element shown in fig. 5 and 6 is mounted so that it can slide in its seat and it is therefore self-aligning:
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
tick
In the embodiment shown in fig.
7 and 8, each of the side bearings B or C comprises two sliding bearing elements 51 and 52 placed at an angle to each other and having spherical protuberances 53 and 54 which are mounted in spherical bushings created in the frame 55. The bearing elements 51 and 52 have cylindrical internal surfaces 56 which come into contact with the piston. It is evident that the sliding elements 51 and 52 are self-aligning because of their universal pivot mounting.
Figs. 9 and 10 show a sliding bearing construction intended to cooperate with and guide the junction piece 26. In this construction, a sliding element 60 is mounted by a universal joint at 61 on a block 62 carried. by the motor casing and comprising a spherical bush receiving the spherical bearing part 61 of the sliding member,., The sliding member 60 also has a cylindrical bearing surface 65 which comes into sliding contact. with the outer surface of the junction 26. The block 62 is secured by bolts or otherwise to the casing to the engine and adjustment is made possible by lamellae 66.
Figs. 11 and 12 show a construction similar to FIGS. 9 and 10, but in this form of the invention, the sliding member 60 which cooperates with the joint piece 26 has a flat bearing surface 68 placed in sliding contact with a flat upper surface 69 of the joint piece. .
In fig. 13, the sliding member 60 which cooperates with the junction piece 26 has a V-shaped part 70 provided with converging planar bearing surfaces or
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
inclined 71 and 72 which come into contact with correspondingly shaped bearing surfaces created in a V-shaped groove of the upper surface of the junction piece 26., In FIG. 14, the upper surface of the junction piece 26 has concave bearing surfaces 75 and 76 and the sliding member 60 cooperating therewith has convex surfaces of corresponding shape.
In the embodiment shown in FIG.
15, the junction piece 26 comprises inclined bearing surfaces 80 and 81 which come into contact with the faces of the flat bearing 82 and 83 belonging to two sliding elements 84 and 85 mounted by a joint, universal in a block 86 carried by the motor casing.
The flat and V-shaped guides shown in Figs. 11 to 15 perform the useful function of preventing the) rotation of the reciprocating group around its own axis, a function which is not fulfilled by the guides shown in the other figures.
It follows from the foregoing description that simple, practical and efficient guide bearings are thus obtained for reciprocating groups and that by means of these bearings the reciprocating groups are guided along a correct path of back and forth and are effectively prevented from going out of alignment. In the majority of embodiments of the invention the bearing elements include a universal pivot and are therefore self-aligning.
Although certain special embodiments of the invention have been particularly shown and described, it is obvious that the invention is susceptible of other modifications, and that others change. arrangements in the construction and 1 arrangement of the
