Cet interrupteur est monté sur un axe b3 rapporté par des paliers convenables, et un poida. b2 tend à l'ouvrir. H est un cliquet agencé pour maintenir l'interrupteur dans la position de fermeture et qui, dana cette construction et dans tous les modes de réalisation que 1*on décrira plue loin, excepté celles des figs. 8 et 9, est constitué par. une bande de dilatation différentielle faite de métaux différents et agencée pour venir occuper la position de déclenchement lorsque sa température dépasse une limite prédéterminée:;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

near the engine to be checked.
In its final closed position, this switch connects the three contacts e1 to the motor so as to. give normal operation and is maintained in this position - in antagonism to a force such as a spring or gravity which tends to open it - by a device comprising a winding connected to the conductors of the network, which device is arranged to be triggered when this winding de-energizes. In the example shown, the switch is provided with a spring a2 which tends to open it and with an electromagnet s3 which is excited by a winding s4 connected to two of the phases; the s5 armature of the s3 electro is connected to the switch S.
Figures 2 and 3, which are drawn on a larger scale than figure 1, represent a suitable construction of switch B.
This switch is mounted on an axis b3 reported by suitable bearings, and a weight. b2 tends to open it. It is a pawl arranged to keep the switch in the closed position and which, in this construction and in all the embodiments which will be described further on, except those of Figs. 8 and 9, is constituted by. a differential expansion strip made of different metals and arranged to come to occupy the trigger position when its temperature exceeds a predetermined limit;
this pawl is heated by a heating coil J, a coil of this kind being able to be provided on the main circuit of each phase and being traversed by the current of the motor or by a proportion of this current .. vans the example represented, it There is a heating coil J on each of two of the phases of the distribution network T, and these coils can each heat a separate retaining pawl or they can heat a common retaining pawl H. Two switch arms, each carrying a contact blade b4 arranged to interconnect the pads b1, are mounted, to an axis
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
common b3 and. in the arrangement shown, there is a pawl H for each of the switches B.
However, in certain categories two switches B may have a common axis, a common ratchet lever and a common ratchet (fig.
10 to 16), in which case the aliquet would be heated by two J heating coils.
The pawl H (fig. - 4) is made of a composite bar comprising two metal bands connected to each other, the metal of the band hl located on the far side of the heating coil having a coefficient of less expansion than the metal of the other band h2. The composite strip is fixed by one end to a support h3 and its free end constitutes a pawl intended to engage with the end of the switch arm and to keep the switch closed.
The weights b2 of the switches 3 tend to open these which, in. this example. are closed by hand. A group of switches B can be placed on a distribution board serving the respective motors of a group of motors which are each started and stopped by a switch S.
The fuses are preferably of the interchangeable type and to guard against the inconveniences which could result from neglecting to replace a blown fuse, a device is provided to prevent the switch B from being closed except when the contacts bl are electrically connected. at the ends of a fuse F. This device comprises a latch or locking member 0 which normally. occupies a position such that, when performing the desired maneuver to close switch B, comes into contact with one of the arms of the switch and prevents closing. In the example shown, the end of part Ç abuts against a pin b5 of the switch arm.
Latch C is controlled by an electromagnet c2 whose winding c1 is connected to the mains conductors, on the side of the cables.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
fuses F connected to the motor. Contacts c3 and c4 mounted on the circuit of the winding c1 are arranged to be closed, when the switch B is closed, by a contact element b6 of this switch, just before the pin b5 meets the end. of the latch, [. If fuse F has been inserted and the terminals.!. of. distribution network are energized, the electro c2 will be energized, so that the end of the latch will be brought away from the pin b5. In the closed position of the switch (fig, 3), contacts c3 and c4 are disconnected.
The heating coil J is calculated such that if, when the mechanism occupies the position of fig. 3, the motor was subjected to an overload which persists long enough to raise the temperature of said motor to the prescribed maximum, the temperature and heat that this coil communicates to the pawl H would be such as to cause said pawl to bend upwards (see Fig. 2) and, consequently, tripping of switch B. In this case, the entire overload current would flow through fuse F, which is calculated to melt under the action of this current and cut the connected circuit to the engine, switch S then also opening. The controlled fuse can be calculated to blow under the influence of the normal motor current or under the influence of a current lower than this normal current.
The engine can only be started again afterwards. that the blown fuse F has been replaced and that the switch has been closed. This done, switch S is used to restart and stop the engine,
If preferred, the usual main fuses A can be mounted on the short-circuit closed by the switch B, i.e. in parallel with the fuses F, as shown in fig. 5.
In the embodiment described, switch B is closed by hand, but in some cases it is desirable to
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
is closed automatically and that the opening force is applied automatically when the switch S.
This embodiment is shown in the figs. 6 and 7.
The balancing weight b7 of the switch B2 tends to close the switch and the opening force is supplied by an electromagnetic device D whose armature d2, carried by a lever d4. is connected to the arm b8 of the switch B2, preferably by a spring d3. The. Coil dl of the electr D

Consequently, when the switch B2 is closed, having already been switch 3 closed automatically), the electro D is energized and the spring d3 is Reduced. to a tensile force such that it exerts an opening force on the switch B2; if the pawl H is triggered by the effect of an overload. spring d3 opens switch B2.
In other respects the mode of action is analogous to. that of writing.
The thermal device whereby an overload current persisting for a period of time determines the triggering of the pawl holding the control switch closed could be replaced by a delayed action electromagnetic overload device of any of the types. known. Two examples are shown in figs, 8 and 9.
'Switch B3 is constructed and arranged as written, but pawl H3 is an ordinary pawl controlled by a spring or by gravity and is arranged to be triggered by an electromagnet j1 whose coil Jl is mounted in series with one of the phases as described for the heating coil J. The armature j2 of the electro j1 is carried by a lever loaded with a weight j3 and is connected by a spring e1 to the piston rod !, .2. a dash-pot E whose piston e3 is pierced with a small hole e4 and slides in cylinder 1 containing a liquid such as glycerin. Piston rod

e2 is fitted with an e5 collar.
When the motor current drops

until the lever 3 comes into contact with a stopper 4. The spring tension then lifts the piaton slowly at a speed which is determined by the diameter of the hole e4. If the overload persists for a time, for the prescribed duration ,. the collar e5 acts on the pawl H3 and causes this pawl to move, until it triggers the switch B3.
In other respects, the construction and mode of action are the same as those described in connection with Figs * 1 to 3.
Instead of a dash-pot to limit the movement of the triggering part, a magnetic eddy current brake could be applied, as shown.

The overload tester relating to each motor is mounted in a box K, and the various boxes (fig. 13 and 14) are intended to be connected to a chamber Q enveloping the bus bars q1 connected to the distribution network. by the main switch P, which can be a main switch.
The ordinary main fuses A4 are connected to the bus bars q1 through the terminal connections T, and the switches S4, preferably located near the respective motors, are connected to the terminals t of the respective overload devices and to the motors M4. Switch S4 can be of any suitable type. That shown is of the solenoid operated type comprising a closing coil s8 which, when energized, closes the switch and keeps it closed. Coil s8 is connected to the main conductors of the network by means of a push button switch s9.
When the circuit of the coil s8 is energized and the switch S4 is closed the circuit is established pays a magnetic device s10 which would open this circuit if the current were to fail.
The construction of the overload K control units is shown in figs. 11 to 14.
B4 designates the control switches, two in number. each mounted in isolation on the axis b12 supported by bearings b18 and actuated by a handle b13.
Each control switch has two connected contacts b10 which. when 1 * switch is closed, interconnect the corresponding contacts b11 connected to the respective ends of the monitored fuses F4. In the present example, these are two in number, one on each of two of the three phases.
There is thus a controlled fuse for each switch P4. A4 and F4 fuses are usually of the interchangeable type.

geable as shown and are preferably of the cartridge type filled with powder and wrapped
On axis b12 is wedged. a ratchet lever b14 whose end b15 engages with a ratchet H4 of the composite metal type described in relation to FIG. 4. One end of the pawl is fixed to a support kl carried in isolation by the box K, and the other end is free and bent obliquely and has a slot b16 (Fig. 13) in. which engages the end bl5 of the lever b14. The support k1 has a shape such that it envelops the two coils. heater J4 respectively connected to the two phases.
On the axis is also wedged a locking lever b17 which carries two connected contacts. b20 arranged to interconnect, when switch B4 comes to occupy the closed position, the two contacts c6 and c7 mounted on the circuit of the coil of the electro-locking c8 whose armature C4 constitutes the latch (corresponding at. dea freezes .. 2 and 3) which prevents switch B 4 from being closed. if the F4 fuses are not in position. The end of the armature C4 is arranged to engage with the tooth b19 of the latch unless, by connecting the contactsa., $. 6 and c7, the * contacta b20 complete the circuit of the winding c9 of the electro c8, in which case the framework would be momentarily lifted away from the tooth.
This cannot happen if the corresponding checked fuse F4 is not in position. Winding c9 is connected across two of the phases.
The operation is as follows t
It will be assumed that the distribution board for figa. 15 and 16 is centrally located and arranged to control an M4 engine group. Zee switches arranged in the K boxes relating to the various motors would be closed, and this would indicate that all the F4 controlled fusea are in place. We then put the engines. running as required by the maneuvering. switches- 84, Sil is pro-

If currents are too high on starting, these currents, because of their short duration, would be insufficient to raise the temperature of the heating coil j4 to the degree necessary to operate the pawls H4.
On the contrary. if any of the motors were subjected to a sustained overload, the overload current would supply to the winding j4 of that motor the temperature necessary to transfer heat to the pawl H4 at a rate greater than that at which that heat is dissipated by radiation and conduction. The metals in the heater would then differentially expand to an extent sufficient to bend the pawl H4, until the slot h4 in the end of the pawl disengaged from the end - b15 of the ratchet lever. b14. The switches of the motor overload device would then open under the unbalanced action of gravity.
It can be seen that, during the entire period of normal operation of the motors, the fuses checked are only crossed by weak currents. This is an advantageous feature in that most of the trouble with engine fuses is caused by when the engine is running. these fuses are crossed by the normal current, and that since the melting must take place when the normal current increases to an extent which, if this overload were maintained for a determined time, would damage the motor, the normal current itself must raise the temperature of the fuse to an oxidation point. As a result, these fuses deteriorate continuously.
They lose their conduction power over time and melt for currents lower than those for which they were calculated. These difficulties are overcome by the present invention. A4 fuses are designed to withstand the normal current without overheating, since they are only called to blow in the event of overload.

exceptional ges such as those resulting from short circuits, etc .....; moreover, the A4 fuses are not essential to the practice of the invention and can, if desired, be omitted.
