<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

Electrically operated sorting machine for cards or strips of paper with perforated symbols.
Electrically operated sorting machines are known for cards, cards or strips of paper, provided with perforated symbols, machines in which the control of the closing members for the various sorting compartments is made in the path of the card. through the machine, by means of probing contact devices arranged in front of the various sorting compartments. These control devices only function perfectly when the speed of passage of the plugs does not exceed a determined, relatively low value.
In sorting machines, however, it is generally desirable to pass the cards as quickly as possible through the machine, so that the number of cards sorted per unit of time is as high as possible. In addition the

Arrangement of the sets of contacts in the common path for the various cards or files involves certain difficulties and frequently causes disturbances.
According to the invention these drawbacks of known machines of this type are eliminated by the fact that control mechanisms, mounted on a continuously operated shaft, are set in motion in advance. in a determined order of succession, passing through intermediate control mechanisms which they control, by a rotating shaft in accordance with the various values sensed, to act, in the rest of the limited rotational movement, on the devices used for the selection of the compartments yard in question. The duration of the actuation of the various intermediate control mechanisms is determined by the shaft rotating in accordance with the sensed values, by means of electromagnetic coupling devices controlled by contact devices of the intermediate control mechanisms.
The accompanying drawings schematically show, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention, and all parts of the sorting machine which are not necessary for understanding have been omitted. of the invention.

and in the operating position, the coupling device between the two toothed wheels of the various intermediate control mechanisms,
1 designates the advance mechanism with feeler lever contacts 2 to 5, control magnets 6 to 9 actuated by these contacts and intended for the coupling plates arranged on the continuously rotating shaft 10, and sets of wheels transmission 11 to 14, which act on a common toothed shaft 15.
The coupling devices influenced by the electromagnets 6 to 9 are arranged so that in each coupling process the assistant drive wheels are coupled to the shaft 10 only for the duration of the coupling. a rotation of this shaft. The transmission wheels are provided with a number of teeth corresponding to the added numerical value. For example, the transmission toothed wheel of set 11 has only one tooth, the transmission wheel of set 12 only two teeth, the corresponding wheel of set 13 has four teeth, and the toothed wheel of set 14. eight teeth.
These teeth are arranged on the toothed transmission wheels in such a way that the various groups of teeth engage, during one revolution of the shaft 10, successively with the toothed shaft 15, in so far as they are coupled by excitation. additional control magnets 6 to 9 with the shaft 10 continuously rotating.
A whole series of sets of couplings and gearwheels have been arranged on the toothed shaft, each of which consists of a coupling sleeve 16 axially movable on the shaft 15 and constantly driven by this rotating shaft, and a toothed wheel 17 which is axially fixed but which can rotate on the shaft 15.
The hub of the toothed wheel 17 and the coupling sleeve 16 are provided on their opposite end sides with coupling teeth. In addition, the coupling sleeve 16 has a guide groove 18, in

which engages the forked armature 19 of the assistant coupling magnet 20. Each toothed wheel 17 is engaged with one of the toothed wheels
22 mounted axially fixed on a common shaft 21, but able to rotate on this shaft. The various toothed wheels 22 are each rigidly connected by a sleeve 23 to a plate 24, which controls a contact 26 by a projection 25 and is retained by a spring-loaded stop lever 27, engaging in the zero position in a peripheral hollow
28 of plate 24, in this position.
Beside each toothed wheel 24, there are fixed on the continuously rotating shaft 21, a stop toothed wheel 29, a bush 30 and a cam 31. The wheel 29 can be placed in a drive connection in one. direction of rotation with the toothed wheel 22 by means of a spring-loaded pawl 32 mounted and rotating on this wheel 22.
In the rest position, the pawl 32 is applied by a lateral projection 52 on a fixed stop 53 and is retained out of reach of the teeth of the wheel 29. It is only when, in the movement of the toothed wheel 32 through.
/ the toothed wheel 17, the pawl 3? leaves the stop 53 through its projection 52, this pawl engages in the teeth of the wheel 29 and causes, after termination of the actuating movement of the wheel 22 by the wheel 17, a coupling of the toothed wheel
22 with continuously rotating toothed wheel 29 (fig.
5 and .6).
In the example of execution of FIG. 1, the contact 33 controlled by the cam 31 is located in the circuit of the assistant coupling magnet 20, while the contact 26 is connected by a contact spring to the pole. positive and by the other contact spring to the contact arm 34 ud

Assistant sorting control 35. This mechanism 35, which according to FIG. 1 is a contact arm routed through a series of contacts, has a number of contacts corresponding to the number of sorting compartments 36 and each of which is connected to one of the coils of the sorting magnets. sorting compartment 37.
The other winding end of the various magnets 37 is connected to the negative pole. Each magnet 37 actuates by its frame one of the closing valves 39 of the sorting compartments 36. In addition, a cam 40 has been placed on the shaft 21, which acts on a control contact 41 for the plug transport magnet 42. The contact plates 31 are arranged on the continuously rotating shaft 21 so as to act by their cams, in order of succession, on the auxiliary contacts 33, so that the various switching mechanisms intermediate controls are also coupled, in order of succession, with the advance mechanism.
Likewise, the contact arms 34 of the sorting control mechanisms 35 are offset from one another on the same shaft 43 so as to arrive successively on the first contact, together with the coupling of the advance mechanism with the feed mechanism. intermediate control, and to be thus actuated by the continuously rotating shaft 43 in an uninterrupted manner on their contacts. The shafts 21 and 43 rotate at the same speed, while the shaft 10 rotates significantly faster than the shaft 21. The plug transport magnet 42 actuates the pins in their guide way above the sorting compartments 36. , in which these sheets advance in a known manner at a uniform speed by means of conveyor rollers.
The movement of each of the intermediate control mechanisms and the sorting control mechanisms, added to a unit value of digits, matches in time with the path of the plug from one sorting compartment to the next compartment. The in

Feeler lever contacts 2 to 5 are arranged with the feeler levers 44, between the plug receptacles 45 and the sorting compartments 36 of the machine, above the guide track of the plugs. The game of the-. The same feeler, preferably comprising four feeler levers assigned to the combination values 1, 2, 4, 8, and the contacts 2 to 5, is arranged transversely to the guide track of the plugs, in a movable and adjustable manner.
In the embodiment of FIG. 2, instead of the contact lever devices, there are provided push-pull mechanisms 46, the actuating magnet windings 50 of which are coupled in parallel to the coupling magnet windings 20. Each of these control mechanisms on occasions 46 has two contact levers 47,48; the lever 47 rubs on one of the contact segments 49 connected to one of the springs of the contact 53, and the lever 48 rubs, in the diagrammatic illustration in the opposite direction of rotation, on the various contacts connected to the windings sorting compartment magnets 37.
To generate the emission of pulses from the actuating magnets of the various sorting control mechanisms 46, use is made of the contact plate 40, located on the shaft 21 and regularly closing the contact at short intervals of time. 51, and this plate 40 simultaneously controls the closing contact 41 for the transport magnet 42 of the cards. The magnets 50 of the sorting control mechanisms are started up in order of succession and in accordance with the time with the excitation of the adjoining coupling magnets 20, when the contact 33 is closed. by the plate 31. Each of the coupling magnets 2'0 is only energized when the assistant sorting control mechanism 46 is activated for the duration of the closing of the contact 35.

The contacts 26 are connected by one spring to the contact levers 48 of the sorting control mechanism 46 and by the other spring to the positive pole.
The operation of the sorting machine of FIG. 1 is as follows:
At determined time intervals, which are given by the impulses caused by the contact plate 40 in the circuit: positive blade, contact 41, magnet 42, negative pole, the transport magnet 42 passes plugs through the guide channel. of the machine, the lowest card of the stack of cards located in the tank 45. Between the card tank 45 and the sorting compartments 36, the feeler levers 44 feel the numerical value reproduced on the card by symbols perforated and print, by coupling the part of the feed mechanism 1 added to the combination values of the numerical value in question, by the toothed shaft 15 to this mechanism a movement over a determined angular distance.
For example, in the transmission of the digital value 5 by the electromagnets 6 and
8, the transmission wheels of sets 11 and 13 are coupled with the continuously rotating shaft 10. In the course of one rotation of the shaft 10, the toothed shaft 15 then first rotates by means of the set 11. one tooth division and then by means of set 13 of four divisions. tooth. The coupling of the shaft 10 with the one- and four-tooth toothed wheels of sets 11 and 13, coupling effected by electromagnets 6 to 8, is

disengaged after one revolution of the shaft 10.
The successive advancement of the shaft 15 by one tooth division and four tooth divisions takes place due to the fact that the toothed wheels of the sets 11 and 13, despite the simultaneous energization of their coupling magnets 6 and 8, come into action successively on the shaft 15 by virtue of the arrangement of their teeth on the circumference. The order of succession of the engagements of the toothed wheels of sets 11 to 14 is in reality such that in the event of excitation of all the coupling magnets 6 to 9, one tooth of set 11, then two teeth. of set 12, then the four teeth of set 13 and finally the eight teeth of set 14 come into action on the toothed shaft 15. If all the coupling magnets 6 to 9 are not energized, only the teeth games 11, 12, 13 or 14, coupled with the shaft 10, come into action on the toothed shaft 15.
It does not matter that the various clearances 11 to 14 coupled with the shaft 10 come into action on the shaft 15 in an immediate successive manner or with intermediate pauses.
From the shaft 15 this movement is transmitted to the toothed wheel 22 by the intermediate control mechanism coupled to this shaft. The toothed wheel 22, the pawl 32 of which is separated by the stop 53 from the teeth of the wheel 29, is controlled in advance of the toothed wheel 29 by an amount corresponding to the numerical value felt on the perforated sheet, because the shaft 10 rotates faster than shaft 21. After completion of this forward movement, wheel 22 is again driven by continuously rotating toothed wheel 29 by means of the pawl 32 in the meantime engaged in the toothing of the wheel 29.
The coupling of the toothed wheel 17 with the shaft 15 by the coupling sleeve 16 has previously been caused in the circuit: positive pole, contact 33, winding 20, negative pole, by the rotating contact plate 31 keep on going. After taking the path corresponding to the rest of a tour of the

toothed wheel 22, contact 26 is closed.
The sorting control mechanism assigned to the corresponding intermediate control mechanisms is brought on, during the duration of the rest of the rotational movement of the toothed wheel
22 carried out after advancing the toothed wheel 22 with the toothed wheel 29 or the shaft 22 until the contact 26 closes, in the position in which the contact arm 34 of the control mechanism in question is on the contact connected to the actuating magnet of the compartment or sorting box in question.
Consequently, upon closing of the contact 26, the circuit passing from the positive pole, through the contact 6, the contact arm 34 and the contact touched at this moment by this arm, the magnet winding 37 of the sorting 36 corresponding to the probed numerical value, at the negative pole, is closed, m The working magnet 37 of the sorting compartment 36 in question attracts its armature and opens the closing valve 39 of the compartment 36, The control processes described take such a long time that the cards can, during this time, slide from the point where the numerical value is palpated by the feeler levers 44 until in front of the sorting compartment 36 in question and, after opening of the organ closure of this compartment 36, in this compartment.
The path of the card from one compartment 36 to the other then corresponds in time to a unit of the digital value, or to a movement of the intermediate control mechanism corresponding to this value. The transport of the plugs is preferably adjusted so that between two plugs conducted successively in the guide track, there remains an interval of two widths of the sorting compartment. The selection of the sorting compartment in question can be made from each sorting compartment. Several sorting mechanisms can operate simultaneously with their intermediate control mechanisms.
In the execution example shown at

twelve sorting compartments, five sorting control mechanisms 35 would suffice, under certain conditions, in combination with the order of succession of cards indicated, to assure an orderly operation of the machine. In the example shown, the first sorting compartment 'from the right is assigned to the value -1, the second to the value 2, and so on.
In the embodiment of FIG. 2, the operation is in principle the same as that of the device of FIG. 1. But together with the energization of the coupling magnet 20 the sorting control magnet 50, coupled in parallel to this magnet 20, is energized and advances the contact arms 47 and 48 'of. a recovery, so that the contact arm 47 is placed on the contact segment 49, and prepares the circuit: negative pole, 50, 49, 47, 51, positive pole, circuit in which the sorting control magnet 50 is, after its first excitation, excited after each closing of contact 51 by plate 40, in the circuit: positive pole, 33, 50, negative pole.
In the circuit of each coupling magnet 20 (, 33, 54, 20, -) is interposed a contact 54 which, immediately after the first current pulse caused by the contact 33, is opened in dependence on the contact arm 47. As a result, it is avoided that in the repeated advancement of the contact arm 47 on the segment 49, the coupling magnet mounted in parallel to the winding 50, is energized jointly. The advance control of toothed wheel 22 is effected between the first and the second excitation pulses for the magnet 50. Each time the magnet 50 is energized, the contact arms 47 and 48 move forward one time.
In this way, the contact arm 48 goes to the position in which it prepares the positive pole circuit, P6, 48,

37, negative pole, for the sorting compartment 36 corresponding to the probed numerical value. This circuit is only closed at the moment when the contact 26 is closed by the projection 25 of the plate 24. The energization of the magnet 37 thus caused results in the opening of the sorting compartment 36 in question. The sorting control mechanism 46 then advances until the contact arm 47 drops from the contact bar 49 and thus opens the retaining circuit: negative pole, 50,49, 47, 51, positive pole, for the magnet 50 of the sorting control mechanism 46.
The various sorting control mechanisms 46 are put into operation in order of succession by the plates 31 arranged on the shaft 21 with their cams offset, in combination with the energization of the assistant coupling magnet 20 and advance. repeatedly independently of each other.
