<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Eight gears are therefore used for the forward run.
The present invention relates to a gear arrangement making it possible to effect a change of speed giving the four forward speeds with only three pairs of gears.
To this end, the transmission gears, unlike what has been done up to now, not only serve as relays, but are used in such a way that they themselves contribute to the reduction of speed. As a result, there are no longer any transmission wheels proper.
The transmission wheel is mounted madly on the secondary shaft, instead of being one with it, and a. gear of each of the other couples is also mounted mad on its shaft; these different gears can alternately be made integral with their shaft by means of suitable devices. Annex
The drawing / shown by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention, making it possible to obtain for forward travel four speeds with three pairs of gears.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of this device.
Fig. 2 is a diagram showing the various combinations obtained under these conditions.
Figure 3 shows the combinations that can be obtained with an additional gear train,
In the form of execution shown on
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figure 1, 1 designates the shaft connected to the motor and 2 the receiver shaft placed as an extension of the previous one, An intermediate shaft 3 is placed between the motor shaft and the receiver shaft, and centered on them by means of cylindrical extensions 4 'and 5 fitted with gentle friction in a bore of shafts 1 and 2.
Shafts 1 and 2: are mounted, by means of ball bearings 6 and 7, in a housing 8.
Intermediate shaft 3 rotates on shafts 1 and 2 by means of ball bearings 9 and 10.
The pinion 11 of the motor shaft carries an extension 12 at the end of which are formed cells 13 in which fingers 14 mounted on a sleeve 16 engage. By moving this sleeve, one obtains the pinion clutch with the wheel 15, which is integral with the intermediate shaft 3.
This wheel carries at its end splines 17 making it possible to ensure its connection with the sensor shaft 2 by means of the. sleeve 18, which, by sliding on the splines 19 of the receiver shaft) engages in the splines 17.
The wheel 20, mounted loose on the receiving shaft is provided with holes 21 in which the fingers 22 of the sleeve 18 can engage in order to secure the wheel 20 with the receiving shaft 2.
The wheel 20 meshes with the pinion 23, which is permanently attached to the secondary shaft 24. This shaft rests on the housing 8 by ball bearings 25 and 26.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The pinion 27 is also permanently fixed on the secondary shaft, it carries holes in which the fingers 28 of the sleeve 29 are engaged, thus making it possible to tension the wheel 30, idle on the secondary shaft 24, integral with this tree. These fingers are placed, for this purpose, in the cells 31 made on the hub of the wheel.
It should be noted that each of the fingers 14 and 28 has a notch 33 allowing free passage in the "stop" position of the nipples formed between the cells; this arrangement allows the fingers to engage with the kind in both directions of movement of their sleeves.
In the example shown, with the gears still engaged, all forms of toothing can be used: straight, helical, herringbone, etc.
In fig. 2, the vertical lines a, b, c represent schematically, in their respective positions. the three pairs of gears used to make the combinations for the front frame; the vertical lines d relate to reverse gear.
The horizontal line e1 represents the intermediate axis which carries the reverse gear d, a gear which is not shown in FIG. 1.
The horizontal lines e and f diagrammatically represent, in their respective position, the shafts of the mechanism.
A, B, C, D, E schematically indicates the connections of the various gears with their shafts corresponding to the four forward speeds and to reverse. to engage one or the other of the

27 to the secondary shaft, then to the receiving shaft by the engfenages 23 and 20 following line 0 of figure 2.
To take the 1st gear D, the sleeves 18 'and 29 are pushed to the right, which causes, on the one hand, the fingers 28 to penetrate the cells 31, making the chain 30 integral with the secondary shaft 24 and, diantre part, the fingers 22 in the holes 21, joining the wheel 20 with the receiving shaft 2; the motor shaft thus communicates the motor movement via the gears 11 and 30 to the secondary shaft, and the latter in turn transmits it to the receiver shaft via the gears 23X and 20 along line D in figure 2.
To take reverse gear @, the sleeve 29 is pushed to the right to engage the fingers 28 in the cells 31 and by continuing to move the sleeve 29 to the right, the gears 33 and 32 also engage an intermediate gear. , not shown in the drawing * The motor shaft thus communicates its movement via the gears 11 and 30 to the secondary shaft then to the receiver shaft via the gear 23, the intermediate gear and the gear 32 according to line E of the diagram in figure 2.
,
The maneuvering of the sleeves and the intermediate wheel can be accomplished, as usual, by means of forks actuated by a lever, but of course any other means could be employed to achieve the same result.
In FIG. 3, the vertical lines a, b, c, d represent four pairs of gears making it possible to make the combinations' of the forward gear. The engre-

The horizontal lines e and f represent the upper and lower tree lines; 4
A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H show the connections of the various gears with their shafts, corresponding to the forward speeds, which are eight in number in the case considered.
By comparing Figs. 2, and 3, it is realized that the number of combinations increases rapidly with the number of gear trains used and that it is thus possible to achieve a gear change having a large number of speeds for a small number of gears. gears.
