n APPAREIL EXTINCTEUR "
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

n FIRE EXTINGUISHER "
The present invention relates to a fire-extinguisher apparatus which can be applied to containers of shapes and sizes. conches, presenting the particularity! that ignited objects located there or thrown into it, go out automatically by deprivation of oxygen and without spilling smoke.
All smokers know the unpleasant sensation produced by a cigar or a cigarette which is consumed on the edge of an ashtray and causing, by the smoke which emanates from it on everyone present, a painful and often prolonged cough.
The present invention overcomes in particular this great drawback by imagining a cover of any material for an ashtray, and the constituent elements of which are arranged so as to cause the automatic extinction of the lit cigars and cigarettes introduced into the ashtray. More generally, if we have inside a silo or a chamber closed on all its faces a similar device, forming the object of the present invention, or a series of devices
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
superimposed or juxtaposed, we will thus be able to extinguish by suffocation any source or beginning of fire which could break out inside this chamber by the formation of a stagnant layer of carbonic acid.
The apparatus, according to its first embodiment, comprises an offset funnel or not, and one or more openings arranged on the periphery of the lid of the container or of the closed chamber.
Igniting objects located there or thrown through these holes sliding along the wall of the funnel and falling to the bottom are extinguished by the following process: the flow of fresh air entering through the funnel prevents fumes, forming inside the receptacle or the closed chamber to leave them, by the fact that an interior atmosphere is created deprived of oxygen and supersaturated with carbonic acid, heavier than the 'air and therefore remaining at the bottom.
If one envisages the construction of an apparatus of larger dimensions one can provide several orifices on the circumference of the outer part of the apparatus and in this case the funnel hole may become central as long as the distance of the new orifices from this central hole allows the establishment of deflecting walls: the meeting of the flow of fresh air and that of gases and fumes tending to exit from the receptacle on which the appliance is placed! object of the present invention, will then create the atmosphere unsuitable for any combustion.
In this case, the space between the cover and the funnel must also be divided into sectors whose partitions: ;;: 'stop a little before the edges of the central hole of the funnel, so that that the principle of deflection, by the meeting of the currents of air and gases, must be respected.
Other features of the present invention will emerge in detail below, with reference to the figures of the accompanying drawings, which is purely by way of example.

indicative and nonlimiting two embodiments of the invention.
In these drawings, showing an ashtray, including a cover based on the principle of the extinguisher apparatus forming the object of the present invention, fig.l shows a plan view of the cover according to the first embodiment of the present invention; Fig.2 is a diametral section of the cover according to the first embodiment of the present invention; Fig.3 is a plan view of the cover according to the second embodiment of the present invention, particularly advantageous for large dimensions; @ fig. 4 is a diametrical section of a fire extinguisher according to the second embodiment of the present invention, particularly advantageous for large dimensions.
Referring to Figure 1, 1 shows the cover of any material, generally spherical in shape, in which are formed the recesses 2, which can be grooved transversely or provided with grids or any other arrangement having the aim of prevent continuous contact of the deposited cigarette with the ashtray.
Towards the outer edge, at one of the ends of one of the diameters and in the hollow part of one of these indentations mentioned above, one or more openings 3 of a diameter sufficient to introduce a cigar are made: this opening is extended by a slit 4 with converging edges, joining towards the center of the cover and allowing by its shape (plan view in the form of a racket), to detach fa, - flickering the ignited part of the cigar or the cigarette , before throwing it in the ashtray.
Referring to Figure 2, 1 shows the cover in generally spherical shape, in which are formed recesses 2 in the direction of two or more diameters. ,, provided with any device to prevent contact with

continuous tact of the cigar / burning head with the ashtray:
3 represents the opening of special shape, through which one introduces the cigar or the lit cigarette into the ashtray Between this cover and the body of the ashtray itself is fixed, by any means, a funnel 4, the orifice of which is offset by in relation to the center of the ashtray cover, this orifice being of sufficient diameter to allow a cylinder, even an entire one, to pass easily without remaining hooked, while not exceeding a certain maximum, since it is in the interest of that the diameter of this orifice is as small as possible, as will emerge from the. description to follow. The taper of this funnel is such that it forms a circular deflector with respect to the walls of the ashtray.
Referring to Figure 3, 1 shows the cover qu.i is rather intended for vases, chambers or containers of large dimensions. In this cover, which is of any material, there are recesses 2, which can be arranged in any way and in any number of diameters around a central hole 4. These recesses 2 serve to deposit the cigarettes and are fitted with some device to prevent contact between the burning cigarette and the ashtray. The shape of the recesses 2 facilitates the sliding of the ashes and cigarettes which it is desired to put into the ashtray.
5 shows a conical body located on the central hole 10 of the ashtray.
Referring to Figure 4, 1 shows the cover, rather intended for vases, chambers or large containers in which are made recesses 2 and a central opening 10 which serves for the introduction of ashes, cigars and cigarettes in the ashtray. Between the ashtray and the cover is fixed by any means a body 7, on the periphery of which is fixed another body 8 in the form of a half-torus which may have for example branches.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
9 which rise upwards, joining in the center of the ashtray to form the conical body 5. This conical body 5 can also rest on the bottom of the container or form part of it.
Here is in essence the operation of the extinguisher apparatus: If we introduce through one of the apertures of the apparatus a lit object, this object will slide on the inclined interior wall of the funnel (according to the first embodiment). ) and will fall. in the bottom of the container or the closed chamber towards one of the walls. The smoke, sheltered from drafts, will rise appreciably vertically, will meet the wall of the funnel, will follow it while cooling and increasing speed to move towards the hole of the funnel. .
It will initiate in such a way a centripedal vortex movement towards the bottom of the receptacle, a vortex movement which will be accentuated as a result of the meeting of the current of cold air of different density, called up by the orifice of the funnel by the burning even of the flaming object. This cold air stream will collide with the combustion products there, preventing them from escaping from the container. If, exceptionally, fumes should be introduced between the container cover and the funnel, the cover by its. spherical shape would act in the same way as the funnel in the lower part of the container, ie the smoke will meet the current of cold air which will prevent it from spreading into the atmosphere.
The gases charged with carbonic acid, heavier than air, coming from combustion, accumulate at the bottom of the ashtray, silo, any container or a chamber closed on all its faces, and thus create at. the interior of these an atmosphere unsuitable for any combustion, so that after a certain time the objects in ignition are found inside the container, closed chamber, etc. or thrown out through the orifice extinguish practically ...
